So it's means nothing ? So why put theses words.... From a writing standpoint, it is unnecessary to break a sentence in full of emotion  in a love scene if it means nothing...

 " Ashley might well have continued her sentence without the "I almost...."

So it's a subtle message that we tried to get across, not necessarily the suicide, I agree.

Or then the author has mismanaged .... but it is too easy to think that.

For example: "I almost became involved with another guy."

I think it's fair to say that Ash had a hard time mourning Shep though she probably didn't show those emotions in her daily life around other people... In the moment at horizon when she says "I almost" My own interpretation of that is this... "I almost didn't make it".... Not in the sense that she almost didn't make it and was contemplating suicide... More along the lines of, I almost didn't make it through the heartache I felt when you died because I was in love with you... I don't think it was a throwaway line and my interpretation is what makes sense for me anyway..

I also cant see her shooting herself and dying but I dont think its because she has some big secret mission that she has to accomplish. Most people didnt expect the Reapers were still out there, the Alliance didnt believe shep and though it was over.

They sent Ash to investigate CERB involvment on Horizon NOT some new threat. I think the only reason she didnt off herself was due to her religion.

I think what she meant when she said that was to close herself off from everybody to close herself emotionally. Not loving anyone ever again goes against alot of fanfic Ashleys but I personally think thats what she meant.

Then again the ash I know doesnt really go out and has one night stands like some fanfics.

Also during that ash reunion they should have added a renegade option.....that guy got close to the breaking point of respect to Ash that my shep wouldnt have stood for.....

I kind of figure she might have gotten involved with another guy at some point, maybe after she put Shepard behind her.  She said she hadn't let herself think of those memories in a year.  Maybe a year ago she decided she needed to get on with her life and stop loving a ghost.  I don't think it's that.

I really think it's partially a stammer, partially a moment that she was about to be really honest about she felt but then thought better of it and swallowed it.  I could have been "I almost fell apart completely" but she realized she needed to keep her cool what with all the weirdness and the people staring as well.

There were so many emotions running through her - conveyed perfectly by Kimberly Brooks who adds so much to the script that isn't even there.

@haynoats But they did have a longstanding relationship.  A deep friendship that was more.  They cared about each other and even said as much.  Yes, the physical intimacy was that one night (or several after even - we don't know what happened in that time between ME1 and 2).  Deep and meaningful does not necessarily have to be "long term."

She is serious ... vulnerable and confused face to Shepard she believes died and she she found actually  alive. I do not believe at all that it could be mean anything ... ( like i almost makes love with joker. )

Great insights Milla and Badpie, although I like your theories here's another one to consider. I wonder if Ash was about to say, " I almost changed who I am" by quiting the Alliance and possibly joining Cerberus or something. I think Ash would want Shepard's death to mean something, she wouldn't know what to do and be feeling helpless, she turns to Anderson he's doesn't have the answers, Garrus is off shooting up Omega, Liara went crazy, Ash knows she has to do something but what that's the thing. And Cerberus seems to be the only people doing anything about it, but you might ask, why would she then react so negatively to finding Shep with Cerberus? If this was something she seriously thought about and then decided, no she couldn't do it, only to find out that Shep of all people is in fact with Cerberus.

Honestly, I believe Horizon, was just bad writing by Bioware. And I agree that Kimberly Brooks did much with the little she was given in the script. As for the pause.... I cannot believe Ash would even entertain thoughts of suicide.
It's totally out of character. Her faith, her family, her desire to clear her family name in the Alliance. The fanfiction linked in this thread is better in my opinion then what we got at Horizon.... Hoping for better in ME3.
