I was on my WAR, and doing the ashes quest.  out popped a white bloodmage......i hit holy smite, and it only took about a third of his health!  i reloaded and tried again to see if it was a resist issue.....but got the same results......

is this spell absolutely worthless?, or do you have to pump willpower pretty high to get a bigger bonus to the damage it causes?

anyone have a WAR that has one-shotted mages with this ability??

what i did was go dw get spell immunity

then after 36 dex and 42 strength go 2 strength 1 willpower

i ended up with 70 strength 36 dex 34 willpower

id open with scattershot-->run to ranged targets--->holy smite--->dual weapon sweep---->whirlwhind

melee follow u from the aggro with scattershot and then get aoed down very rarely something lived my bow was Fal-Daron Reach or whatever and i had Vesihlle and Starfang

but since i get to patch 1.03 holy smite crashes my game 70% of the time for whatever reason so I dont use that build anymore lol

It's not worthless - a medium range area of effect that damages and drains mana, and can stun or knockback. And the stun is a physical resistance check that mages may well fail, giving the templar time to get within melee range. But it does scale with the templar's willpower, so it will never be mistaken for mana clash.

Have to agree Holy Smite is stinky. The dmg is mediocre, and the stun and knockdown checks use your willpower score. So lots of resists - especially against melee type characters. Please it costs a ton of stamina to use. War Cry + Superiority is far, far better. Templar is really only worth going to Cleanse Aura. The last two talents are just subpar.

Well, the Holy Smite barages in the Circle Tower will eat a Mage heavy party alive if you're not careful. Your Templar's Holy Smite works best used the same way, as part of a mass barage of ranged attacks and spells. One Templar Holy Smiting by himself won't likely do much against more powerful enemies.

I can't call holy smite worthless because, contrary to what you might expect, it seems to work on everything, and doesn't require line of sight. It's a great tool to seize the initiative with at the beginning of the fight, being instant and ranged. While your mage(s) works on casting other spells and your archer is still winding up scattershot, your warrior can stun and knock down a group of enemies for a very low opportunity cost. By the time a mage or archer recovers, your melee can already be in range.

You know that blood mage at the end of the elven alienage that likes to cast Blizzard on the platform your party starts on?  Holy Smite him while your own mage is winding up a blizzard.  As far as I know it's one of only four abilities that work in that situation:  mana clash and the offensive glyphs.

^^ Spell Cleanse from the templar and then charge him? A high spell resist Templar with Spell Cleanse should resolve most mage issues. Holy Smite comes fairly late in the game and you should be able to have some good gear by then.

What is your experience with Holy Smite against non-mage characters? It seems like it is fairly ineffective against Warriors and Rogues (the stun/knockdown part)

Holy Smite: Damage sucks, mana drain sucks, doesn't work worth a damn vs. melee opponents, and it's horribly overpriced.

OTOH, it's a ranged stun / knockdown that almost always works vs. mage types. If utilized solely in this manner, it's quite effective. About the only thing slightly interesting about Templars.

Yes, but cleanse area is reactionary, and in that specific case, your mage will have been knocked down/interrupted by the enemy blizzard already. I strongly prefer action to reaction. In other cases, cleanse's small area of effect centered around the warrior is a weakness when compared to the range of holy smite.

It still stuns non-mage targets and knocks everyone around it down, which is all you need to interrupt scattershot. No damage and no mana drain, but I don't use it on mages for the damage anyway... it's about the stun/knockdown. I just glanced at my no mage Cauthrien video, and Alistair knocks out four archers with it at base will. /shrug. It's not 100%, but it works. I imagine warriors and rogues only seem to resist more because of higher physical resist.

Edit in response to Random:  yes, it's definitely overpriced, but I've found it works well enough when I need it--which is what I use it for, when I need a ranged stun *now* without tying up my mage.

I find it most useful on Mages and Archers, esp those that are Rogues. With Holy Smite in the mix, I have yet to lose one of those unsanctioned Proving matches. It may not be the overpowered kill shot some desire, but I find it very useful.

It has it's limited uses, the other warrior specs are far better overall imo though. I just use gernades if I want my warriors to have a bit more range and aoe.

Holy Smite actually drains more mana than it does health. ast it on an enemy mage, and you might be able to keep them from casting more dangerous spells (Misdirection Hex, for example). It will also knock enemies back, good if you're surrounded. I know it's very effective in the final battle against grunts, as it wipe out a whole lot of them at once.
