I know ME3 will be chock full of tragedy because it's full on galactic war and all that, etc. etc. I'm wondering how much personal tragedy they'll throw in for Shepard and the squad. I'm kind of hoping they stay away from that, honestly. I'd rather not, for instance have there be a chunk of game about Ash losing her family for example - things like that.

They mentioned awhile back that ME3 wouldn't be as "dark"(?) as ME2, which I sort of gleaned wouldn't be as melodramatic? Hoping that's the case. "Emotionally engaging" is fine. I just don't wanna be bogged down with Battlestar Galactica tone where every episode made you want to give up hope and just kill yourself.

I think the most tragedy we will see will be like the child in the ME3 Earth demo. I can't see half the squadmates wanting to jump of a bridge like the last season of BSG. No one that close to squadmates have died in ME1 or ME2 besides fellow squadmates. I highly doubt that the Williams clan will meet a tradgic end.

I can see a Spacer Shep having to watch as Her/his mother's ship is blown up, or possibly takes out a reaper then is destroyed by debris. A colonist Shepard has to get a reaper off of mindoir, and....well they're already on earth so that takes care of an earthborn Shepard (since default Sheploo is an earthborn background anyway) I can see some personal tragedy for squaddies sine we've already seen Tali's father die, Garrus's mother's dealing with an illness (per LoTSB) Miranda's sister is up in the air, Samara had to kill her daughter. Thane's son is also in the air, Jacob's dad is either dead or in prison (but he's over that cuz he's awesome) Kasumi's boyfriend died (but now she's in love with Jacob) etc. So I could see something happening with the Williams family being in danger and us having to save them with Ashley (possibly where ther first screenshot of her and Loo was shown in the slide show?) plus, I wanna see her family, since one of them thinks Shepard is cute.Posted Image

It will be sad I think. Shepard choosing which squadmate lives or dies. Whose family or planet makes it through or falls to the Reapers. But I don't think there will be that much in game time to deal with the decisions.

I will throw something at the TV if Ashley/Ashley's family gets unilaterally sacrificed and then Liara/someone else mumbles something about "the greater good". Greater good be hanged.

She already has a guaranteed 50% chance of dying. Having her die again would be, uh, overkill (forgive the pun).

I think Shepard will be deciding what will be "the greater good".  It will be interesting to see the final outcome of those decisions.

It would be sad if the only way the galaxy can be saved is if Amaterasu is lost.:(

I do think that the reapers will target every human colony, at least the ones that weren't already hit by the collectors. Harbingers has all the human colonies and he knows that getting to the Williams (if ashley's alive) would get to Shepard the same way it got to Shep when she found out Ash was on horizon. It wouldn't surprise mein the least since Bioware's already put squadmates families in danger since that was half of ME2's loyalty missions. Ashley's family is no different than Oriana Lawson, Kolyat Krios, Ronald Taylor, Morinth, Rael'Zorah, Mrs. Vakarian, etc.

True, but I'd much rather see Amaterasu destroyed but Ash's family got out safe.  That would be "emotionally engaging" in the crying tears of joy category.  hehehe.

yeah something like the planet blows up or something and then Ashley gets a "call" on her omni-tool from Sarah or Mrs. Williams saying that they made it off in time.Posted Image

Right. There's *plenty* of ways to be "emotionally engaging" (BUZZWORD ALERT!) without going the route of "cheap character death".

I want to be able to give Ash some good news. There'll certainly be plenty of the bad.

I know. I don't want them to always thing "emotionally engaging" has to mean doom and gloom. Joy and elation are emotions too. Good ones. I know this won't happen but seeing something like, for example Ash crying and hugging her sisters when she sees them again? I would bawl like a baby at a striptease.

I don't think Ash will take it very well to have to abandon Earth right at her time of greatest distress. I know I wouldn't, even if I knew there was literally nothing I could do. Ashley is the kind of girl to prefer a fight she can't win over desertion (see Virmire).

I can see her being very angry at being able to do nothing about the Reaper invasion while the Normandy slinks away, tail tucked between its legs, fleeing Earth at the beginning of the game.
