And they never let you hang up on TIM. >:-(

I do sort of wonder why there's no 'walk out of the hologram ring' option. "Yeah, you go ahead and keep this expensive walkie-talkie going, Mr. Man. I'm going back to work."

Conversations with TIM always felt a bit forced to me and it really was annoying that most of the time i was forced to agree with him in the end just to advance the plot. I preferred the ME1 conversations with the council.

The most likely reason for the change is simple enough.

Paragon Shepard is the one who has ideological differences with TIM, while Renegade Shepard is the one who has ideological differences with the council. The difference being, when Renegade Shepard has had enough of somebody he doesn't hesitate to be a huge **** about it, while Paragon Shepard remains much more composed and respectful in his disagreements.

Differences in attitude.

For me, the most gratifying moment in ME 1&2 to date was when I finished my first renegade playthrough in ME1 and saved the Destiny Ascension. Velarn said something like: "Your species has a fierce, savage spirit. An indomitable will that will not bend or yield," which was exactly the thing my renegade Shepard was all about, so those words were everything I wanted to hear.

I had been pissed about Velarn's attitude towards humans, but to see him swallow his pride (temporarily at least) and give credit and praise when it was due made me not only aware of what I think is ME's major theme (the nature of humanity) but it also made him one of my favorite characters (on par with Liara and Kirrahe.

I support this thread. Councilor Velarn (the name is still somewhat unclear, isn't it?) is a great character. We all love to hate him, but really people who Shepard can't just roll over are all too rare in the ME universe. I'd like to see him again. And yes, I long to tell him "I told you so" just as about a million other players do, I suppose.

I just found out that the epic voice behind this epic turian councilor is a guy named Alistair Duncan! Kind of reminds you of two of the leading roles of Dragon Age doesn't it?

It seems Velarn and Nihlus share more than colony markings. Haven't even noticed they had the same voice actor before.

I didn't pick up on it during my first playthrough but I did notice during my second. Do you think that perhaps in an early stage of story production, Nihlus and Councilor Velarn might have been the same person? Like instead of answering directly to the council you would answer to a Spectre superior and the lines he has now were originally meant to come from Nihlus?

Nihlus was a really well made character and i don't think they intended to kill him off that soon or at all but in the end they did. So maybe in the beginning they were meant to fill in the same role.

I don't know if he has a role in the books or something, but I'm not sure I agree with the idea that Nihlus is a well made character. He has one conversation during which he serves the primary function of spouting exposition, and then gets maybe 3 or 4 more lines in the eden prime mission.

Just not enough time to develop him well. He had potential to be a good character, but died way too early for it to actually happen.

Yes he had potencial. Maybe if we got to know him better his death by Saren would have been more dramatic and he could have been a great source of information about Saren.

If you did get to have him as a guest squad mate, which would be really awesome, what would he say when he kills bad guys? Like a catch phrase like Garrus has when he says: "Scoped and dropped!"

"DISMISS THIS!" or "Ah yes 'living enemies', I've dismissed that claim'

There's no way he will ever be a squadmate, but I would endorse a "Dismiss THIS" line.

Hey, just a quick question. It's my understanding that the save file created to load into ME3 already exists and people who know where to find it can see what decisions it keeps track of.

Does anybody know whether or not it tracks your interactions with the Council in ME2 if they survived? I'd guess it tracks whether or not you accepted Spectre reinstatement at the least, but am curious if we can't find some more clues about what we can expect to see from Councilor Velarn in ME3.

I support a Velarn/Grunt airquote-off. I think the Councilor would win, he's mastered the art, but krogan are survivors, he might surprise us.

Are there any other contenders I haven't run into yet? I think they're the only airquoters you meet.

Personally, I think Velarn is one of the most effectively written characters in ME2.  He appears in just one brief scene, yet the seething hatred and boiling (out)rage he managed to induce in me the first time I played through that scene was the most powerful emotional reaction the game managed to get out of me, barring Horizon (which I dreamt about for two nights afterwards) and Tali's loyalty mission (which was the first and only video game moment that's ever made me cry).  I was literally struck speechless by the *gall* of the turian.

if he doesn't listen to my Shep in ME3, she is going to frickin' kidnap him and force him to come along on every single mission so he can see the truth for himself.

He'll still probably dismiss it.  ****er.

I saw this picture over in the Garrus thread and found it pretty entertaining, so I thought I'd share it here.

I just now decided I want an hour alone with Velarn to slap him silly and make him see some sense.

Ah, yes, the "list of Squadmate Support Threads."  We have dismissed this claim.
If Matriarch Aethyta gets her (under 1-page) group thread, why doesn't Councilor J.P. Velarn?

Because we don't know if his name is Velarn or not.... Lemondwizard and I have had this discussion already.

Trust me, it's a lost cause. Not worth bringing up again.

I think I figured out why the turain councilor is such a A-hole. Bioware is saving him for the paragon ending (and I mean the paragon of paragon ending), for that paticular ending, councilor will say

"you human are alright."

And that will make playing the entire trilogy worth it.

Many people don't seem to remember that Councilor Velarn was the most openly grateful of the three after you saved them in that ending. He's a jerk, but he knows when you did something right and isn't afraid to admit it.
