Custom followers are different from just creating custom enemies/creatures, though there is going to be some overlap. But the wiki actually has a really nice documentation on creating custom followers:

That should get you pretty up to speed on followers, and teach you most of the ins and outs of the toolset at the same time. Really a great contribution to the community, that page.
