The Alliance is kind of shady, but I trust them far more than TIM.
Maybe we can tell Anderson that the Alliance can make a copy of the Normandy's IFF and go get what's left of the base like the Shadow Broker was going to do?

Even Harbinger would pause and look.
Yay Ash<3
If Harbinger were to assume direct control of Shepard at this point, he would be completely confused and unprepared because unlike the Collectors he normally assumes control over, Shep in the above scene would be pitching a tent and Harbinger would have to spend time figuring out why part of his body was pressing against his armor.
After figuring it out, our favorite Reaper would probably be like, you know what on second thought, instead of wiping out the organics maybe I'll take a vaction first, assume control of Shep and use him to tap that *ss a whole bunch of times. Kind of like "Meet Joe Black" except Reaper-style.

I've kept the Collector base in two playthroughs for this exact reason.. I hate that if you keep the base you're automatically forced to remain on good terms with TIM. I really wish there was an option to keep it, and tell TIM where to shove it. I think in this case, Ash would understand why Shep kept the base because of the need to know what their up against, and Shep wouldn't be working with the enemy anymore.... Win/Win right? (Though i'm not too thrilled with the Alliance now either) But noooo..... it seems destroying it is the only way to cut ties with Cerberus, which makes me wonder.... If you keep the base and stay with Cerberus, will the "consequences" of that be that you cut ties with Ash as well, for good but gain an advantage against the reapers in ME3? And if you destroy it and leave Cerberus, do you end up throwing away a chance to gain a better understanding of the enemy, but get another chance with Ashley? I just don't know.... It will be interesting to see how that plays out..
I couldn't agree more Milla. In "reality", the way I would have played the whole collector base would have been to first, cut the transmission to the Illusive Man right away so he doesn't know if you destroyed the base or not; second, wipe out the Collectors with that pulse and leave the base intact; 3) the SECOND you get back to the ship call up Counselor Anderson / the Alliance and report that you captured a Reaper base and if you want to get it before Cerberus does get your hiney to the Omega-4 relay stat. Then meet Alliance ships on the known-space side of the O-4 relay and escort them through. Bam, you get all the technology from the Collector base but under Alliance/Citadel control and score lots of Alliance points.
However, having your cake and eating it too makes for much a less dramatic storyline so I don't blame Bioware for posing it the way they did, you have to admit there would be a lot less discussion on the forums about the potential consequences of the collector base decision if one option was to turn the base over to the good guys.

Realistic-Me thinks that it won't affect relationship with Ash regarding ME3, maybe it would be mentioned in a conversation but that's about it. As for advantage over the Reapers, I don't know, it will be stupid to make a big desicion like that without major consequences to the playthrough. We saw in ME2 that the big choices you had to make in ME1 had cosmetic effect only, and I hope for a different experience in the third game.
I really hope to see how the important desicions you made through the first two games carry massive weight in all aspects of the game - squadmates, romance, missions that you can/can't do, and the solution to how to defeat the Reapers. ME2 was really dissapointing in that aspect so I don't expect for much, but I would be pleasantly surprised if it happens.

I don't know. After all, the collector ship has Reaper technology in it. The Reapers are far more advanced than any other species, doing their things for milleniums. Every attempt in the game history to research Reaper Technology led to insane indoctrinated people. It's a difficult choise, but I think it might be too dangerous to leave the ship intact, when you have a chance to destroy it.

You may be right. We have yet to see any real consequences when it comes to the bigger decisions in ME. I'm also hoping that we do get these dire consequences I keep hearing about. I'd like to see the decisions i've made in the game have massive effect on the story in ME3 (so to speak).
@Rdubs.... as for your "pitching a tent" comment about Harbinger.. I just.. lol! I can hear it now...
Harbinger: "Assuming direct control." *looks at Ash, looks down at self* "You will feel this."

It's funny, even though my canon!Shep had been operating on a "What would Ash do," philosophy for a lot of ME2, he didn't stop to think what she'dve done with the Collector base. His gut reaction when TIM was like "Can we keep it?!" was "Are you serious? A dead Reaper ship turned your entire science team into husks and you want to keep this thing? NO." In retrospect, I think Ash would have approved of his reasoning, but I can also see her understanding the possible tactical advantage of keeping the stupid thing.
Every military and scientific fiber in my body was pulling to keep the base. I think I read something that said the weapons on the SR2 (or the upgrades) were based on tech from the Sovereign wreckage. Thought I read that EDI was based on that tech too. You can imagine that without that Sovereign tech in the main cannons, the battle with the Collector ship would not have turned out so well. It's been mentioned before that when advanced tech is introduced into a civilization not ready for it the outcome is never good, but to turn it down means the reaper fleet shows up and you're throwing rocks at them (on a relative basis).
In the end in both of my playthroughs so far I've blown the base, for two reasons. First, I doubt Bioware will craft ME3 such that if you don't keep the base, you can't beat the Reapers. Someone on another forum speculated that blowing the base may just force you to do an additional storyline mission to get the piece of missing tech or whatever that you would have had if you kept the base. I doubt they'll wipe out organic civilization in ME3 if you don't keep the base. The other reaon, and to be honest the bigger concern in my book, was that blowing it seemed to be a decision that may increase the chances of getting back together with Ash. Sorry civilization, you're a secondary concern LOL.
Also my experience has been the game rarely bites you in the *ss for making Paragon decisions, normally they come up with a creative way to make the outcome you want work even if you go Paragon. So I'm betting what Milla noted, very accurately, may turn out to be the case ("We have yet to see any real consequences when it comes to the bigger decisions in ME.") Niravital mentioned this point as well - very perceptive. So far the bigger decisions have just been modified dialogue or additional one-liners, we'll see if that changes in ME3. Remember the reality too folks - Bioware is a for-profit company and their goal is to produce a game which will achieve the highest sales at the lowest cost, and there is additional cost involved in coming up with 1,000,000 different story paths and dialogue lines. So economically, as long as it doesn't impact your decision to buy the game or not, they have an incentive to try and make as much of the story as common as possible. But like I said who knows, maybe they will be more strategic-focused on ME3 and be willing to spend extra money on massive plot diversions just to have a "loss leader" that is talked about for years as one of the best games ever made, which would surely increase the sales of their future games. Only time will tell.

I also want any unfinished business to be decided in a mission, and not to get a mail about it.
Bioware has created such high expectations that they better deliver

Milla - building on that, another line from our favorite Reaper:
Harbinger: *goes to mount Ashley* "THIS HURTS YOU." *short delay* "Hang on a second...maybe no it doesn't....Holy Sh*t!!!"

Yep, every video game company's goal is to make money. BUT, I really think that Bioware stands out in the crowd and is known to develop excellent games, not just for the sake of making more money (as in sports games). I often hear Bioware people using the "we only do it if it's good" moto. ME1 and ME2 are really different games gameplay-wise. In my opinion, they did excellent job with it, although they had to write a lot of the code from scratch and spend a lot of time and money. It seems that Bioware really care about the gamers' experience and improve themselves to reach the taste of their clients. So I believe that they plan to set a new bar for video games. But of course, not everything is possible, and they do want to profit.
