At the point where you bring Zathrian to the Werewolves, I decided to fight Zathrian because I considered him a stubborn ass.  After beating him, he kills himself so the Spirit (and thus the curse) can be released.  The Werewolves turn back to humans, and all is well.

Except I get the achievement, "Poacher: Side with the Elves".  I don't feel I took ANYONE's side, and if I did I was more on the Werewolve's side than anything.

Assuming it's a glitch?

Nope. Taking the werewolves side would have netted you their help instead of the Dalish elves' help in the battle against the darkspawn. There may be several ways to do it, but the only way I've found requires decent coercion skill.

Edit: Meaning that the curse cannot have been lifted; I fought Zarthain as well, but he always chickens out and lifts the curse.  So explore what options you have that end up with the curse remaining but the wolves willing to fight the darkspawn.

Alright, thanks. I'm not hung up achievements anyway, but it felt a bit odd getting an achievement labelled "Poacher" when I managed to reverse the curse without killing all the werewolves.

I was a bit disappointed, as well.

Not about how the quest ended, because that was perfect for my playing style, getting both sides to do the right thing to the better of all. And it was well told and emotionally satisfying. Just like it was in Redcliffe concerning Connor ...

I think there should be a third achievement, that would be perfect. One for killing the werewolves, one for killing the elves and one for the third option... lifting the curse with minimal casualties.

You sided with the elves (Zhavran is not "the elves," he is just 1 individual) by ending the curse that afflicted them - you happen to help out the Werewolf as well.

To side with Werewolves you have to not side with Lady of the Forest (who is just 1 individual) and side with Swiftrunner who is more representative of werewolf feelings.

I took the werewolves side, talked Zethrian into killing himself to lift the cure, the werewolves were returned to human form, Witherfang ceased to be with the end of the curse.

And as far as the game is concerned I sided with the Dalish, but I can't really see why, I accept the attacks on them stop, Witherfang is no more but talking Zethrian into lifting the cures and killing himself must surely also be pro werewolves.

It is pro both - to really be pro werewolves, you have to persuade the lady to attack the dalish camp with you and wipe the elves out.

The 4 factions are

The Werewolves - Want the Elves dead for vengence, lifting the curse is bonus but not priority.

The Lady of the Forest - Wants it all to end one way or the other, she is just tired of being bond all this time.

Zharavan - wants the Werewolves to suffer till the end of time

The Daelism - wants their members to be cured of the curse (indifferent if werewolve are dead or not)
