I finally conviced my friend to play Mass Effect and he completed it recently. I was talking about the game with him, and when we got to the subject of Ashley he had the usual brash opinon and calls her rasist. He says that the alliance is representative of earth and people like her and Navigator Pressley shouldn't be in it. So we spent a while debating it.
I countered with the obvious she's not rasist, she's just wary and nervous. He wasn't convinced.
I said that, as Shepard states, they are deeply held beliefs. We don't always get a choice in our core beliefs, that mostly they are deeply buried. We cannot choose to change our beliefs simply by saying we do. We can choose to try and accept others and act with coureousy even if deep down we are wary.
He is a born again christian and has strong beliefs, he says that god has spoken to him. I'm not a christain at all, so I used an example to expalin my point.
I don't believe in god, and he says unless I accept god into my heart I will go to hell. But I cannot just believe it god simply by saying I do. I'm too scientific and logical and it prevents me from beileving. I would love to belive there was a god, and that death is not the end, but wanting to believe doesn't make the belief real. I can't simply choose to believe. I can choose to go church, read the bible and try to learn, but to truly believe in god I must be convinced on a deep level. It is not an change that can be made easily.
This is the same with Ashley. She has strong mistrust and beliefs when it come to aliens, but it isn't a view that is done out of an evil heart. What should be judged is her actions, she chooses to do her best to co operate with aliens and she only expresses her view with her commander, she isn't going around the ship trying to spread hate. Her beiefs and trust issues may be solved with time, but she shouldn't be judged as evil for a view that she can't help having.
He disagreed citing something religous to do with opening your heart and I got a bit lost.
What do you guys think? Are people able to choose what they want to believe or are they imprinted and changed by upbrining at experiances.
