We didn't much about abilities in ME3, or? But she's a soldier, they can't change that. Perhaps she gets an extra when she becomes Spectre?

As long as she kicks ass, I'm fine with anything.

Why do people think its best to change her views on aliens.

Her views on aliens are an acquired taste. She will be more accepting of aliens the more experiece she has with them.

Ash is awesome the way she is. "Changing" her is not accepting Ash for who she is and I hope she dumps Shepard if Shepard keeps on trying to change her.

Her views on aliens are naive and not an "acquired taste".
It's clear she has trust issues and that extends from her personal life to her global view.
If you call making her more trustful towards others, changing her then you can say the same for renegading her.
You either help her open up or you help her build a wall around herself.
As for saying that you hope she dumps someone for going another route than you did ,
well thats just bad taste....:innocent:

Ashley's Paragon/Renegade Romance = Hot<3

I don't know. I understand where she is coming from about aliens but I don't agree with her views, at all really. I also don't think someone's opinion on foreigner powers is something particularly fundamental to a character, so getting someone to trust aliens more (or less) than they already do, isn't  truly changing who someone is.

Hmm,let me rephrase it then as might not have used the right words.
I'm not refering to her questioning whether the aliens should be allowed
around sensitive areas as thats logical to me but more in the sense of her "World view".
Her views on aliens/foreigners in general would be too pessimistic(my opinion)
and after going down the paragon route, she understands the reasons behind the council's decisions
without just chalking it up to each race protecting their own.:wizard:

Wow, I'm so happy with all the new stuff about Ash being a permanant squaddie. BW was right, the VS was not forgotten.

Anywho does anyone know if the OXM report on the UK dashboard will come out in the US?

On Ash and aliens - I'd just like my paragoning conversation with her to actually have an impact.

I don't think it should change everything about her, but I do think that if I paragon her in ME1 it should make her a little less rough around the edges with some things in ME3.

Basically, she'd be the same - but some of her reactions and dialouge would be a bit different at places.

Does anyone know if there was a flag check for it in the first or second game?

If there isn't a flag check for it, I have to question why they even bothered putting it in the game. I mean... it seemed like a moment where Ash considered a different point of view and softened her own views a bit. That's pretty big.

Then again, I heard similar things from Garrus, only to have him turn into what he was in ME2. So, maybe those character defining conversations fom ME1 don't matter so much, and were never meant to matter.

Paragon hug: Long heartfelt hug

Renegade hug: Long heartfelt hug with a butt grab at the end

I play Paragon, but I wouldn't be able to resist the Renegade option

When it comes to the issue of changing Ashley's views for the better I've always been very much pro-changing. I love Ash, no doubt, great and tough and dependable woman with a lot of heart and courage. A lion heart on the battlefield and a *cough* hellcat off the battlefield.
Hell of a woman.

Still, I'd be lying if I said she was perfect and her political views and her prejudices are a major problem for her. It doesn't help things if she's having difficulty trusting aliens and while I know her distrust isn't nearly as extreme as the less... evolved.... of people might say, and I understand where she's coming from and understand why she thinks that way, truthfully I think it's better for her to be able to move on.

Given that they decided to retcon all her belief changing and character arch during her brief cameo in Mass Effect 2, I hope that we are allowed a proper chance to not so much change her views as convince her to not view everything as black and white. Maybe this can be done as actions rather than words, that may actually work better.

On the top of my head:
Ashley and Garrus holding the line, Reapers are coming in and a horde of husks are advancing. Things are looking grim, Ashley sighs and then laughs. Garrus looks over and asks what's so funny. She replies:
"If my grandfather could see me now, about to fight for my life side to side with a Turian."
To which there is a pause and Garrus responds:
"How about side by side with a friend?"
To which Ashley nods and gives Garrus a sort of final handshake of respect and then they both raise their guns over cover to start shooting.

I know that was kind of ripped from Lord of the Rings but I think, truth be told, that something similar would work. It would certainly show how Ashley's views have changed over the course of the story.

In any case I think Ashley needs to show change in her views, it's for the better really. She's great as she is but I'd love to see what she could become once she let's go of the past and her prejudices.

Oh and by the way Cossack72... I agree with your assessment. I couldn't be able to resist the renegade hug in that instance.

I mean come on:

Hey all! Just dropping by to share something - rather, someone - I discovered last night. If any of you watched So You Think You Can Dance Season 7, this one girl, Rachel Girma? She reminded me a lot of Ash.

I couldn't find an actual photo but I did find a couple of videos. Can't see her face incredibly well, though.

What do you guys think? Yes? No? Just me?

I don't think you change Ashley to the better, if you talk her into becoming more trusting towards aliens. You know, in the ME universe there are just too many of those, who are just out to catch you with your guard down and Ashleys mindset is exactly what is needed in this environment.
Trusting everyone you meet works in Disney Land, but not in the real (or ME) word.

A little I would say.  It doesn't hurt that she is wearing her hair in a bun. :)

Here's the thing. Knowing your job is important, and there is a big difference between the training a Marine receives and a Navy officer receives - before they become SpecOps, that is. Marines do not have "shipboard training" except where the bathroom (head) is and how to operate a watertight door. Therefore for a role as critical as second in command of a prototype reconnaissance starship, you can bet that Shepard was Navy. To say otherwise would be to say that Captain Anderson was Navy, and third in command (Pressly) was Navy, but second in command (Shepard) was Marines. That's not how a "real" military organization would staff things, especially for an experimental vessel.

I will try to ask someone at Bioware for clarification. Let's agree to table this discussion for benefit of the Ashley Williams community in the meantime until I hear back. A few minutes ago I had been convinced that Shepard must have indeed been a Marine based off the EASTORE advertisement link for ME3, but then I realized that in reality the marketing people who create the description are not the same people (the developers) who know the characters. There certainly are inconsistencies, for every example provided in the games of Shepard being referred to as a Marine I can provide one or more that refers to him as Navy. So let me see what I can find out from the horse's mouth.

It doesn't make sense when compared to the real world for there to only be one service for all roles, but that is established canon in the Mass Effect Universe. Instead of having the Army, Navy and Marines as seperate services, the Alliance has sort of combined all three into a single entity. Marines and shipboard personnel (a.k.a. Sailors) are all part of the same service in the Mass Effect universe. A Marine in the Mass Effect Universe is more of an occupational speciality than seperate branch of the Alliance military.

That being said, Shepard is a Marine. Besides being referred to as a Marine in all the marketing and interviews, he's also referred to as a Marine in the game.

I don't recall him ever being referred to as a Sailor.

As for why Shepard, as a Marine, would captain a ship...perhaps shipboard functions are part of the N7 training program? It wouldn't be too far fetched if the N7s also have their own frigates and smaller craft for use on some of their missions, though I can't imagine them using anything larger.

Do you think that Ash will be less spiritual now that she knows about the Reapers or more spiritual. Just a random thought that wandered into my head, like everything else I do.

I'd guess, probably the same.

The old saw about there not being any atheists in foxholes may not be true in the literal sense, but that saying *is* at least based on a kernel of truth. People are more likely to turn toward belief in a higher power when faced with death & disaster, than turn away from it. Since Ashley already believes in some form of a higher power, I'd guess her religious views won't change all that much, if it all.

She didn't seem to change much in ME 1 when she first learned about the Reapers or became aware of the the full extent of the Reapers actions.

At the moment I think she is more focused on stopping Saren and the Geth (probably more so than any other squaddie, except MAYBE Garrus) than on her religious views. And there is no more dialogue after the mission and you only see her at Horizon where she is too mad for reason. Shepard died and a bunch of unlucky things followed. I could see her getting frustrated a little and start to doubt her faith. She is devout though so maybe she just shrugs it off and prays more. Who knows. One things for sure though, Shep and Ash have a lot of catching up to do in ME3.Posted Image

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ And to the above comments on Ash being changed by talking to her in ME1

Garrus has special dialogue depending on what you taught him. He either tries to join C sec again or Spectres. At least I think thats it. I'm assuming something similar will be done for Ash.
