I don't think Ash will take it very well to have to abandon Earth right at her time of greatest distress. I know I wouldn't, even if I knew there was literally nothing I could do. Ashley is the kind of girl to prefer a fight she can't win over desertion (see Virmire).

I can see her being very angry at being able to do nothing about the Reaper invasion while the Normandy slinks away, tail tucked between its legs, fleeing Earth at the beginning of the game.

I agree Ashley  would want to do all she could to help Earth. But she is bright enough to know when to fall back from a battle to win the war in the end.

Yeah, but she still wouldn't like it, even though she knew she had to do it.

True. Ash would rather be fighting and winning today than pulling back to fight and win another day.

I guess I'm not seeing it as deserting Earth or running away from a battle. It's not like the Normandy is just going to disappear and keep running into space to get away from the Reapers. Ash and Shepard are going to build an alliance to retake Earth and wipe out the Reapers. There is always emotion in battles and wars. Ash will feel it, but I don't think she will see it as a rout and slinking into the night.

You're right, I guess this is really where it would be a good opportunity to show some of her possible character growth; to have her be able to look at this as what it is--a strategic retreat to prepare for a return in the future, rather than dwell what it *feels* like--leaving Earth to her fate.

I know this won't happen but seeing something like, for example Ash crying and hugging her sisters when she sees them again? I would bawl like a baby at a striptease.

There needs to be some doom and gloom... I mean... world's are being destroyed! Just... none with Ash... Kthxbai!! lol

I'm all for having doom and gloom in a story like this.  Given the story of course it can't be all sunshine and rainbows.  I just don't want it to be oversaturated.

Take for example a homeless woman on my train this morning:

Woman:  Hello everyone. I'm homeless.
(Well that is pretty sad)

Woman:  AND my house just burned down.
(Oh my that's tragic.  I really feel for this woman.  I mean she's probably lying but still, sadface.)

Woman:  And my husband died.
(Holy crap this is terrible. I'm sure she's lying. She has to be, but I better give her a dollar!)

Woman:  Also I have cancer, diabetes and my daughter has a bunch of kittens we can't feed so we'll have to eat them.
(....riiiiight.  I'm over you now.  Think I'll put this money away)

See?  Stop at just a little bit of tragedy and your audience will feel it.  Overdo it and no one gives a sh*t.  That's what I don't want for ME3.

Shepard, did you hear that this side mission villain blew up a building?  (Oh noes!)  It was a school! (OH GOD!)  A BIG SCHOOL WITH LOTS OF DISABLED KIDS!  (...wat)  And they were all petting bunnies!  (I'm turning the game off now, drama queens)

:P

Drama, in wiritng, seems to work best when it's fluid. like if that Lady had said "I lost my house in a fire that claied my husband, I have two pwoerful dieseases and we have to get rid of some kittens because we can't provide for them" that sounds a little better than the stuff getting worse after a little while.

Like Ashley explaining that she'd been part of an ambush. what she said sounded better than.

Comamnder Shepard, I just barely survived those geth. They took out my entire squad. One of them got brutally murdered with all these blood and guts and stuff.

am I right?

:o I hope bioware doesn't do that in me3 either. It would be a lousy game imo. I thought the scene with the boy in the vent was too much.

Well that's not really the point I was making.  I'll still stop reading or watching the well written thing if it's clearly so heavy on the drama and angst it's just being ridiculous.

@Auggy.  I like the boy in the vent.  I think that was done well.  The scene there.  But the spoiler I heard about the actual fate of the boy is a bit much.  Like, we GET IT.  IT'S GRIM.  I'm a smart person.  You don't need to shove it down my throat.  A little bit is good, but there's a fine line.

Doom and gloom is definitely called for given the scope of the story in ME3, but we agree overdoing it is overdoing it. Adding personal tragedy for Ashley on top of everything else sure to be happening (the destruction of worlds, civilizations, species, etc.) would be twisting the knife to no real point other than for cheap "drama", which a good writer can avoid.

Oh, I totally agree! I was just agreeing that I didn't want Ash to have any personal tragedy (aka sisters/mother dying) like you guys were saying. lol

EDIT: Also, I don't think showing the boy from the vent dying as being over the top....

The scene may have been well done. But after crawling through thousands of miles of vents in other games, I would have liked to go in after him if it was to be more than just a feeling of dread insert.

It just didn't seem to fit for me. Racing to get away. Looking forward to see threats. Pry open the door to move on. Oh, let me go back and see what's in this vent.

After a while of playing Mass Effect 2...

*Looks at controller*

Huh, it's an Xbox.  Wierd....

*Opens up tray and inspects dist.*

Oh, for a minute there I thought Max Payne 3 had come out early!

I mean seriously, if I wanted personal tragety to an extreme I would go back and play Max Payne, and that's not a diss to the game at all, because it is very entertaining in its own right.  A very personal, introverted story that was cool and stylish.

but Mass Effect 1 was built on the concept of preventing galaxy-wide Armeggedon, with personal stories taking a back seat to stopping Saren and eventually Sovereign.  I mean, everyone had their quirks and character flaws, but you could at least count on everyone to have their @#&! together when crunch time came.

Ash is a proffesional soldier, and she always puts duty before emotions, and isn't the type to make backroom deals or go on a quest for revenge when there are greater things at stake.

It's a start. But the first one makes my thighs look too big and the second need a little less collar. But I'm leaning toward the second. :)
