Just a little scene between Ash and Shepard I imagined in my spair time.

Shepard and Ashley are having coffee in the mess on the SR-2.  Miranda walks to her cabin, while the eyes of every male crew member follow her. However, Shepard is smart enough to stare at his coffee until she's gone from sight. Even so, Ashley notices how hard he's trying not to look.

Ashley:(teasingly) "I have a hard time believing you stayed faithful."
Shepard:(innocently) " Why would you say that?"
Ashley:(sarcastically) "Oh I don't know. It could be the fact that you were alone on a ship with your secretary, a spandex supermodel, and a woman who wears only a belt from the waist up." 
Shepard:(nonchalant) " Also Tali made a move on me...:whistle:" *sips coffee*
Ashley:*Deathglare* 
Shepard: "Relax Ash, Tali and Jack aren't my type, Kelly actually wanted me to try and repair things with you, and uh *chuckles* Miranda's not my priiiiiiizzee.
Ashley: "Prize? I don't get it."
Shepard:(still bemused)"I pray you never do. Anyways, you give yourself too little credit. You're a hard act to follow."
Ashley:(not buying it) "Seriously though,what's your secret?"
Shepard:"I requisitioned myself alot of cold showers." 

Miranda walks back towards the elevator and Shepard, being a smart man, decides to take an extra long sip of his coffee. 

Ashley: "Still, I don't know if I could not hit that."
Shepard: *sprays coffee across the table onto Mordin as he passes by*

Mordin: "Shepard! my favorite lab coat! WHY!?!?!"

and Ashley excused herself from the table in order to roll on the floor laughing hysterically. 

*THE END*

that made the WHOLE thing spectacular, plus Mordin's lab coat being ruined.

I've never understood how anyone could choose to let Ash die on Virmire if she was their LI. Not if they really cared for her.

The way I roleplay the event is, it is not so much a choice to let Ash die on Virmire. The bomb activates with a dead man's switch in my scenario.  She gave Shepard no choice.  She held onto her position, and her life, long enough to see Shepard and co. escape. Ashley's death on Virmire is, in my story, Ashley's Victory.

Love is more than selfishness

I don't see it as selfishness to want someone to live. To be able to enjoy their life even if they don't spend it with you. Shepard has no guarantees how long they will be together. What will happen in the future. In that last final second where the choice is made there is no decision, if he loves Ash, he will save her.

If Shepard doesn't love Ash he might let her die or save her.

In your scenario you say she took away Shepard's choice. But that is not possible. The choice is Shepard's whether you accept that or not.

You said you never understood how anyone could let Ash die that cares for her. What does that have to do with choice? I tried to help you understand the motivation of someone who cares for Ash the character but lets her die. Trying to score points by moving the goal line, pal?

This is where the glory of Multiple Playthroughs comes into play. You can love someone, but as a soldier the mission comes first, which is why BOTH Ashley and Kaidan say to save the other one, even when they are being romanced. The ultimate goal of the mission is to make sure that bomb goes off and you ahve to leave someone behind. It's not "well I love X so Y is getting left" that's not thinking like a LT. Commander that's thinking like a Civilian, which is why both VS's give Shepard crap about the decision. It's not "I knew you wouldn't leaveme behind Shepard" it's always "why'd you bring me it should have been her/him!"

That's why there are fraternization policies in the military. Even the brass knows that a good soldier will choose to save his love when it's his choice.

On my most recent ME1 playthrough, I built Ash as the sharpshooter of the team, maxed out her sniper rifle skill. MY Shep could snipe halfway decently, but Ashley would more often than not do a kill-steal just as I was gettign a bead on the target.

Question time: What are some of your favorite builds for Ashley? (Assumes "tank" will be a popular option here.)

I had her on Assault Rifles, Shotguns, and Sniper Weapons.  She was probably the most useful ally in the game because you could take your eye off her for a sec to revive someone and she would be fine.

fave build is sharpshooter. I got used to not using Garrus cuz turian collosus was hard to find I mazed out her sniper skill and put explosive ammo on her spectre rifle. she routine bounces burning enemies for the ammusement of my Sheps.

Which is why I only died ONCE on insanity with it Ashley didn't get to half health once either and she didn't even have fully leveled up armor.
