Just a quick point I've been meaning to mention: Shepard is an officer in the Alliance Navy, but Ash is basically an enlisted person in the (Alliance) Marines. The N7 group is a subset of the Alliance Navy not the Marines, i.e., Shepard is the Mass Effect universe equivalent of a Navy SEAL officer. Sometimes you hear people talk about Shepard like he's a Marine, but he's Navy (Spec Ops, but still Navy). I think one of Badpie's writings has Ash being commissioned to an officer in the Marines, which would be cool to have happen in the game. But in real life a lot of (especially senior) enlisted folk really enjoy being enlisted and have no desire to become an officer and deal with a lot of the crap officers have to deal with.

A good point that I think a lot of people miss.

Shepard is Navy and N7 is sort of like the SEALS.  Ashley is a Marine which is like, well, the Marines.

So, in ME1, how did you guys distribute Ashley's skill points in weapons training? I never saw her as much of a shotgun user (although she's quite good for that since she has high health), so I ramped up her Assault Rifle skill first, as I saw that as her main weapon. Afterwards, I ramped up her Sniper rifle skill. Mainly so I could take her and Garrus together and have a headshot party.

I just read this as well.

*finally breaths a sigh of relief*

I really was worried she's just be temporary. So that's two good bits of ME news in the same week. So happy about the delay.

I think what's interesting about that is that they were still talking about theses exact things even 4 years after the game first came out, so she's obviously the type of character to stick with people.

I only found Mass Effect last year, so I'm wondering if the whole "THAT'S RACIST!" talk has been going on ever since the game originally came out- I'm guessing yes.   Pretty crazy.

So Ashley's a full time squad member eh?
Well I wasn't actually worried but it's nice to finally have that confirmed. Also hey, Garrus is back too. Nice to see the ol' 'alien sidekick' return. Seriously that dude is like Spock to Shepard's Kirk.
/nerd

Anyway so yes, it's great to have confirmation in that regard. It's been a long road frought with frustatration and loneliness but at the end of it is salvation and I'm glad I stuck with my original and best choice.

This is one choice that I stand by completely with no regrets.

That's kind of good news. I wasn't holding out a lot of hope for Garrus returning, but I'm glad he'll have a chnace to redeem himself after CALIBRATIONSSS1!!!!!11 over and over again in ME2.

Great news. Ash is one of my favorite characters. Probably top three with Garrus and Miranda. Glad to see she is back :).

Just thinking, I'm not one to give much credence to the whole "Haters gonna H8TE!!!" meme, but it may kinda sorta maybe apply with Ashley here a little bit. There's like three different threads on the character board about Racist Ash or why people hate Ashley, plus the talk about her ostensibly new appearance (which I love, btw) and Spectre status is still going on.

It's just kind of cool that she's being discussed so much. A lot of it is apparently negative, but you know what? She's getting a crapload of attention. She's a big deal, and on people's minds. In this case at least, I like that.

WOW!! SHE"S GETTING DISCUSSED SO MUCH AND GETTING A CRAPLOAD OF ATTENTION!!! ---REALLY???
SHE'S A BIG DEAL, AND ON PEOPLE'S MINDS.............WOW!!!...........like we (the Ashley fans) needed to hear this!!!
That is SOOOOOOOOOOO COOL!!!!................the last time I looked there was a TALI SUPPORT THREAD, a GARRUS SUPPORT THREAD, etc. etc........AND THEY WERE ALL BEING DISCUSSED!!!!!!..............but Oh???????........is it all negative???.........hm......let me think???? Most quote>unquote>Ash haters were thrilled that Ash didn't have a major role in ME2. They were also hoping the Bioware would reduce her role in ME3, so they could rub that in our ( her fans) faces. Now they are getting on this thread and trying to ENLIGHTEN us. HELP THE POOR, MIXED UP, ASHLEY FANS to see the TRUTH about their beloved character. LIKE THEY CAN CHANGE OUR MINDS!!!!!Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

What did you guys think of my thread? Did it help any of you better understand the "opposition" as it were? Did any of you come away with a better sense of acceptance that, although you disagree with them, the "hate" against Ashley is so much the character but how she is presented?

Just looking for some feedback, the point of the thread wasn't to bash but to help you all understand.

accidental snip, sorry

Yup, you missed the point of the post.

Have you ever heard of Stoicism? Ancient Greek and then Roman philosophy that held up reason over emotion and said that the key to avoiding anger or hatred was in understanding the cause of those feelings.

The point of the thread was to help Ashley fans understand why others felt the way they did, to understand the rationale and the causes just as they understand the character and her flaws and behavior.

Disagreeing with the detractors is perfectly fine and I never said that it wasn't.

I also want to say that I created the thread to be about Ashley for two reasons. First, all the points I made are things I've felt at some point since I played ME1. I have, through similar processes as the Roman Stoics did, put my initial feelings behind me and am now prettty much apathetic toward her. This means that I am able to explain in detail my reactions to help Ashley fans understand.

Second, it was because Ashley had become the topic of discussion due to photographs/concept art released of her. Her character had been brought to the forefront by the GI article.

Thank you so much for helping us UNDERSTAND.Posted Image

All in all it would be an interesting encounter.

Like Ashley, Shepard is a Marine also.

The N7 designation just means he's also got a Special Operationsbackground. The N7s are just Spec Ops Marines, not a seperate branch of service.

Ashley is an infantryman, but not Spec Ops. Or at least she isn't as of ME1. I'm not sure about ME2.

Assuming the Alliance military is structured similar to current ones (at least the U.S.), then with respect, no.

1) Commander is a rank below Captain in the Navy.  The equivalent rank in the Marines is Lieutenant Colonel.  For Lieutenant Commander, the Marine equivalent rank is Major.  Assuming Captain Anderson was a Captain by rank as well as position, then this makes sense that Shepard, as his XO, would be the next lower rank.
2) Navy officers command ships, Marines do not.  Marines command platoons, companies, battalions, brigades, regiments, etc.
3) Admirals give orders to other Navy personnel.  Marine generals give orders to Marine unit commanders.  It was Admiral Hackett and such talking to Shepard, not a General.  Remember General Williams was a Marine, but Shepard is on the Admiral path.
4) The skill sets between Navy officers and Marine officers are very different, and a Marine officer could not serve in a "line" position on a ship.  Navy officers must be familiar with navigation, propulsion, engineering, communications, weapons and fleet operations.  Marine officers need to be familiar with ground unit tactics, logistics, things like that...missing are the skills anyone assigned to operate a ship / starship would need to know.  All Marines can do is ride around on ships...which is the genesis of the joke that Marine stands for "My @ss Rides In Navy Equipment".

Etc.  Again this assumes the Alliance is set up along the lines of how current militaries are structured.  I'm surprised Bioware didn't opt to mimic the Canadian military where all they have is the "Canadian Defense Force."

The way I see it, Ash was only doing her job.:)

Since joining this forum I can see where becoming an "enemy" would be pretty easy. People get really attached and possessive of the characters. Posted Image

For me, Ash was the only person on Virmire who had Shep's back in that moment. My nephew left her on Virmire because she killed Wrex. When I explained how she was the only one who stood watch as Shepard tried & failed to talk the krogan down he realized what a mistake he had made. He was mad that Wrex was dead and hadn't really thought that she had saved his Shep's life.

I don't know if there's an Alliance Army, while Navy and Marines are mixed up:
"The Alliance Navy is the branch of the Systems Alliance military responsible for naval operations. The Alliance Marines, the ground operations branch of the Alliance military, are a specialized branch of the Navy."

Shep was a marine, because:
"N7 is a vocational code in the Systems Alliance military. The "N" designates special forces and the "7" refers to the highest level of proficiency. It applies to marines who have graduated from an elite training program."

At start of ME1, Shep seems to be the "leader of ground forces ("marines")" onboard the Normandy. But then he became "captian by position", not by rank. So onboard he acts as naval officer ("captain"), during missions he act's as marine.
"The divide between naval personnel and ground forces ("marines") is small. Ground units are a specialized branch of the fleet, just as fighter squadrons are. This unity of command is imposed by the futility of fighting without control of orbit; without the navy, any army is pointless. The marines, as a matter of pride, maintain some of their traditional rank titles; for example, marines have Privates and Corporals instead of Servicemen.
In ascending order of responsibility, the ranks of the Alliance are:
ENLISTED
Serviceman 3rd class/Private 2nd class
Serviceman 2nd class/Private 1st class
Serviceman 1st class/Corporal
NCOs
Service Chief
Gunnery Chief (Ash, ME1)
Operations Chief
OFFICERS
2nd Lieutenant
1st Lieutenant
Staff Lieutenant
Lieutenant Commander (Shep, ME1)
Staff Commander
Captain/Major
Rear Admiral/General
Admiral
Fleet Admiral"

All quotes: mass effect wiki

Looks like an Admiral could command both, navy and marine. So getting orders by Hackett does not necessarily mean Shep is navy.

P.S. No, that's not offtopic. Not only "navy" also marines can become heros and save, a least one, galaxy. Go Ash!

With all due respect, you said "Disagreeing with the detractors is perfectly fine" Ok, I disagree. I haven't read your "Why I think people hate Ashley Williams thread" nor do I plan too. If you want feedback, get it from your own thread. The last time I looked, this was a "Ashley Williams Support thread". I support ASH. I don't need to understand why people don't.

Oh, and by the way, if you look on the "Squadmates for ME3 Super- poll', both Tali and Garrus are in my top five.

Edit: Sorry GuardianAngel470, I apologize. Hey, we can all disagree and still be friends right? That's the great thing about social networking, we are all different races, genders, political persuasion, nationality etc. but we still have something in common. In this case, Our love for Mass Effect.Posted Image
