I'm just concerned with Bioware being true to the great writing so far in the main story. If the VS being a Spectre is explained and makes sense, then I'm good with it. I love this story and I love the Shepard/Ash relationship. Just want the awesomeness to conclude satisfactorily.Posted Image

But I disagree with you about Ash being attracted to Shepard because of what he is.  They really are equals, on the same field which is why they work well I think.  To say that she wouldn't be attracted to him if he wasn't senior to her in some way is kind of insulting to the content of her character I think.  She has a great respect for the man, not his title - and likewise he has a great respect for the woman and not her rank or title.  Shepard is not "unattainably awesome."  If he were he wouldn't' be at all interesting.  Part of what makes him amazing is that he's just another person like anyone else, thrust into the lead on some pretty heavy sh*t that he handles with the help of some really great team members.

Whoa, ease up peeps.  I didn't mean to say Ash only likes Shepard because he is her senior.  He has awesome character and to Badpie's point the situations he was in let uncommon results be achieved, which makes him respected.  I'm just theorizing that Shepard's accomplishments factor in, even in a small way, to Ashley's attraction to Shepard because of the respect he has.  First human Spectre, savior of the Citadel, Star of Terra...what was it that Ash referred to him as on Horizon?  I believe having those accomplishments and that respect due him is attractive to Ashley and I think to say she'd be as attracted to him just the same as if he had that winning personality but a career path as boring as Navigator Pressley or Engineer Adams...attraction like that may be textbook ideal, but in my experience people are more attracted to someone highly respected than an equal person who isn't.

Now, if the forum consensus is that our girl would be equally attracted to Shepard even without all of his accomplishments, then I totally stand corrected.

You're digging yourself deeper here ;)

His career probably factors a lot towards who he is. Would he really be the bad ass we know today if he had been fixing engines or pinpointing landing zones instead of fighting off Thresher Maws or killing Batarians?

Also, I hear she's a bit of a fan of Shepard if he won the Star of Terra. I wouldn't know, my sheps are either a Sole Survivour or Ruthless.

I don't really think Ash is that shallow to be honest. Sure she wouldn't be with some dimwit, but that would be because that person is a dimwit and not because everyone but her thinks he is. Ash no doubt has respect for all he's accomplished but she's not a hero worshipper. Nor is she the type to suddenly lose interest if she were to surpass him on some career path.

Ash is 100% not the romance to choose if you want some fawning Shepard fangirl with stars in her eyes.  She simply doesn't have that.

And now a word from our sponsors:

You're hard to follow, you say I'm digging myself deeper then go on to mention things which more support my point than not.

Badpie - again I find myself agreeing with you so I think our disagreement is one of some incorrectly interpreting an absolute where none was intended.  I never said, nor thought, that Ash is a hero worshipper.  But is the situation really that either Shepard's accomplishments have zero bearing on her attraction to him, either that or she's a hero worshipper?  I believe Shepard's accomplishments are attractive in SOME way to her, maybe it's really minor (now that I think about it, really it more applies to when they first met than after they got to know each other).  If you're saying his accomplishments don't factor in at all to her being attracted to him, then I respect that too.

In retrospect my point is kind of moot because Shepard isn't at risk of being seen as resting on his laurels, as in ME3 he will run around the galaxy uniting races against the Reapers, which no one else could do as well, which is a lot better than any status / position.

EDIT:

Couldn't agree more, and I think that strong-willed independence is one of the things Shepard finds attractive about her.

Apparently I am O_o I meant that some of the more... passionate posters might see that as more unintended slandering. As for the supporting part, I meant to agree with both sides. Ashley falls for Shepard for who he is, yet who he is is largely because of his career.

You know what? I'll just go draw up some fan art. Pictures are worth a thousand words anyway.

Antivenger you rock, that sentence of yours makes total sense and is actually a fairly artful way of putting the thought.  Proses like that just seem to carry a class or style all of their own, how they fold back on themselves.  Kind of reminds me of the book "The Once and Future King" (about King Arthur), how two connected thoughts are arranged in the same sentence.

Not sure why I'm talking about this, I'll go back to shutting up pending Badpie's reply.

I agree with what's in bold.  ;)  But that's very different from saying Ash digs him because of the things that made him him.  There's like a degree of separation there.  Let me see...:

Shepards life and career has made him the man he is.

The man he is is what Ash respects and admires and loves.

Ash loves the man.

I get what you're saying now.  It's just that degree of separation that was confusing.  Saying:

Ash loves the life and career that made the man

is different from

Ash loves Shepard.

(I think this applies to the friendship too).

Sorry Rdubs, not trying to gang up, just giving what I thought was a differing view.

Pressley or Adams aren't soldiers per se. Yes they are, but not infrantry soldiers like Shep and Ash. Here again is something they share in common. Had you said someone like Jacob, then I could see a commonality that could be the basis for attraction between the two.

Ash asks Shepherd if he is still willing to invest in a relationship given the "baggage" she carries. One of his greeting card answers is, that "you just have to find a matching set." She is asking him to overlook the stigma attached to her family name and lack of sterling military assignments. If she can seek this from him, I can't see her not willing to make the same allowance for him if the situation were reversed.

So to answer your last statement, yes she could provided he is still an infrantry soldier with the same personality/character traits. I just don't see achievements being a big basis for her deciding whether or not to get involved with someone. She comes off as shallow otherwise imo. But I'm open to other people's thoughts as well.

Thanks for dropping by!  Yes, it is nice to see some love for our favorite finally being more contagious than the hate for her(something I will never understand)
And about what you guys were talking about, I think that whoever Shepard and Ashley were and what happened before they met all contributed to what they have now, so yeah...

I think we agree more than disagree.

But food for thought:
Isn't it also true that Shep's career/success is what it is largely because of who he is?

I admit....I took Liara and Ash on the final mission a) because I love Ash and Liara's dynamic, B) I'm a fan of Liara and I write fanfic with her and Shepard's closeness in mind and c) I thoroughly enjoy Ash being the one to double tap Saren - and Liara is just not ballsy enough for that so it's guaranteed Ash will be the one to do it.

classic nature vs. nurture question. I don't think anyone has any concrete answer to that.

I like the respect that Wrex has for Ash. Their elevator conversation comes to mind, though I can't recall the exact wording. They respect each other as warriors, which I always thought made them an even better team. And even though my Shepard was able to talk Wrex down on Virmire with no problem, in my head Ash was always nearby with her weapon aimed. And Wrex knew it.

...And they totally joked about it later and he did one of those laughing smacks on her back that was meant as friendly but knocked the wind out of her because she was so much smaller than a krogan.

......There's apparently a lot of story in my head. I apologize for my head canon.

I just remembered; I once read a humor fan fic back in the days when the Mass Effect fan fics on FF.net numbered less than two hundred where it was revealed that Ashley and Wrex hooked up.

And since the only double bed is in Shepard's quarters..

Posted Image Yep.  It goes back to the question - are heroes born, made, or both?  No real answer to that though it has been argued much in mankind's history.

Freddie: What do you mean?
Fritz: you know what I asked
Fred:No I dont fritz now explain
Wrex slowely walking by
Fritz; Well your so quiet and you dont seem to really go out during leave so I was wondering if you know you liked girls
Fredie: What no!
Fritz begins teasing her
Wrex walks behind her and gives him the cold stare  then walks off
