The viability of a Spirit Healer mage PC character

So I was thinking about starting up a Dalish Rogue as a first character, but that was before I looked at the mage talent trees.

After looking at them I noticed that there was quite a lot of options for a (relatively) non-aggressive support character in there. But the question is, are these support talents mostly thought for the NPC chars and to supplement a damage dealing mage, or is this a viable main route for a PC char without gimping him too much?

Basically for it to be viable you will need to always have access to high damage dealing party members. Will this be the case or will you sometimes be "alone"?

I would have at least one or two damage spells with any mage build, even if you don't plan on using them in group play. You never know if you are going to be plopped down somewhere solo.

Being a Spirit Healer doesn't mean you're forced into healing, remember you have a ton of spells at your disposal, only four of which are actual healing spells. And you can take two specializations.

I'm thinking more of trying to play a passive/healing character from a RP perspective, that is, someone who tries to avoid doing harm to others (directly) as much as possible for whatever reason.

In many MMO's you can get to the end game playing a priest/healer without ever doing any damage to a creature, if you always group. So I was just wondering if technically speaking something like that would be possible in DA:O, with some exceptions maybe.

In that case, you have glyphs, hexes, and buffs. Not to mention you can take damaging spells to get to a non-damaging spell, and just not use it. The biggest issue would be area of effect stuff, if nothing else I would suggest grabbing some of that.

My mage is going to be a spirit healer/shapeshifter that uses heals, hexes, and spell protection buffs, and some mana drains + going to get fire or frost weapons for sure.

Just buffing and healing could make for interesting play. Might be a bit difficult if your solo though.

You typically get your first NPC's early on, and it's not likely that you'll ever lose them all unless you act like a rude ******.

The first part of each origin story likely involves some solo combat though.

As said, during the origin story there's likely to be some things you have to handle alone. Apparantly there's also (at least) one part later in the game you have to do on your own, so having no offensive abilities whatsoever is probably not the brightest of ideas.

Thanks for the tips. Maybe I'll stick to a Rogue first off to see how the game plays and try a Mage Spirit Healer on a second run.

I think it will be possible, but a bit trickier if you are ever seperated from your party. Every mage begins with Arcane Bolt, so you can manage some form of offense even if all your other spells are heals and enhancements.

I'd only heal if I can wear plate. =X

Mages don't need to be an Arcane Warrior to wear heavier armors, but it does make it a lot easier, just FYI.

I would do spirit healer and shapeshifter...kinda like wynne in the dragon fight gameplay

switch to your form to deal damage and switch out to heal

Mages can wear armor? Is there some sort of skill that they need to take in order to do so?

Nope. They just need to meet the stat (in this case strength) requirements to use the item (in this case armor.)

I'd say go with entropy spells. There are some spells (sleep) that disable opponents and others (nightmare) that don't do physical damage, but spirit damage.

Thanks for the clarification Vaeliorin.
