Intro
So, no surprise; yet another fan of Dragon Age: Orgins harboring the desire to use the game's background to frame their own idea for a story. What can I say, I was a sucker for the game's dialogue and character interactions (Alister and Oghren especially). I must confess, i am not a writer by trade (I'm a law student). In fact, I consider my spelling and use of grammer to be boderline atrocious. I just hope that I am able not only to entertain those who actually read the story, but that I am also able to enhance my writing and narrative skills by crafting something that I find enjoyable. But enough about me, below you'll find the everything that you will need to know about Arcane Renaissance and how you can participate in the story's creation.
MISSION STATEMENT: YOU MAKE THE CHOICE
I don't know if this has been "done" on this particular forum before, not that it matters, but I wanted to draft a story that was guided by the choices of the audience (assuming I can even attract one). I think that everyone will agree on this point, but one of the reasons that Dragon Age was so enjoyable, was the variety of choice and their amusing consequences. (licking lamp posts in winter anyone?)
Arcane Renaissance will attempt to mimic the player/ audience choice from Dragon Age Origins by creating a number of "choices" at the end of any respective section. So, after reading a sectioin of story, you the audience will be able to asses what exactly is going on, and based on personal taste, desire, etc, you can choose how the "main character of" of Arcane Renaissance will react to the given situation. By doing so, you the audience will in effect create a substanial portion of the plot for the next sectiion of Arcane Renaissance.
Though cleary the medium of "forum writing" will severly limit the expression of audience choice to something akin to "choose your own adventure" stories, (those books where after reading to the bottom of the page you made a choice by flipping to a particular page number; eg: "if you want to go right turn to page 67, if you want to go left turn to page 84") I still think that "audience choice" would still be powerful force not only in creating the desire to read more, but also in challenging me to incorporate "the choice" into the story's narrative. Essentially "the audience" and "the author" take turns crafting and spectating, meaning that those lables really don't apply as they would in traditional author guided linear narratives.
So that's the theory of this particular fan fic let me break it down into the tangible rules that I envision so far:
OVER ALL STORY: TIME
The overall story of Arcane Renaissance, is that it takes place before any of the events in Dragon Age Origins (when I'm not exactly sure, but I'm sure that will be fleshed out). Such a choice means that abybody who is willing to read can all start on the same page and no one has to worry about what choices "the Warden" (everyone's own personal character in Dragon Age Origins) has made through the course of their respective story.
OVERALL STORY: CHARACTER BACKGROUND
The story of Renaissance itself will take place from the perspective of a YOUNG INITIATE OF THE CIRCLE OF MAGI. This choice I know is far more limiting than the birth of options available in Orgins, but I have selected it for several key reasons. 1) mage's by their very existance create a huge diaspera of potential conflicts and choices for you the audience (Templars, the fade, deamons, spirits, general mistrust, etc.), 2) Mages have acess to plenthora of spells and abilities that allows them to approach a particular obstacle in many different ways. 3.) I like mages 4.) maybe I can peel off some of those Harry Potter fans and get them to read this story 5.) Insert valid reason here ->_______________ 6.) Insert an invalid or ridiculous reason here ->___________________
OVERALL STORY: LOCATION
Ferelden at first, but hopefully as the the story progresses it will move to some really outlandish and amazing places.
HOW VOTING WILL WORK: GENERAL RULES
The choice made by the "main character" will be determined based on a tally of votes made by "commenting" on the specific topic of the posted story section (only 1 vote for each category). Whatever choice has the most votes will be the action undertaken by the main character. In the event of a tie I suppose we can have a run off vote of the choices that are in the running. However, if for whatever reason, the run offs become uwieldy or impractical (example: only 3 persons read this fan fic and none of them ever agree on what direction the story should take) then I reserve the right to pull a Vice President of the United States, and cast the deciding vote of those choices in the run off. Hopefully, this will never happen and the choice will entirely remain in audience hands.
HOW VOTING WILL WORK: WINDOW TO VOTE
this will need to be fleshed out more depending on how the story creation process developes, but I envision a week long period (7 Days) starting from the time and date that story section is posted here in the forum. The week long period should probably be enough for persons to read any given section at their liesure and then vote accordingly. If anyone feels that this amount of time is not apropriate, then please feel free to make suggestions in this thread.
HOW LONG BETWEEN EACH SECTION IS POSTED
Honestly, this will really depend on everything that happening to me at any given time. Currently i am working as a clerk in a Public Defender's office for the summer (those lawyers that the state provides if your facing time in pokey/jail) and I don't know what the demands of the supervising attorney and clients will be yet. As such, I and I am sure that you, the audience will want to see a posting occur as fast as possible. So far my hope is that I can write something to be posted at least every two weeks. This obviously could change based on circumstances outside my perview, but I don't imagine most sections taking more than 2 weeks (of course I say this now before I have writen anything). hopefully, i'm wrong and I can get you all new post incorporating the winning vote in 1 week, but please nobody hold their breath or hope against hope. I don't want to be laible/sued for crushing anyones expecations on this matter.
CREATE THE MAIN CHARACTER
Finally, it's time for everyone interested to help create the main character. This process will not be as detailed as the character creation menu in Dragon Age Origins, but this choices will have an impact on the general outline of a story that I have floating around in my head at the moment. There are 3 Catagories that you can vote on now that will impact how the 1 first story section will begin (Sex, Race, General Background)
CREATE THE MAIN CHARACTER: SEX
1) Male
2) Female
I know that the social sciences may have some critques on these lables, but they will get the job done here. please vote on what gender you would like the main character of Arcane Renaissance will be.
CREATE THE MAIN CHARACTER: RACE
3) Human
4) Elf
Sorry Dwarf fans. because the story is about a mage, its very difficult to see how a Dwarf could be the main character (it goes beyond my skill as an amature writer anyways). Maybe I can make this up in the future by adding a cool dwarf character in the story at some point, but right now I can't make any promises. In short please select what race the main character will be in Dragon Age Arcane Renaissance.
CREATE THE MAIN CHARACTER: GENERAL BACKGROUND
5) Nobel (Human only) - the main character came from an established and wealthy family before the character's "condition" for harnessing magic was discovered during adolecents. The character spent at least a decade in the splendor of an elite family in an elite class.
6) Commoner (Elf or Human) - the main character's was born to an impoverished family (elves, your looking at the alienage; humans, a farming family). Life up to adolecents can be described as tough, rough, but personal connections to one's family members are inseperable. The discovery of the main character's gift for magic varies drastically between elves and humans.
Elves generally view the gift with a combination of both happiness and loss. A member of the community will be lost to them, but they will escape the drudgery of poverty and iron law of human overlords.
Human commoners view magic with great predjudice and fear. Magic is a mark of sin. A condition that threatens the world with both deamons and abominations. Certainly the Tevinter Imperium, and its history of magic imbued tyrants is not a model most societies would freely follow if given the choice.
7) Child of the Chantry (Elf or Human) - the main character's parents were themselves mages and members of the circle. Their shared moment of lust/love concieved the main character within the tower itself. When the pregnancy and subsequent birth was discovered, the main character was "confiscated" from the biological parents and nurtured by vairous members of the chantry. When it was discovered that the main character also had an affinity for magic. The main Character was quickly turned over to the circle, and the parents sent away to other holdings.
8) captured/ naturalized Dalish (Elf only) In the constant skirmish and conflict between the settled socities of humanity and the wandering tribes of Dalish, the Main Character's Clan was hit particularly harshly by a human raid. Already an adolecent with magical affinity, the main character was viewed as a potential candidate to be trained as the next keeper when he/she was captured in the human raid. Sent to the circle to both divulge the magical lore of the Dalish, and to undergo naturalization. Should either process fail, the path of tranquil is the next obvious step.
CLOSING
so, As far as I can tell, this should be enough information to get the ball rolling. I hope people on the forum are just as excited about this whole process as I am. If there are anyquestions please feel free to post them and I will do my best to respond. I do hope that my grammer and or spelling mistakes are not too distracting. In the future I will do my best to better edit my work, but I must admit that i have a poor background in either. On one final note, becuse this is the begining of the story, I will leave the voting on the foundational elements of the main character for 2 weeks in order to get a better grasp of how to manage this this project and too give time for people's suggestions to be incorporated into the total plan (so please suggest to your heart's content).
In closing I want to thank anyone who managed to keep reading and actually voted. I hope to reward your efforts with an amusing story that we can both work on to make our own.
