Don't let Alistair duel him, he will always kill him on the spot. You need to win the duel yourself, then Riordan will stride in and offer the Joining.Grace1957 wrote...

Alistair will leave your group for the rest of that game. You have the optiosn of "Marry him to anora" if he is hardened and they agreed prior, Allow Anora to Exile him, Allow Anora to Execute him.
Any choice you make will result him leaving if you spare Loghain.
Actually I don't think they even hd to agree prior you just have to have hardened him.

You really miss a lot if you don't let Zevran live at least once. He is one of the coolest companions in the game really. Or doesn't he count?
There are a lot of reasons why anyone would like to keep Loghain alive, just as there are many reasons why someone would want to kill him. It should be easy to find some of the many threads regarding this subject where people have listed their reasons for doing either. Calling him evil isn't very helpful either, as I doubt you can find two people who agree of what "evil" is anyway.

No better reason than this: Her game, her money she chooses to do that this game and seeks help to figure out how to do it so she comes to the boards where people can help. She doesnt' need any other reason than that.

Is it possible to keep logain alive and still have Alistair and Anora marry? I try to keep him alive, but I always feel like I'm ruining things by ending the Therin bloodline. ><
Yes harden AListair, you duel Loggie and then when Riordan says his "lets make him a GW" thing agree. Make Anora and Alistair rule jointly, (he will be pissed and leave group) and then Loggy gets the Darkspawn cocktail.
If you go this scenario I THINK you have to set it up prior to the Landsmeet but I could be wrong. Once when I wanted them to marry and joint rule I killed Loghain and just off the cuff asked them without setting it up ahead of time. (I didn't want to go back through the Alienage and fight the slavers a second time).

>< No wonder it's so hard for me. I never harden Alistair. I never even knew how until I looked it up. Seems rather...silly to me that it is such a small thing for such an important character. =/

He's absolutely NOT evil - read the books. It's much more complicated than that...
On the surface, I see many reasons to spare Loghain, the hero. I am not a Loghain fan, I admit.
My PCs whether "evil" or "good" can not betray Alistair nor can they bear the potential risk of a Loghain betrayal; so, he dies every single time.
I also do not find that Loghain has any kind of true remorse through his dialogue if you spare him; so, why bother sparing him and redeming him - it is not a true redemption unless Loghain repents.

Loghain: "Please, I've done so much wrong. Allow me to do one thing right", when he asks you to allow him to kill the archdemon.
Loghain is not the kind of person to get on his knees and beg for forgiveness, but he clearly regrets some of what he did. What he did at Ostagar? He probably doesn't regret (especially after he finds out what Cailan was up to). But the rest, you can easily see in the cutscenes that it's taking a heavy toll on him, both physically and psycologically.

Exactly. People get disapointed and think he doesn't show any remorse if you let him live. And it's true that when you talk to him in camp he is still pretty much in denial over what he has done. It's on the roof of Fort Drakon, that you see true remorse from himm, especially if you get his approval up a bit. Even his voice changes.
