Let's say you played a male Shepard in ME1, started to romance Ashley, but in some twist of fate, decided to save Kaiden at that pivotal moment. Is this sort of thing commented on in ME1/2? I was thinking about going back and playing through both again just to see what would happen and if it would be mentioned that you "sacrificed" a romance for "the greater good" - but I decided it would be quicker to just ask. It'd be interesting to know that some effort was put into this type of scenario.
Has anyone tried this?

I don't think anything special happens, because I'll bet people would have discussed that already and videos would be uploaded of it.
And Virmire takes place before Ilos, so there really hasn't been a romance (game wise anyway).
Edit: I even remember people talking about sacrificing Ashley or Kaidan in order to avoid a romance so their Shepard's are single for the second game. That's a 180 all the way there I reckon.

I just avoid talking to Kaiden, Ashley, and Liara period to avoid romance.

I did this in my main playthrough... And no, nothing special happens. When Shepard is removing his things from his locket in the Normandy (after Virmire) he's alone and nobody comes to confort him; also before Ilos you don't have the "love" cutscene.
When you jump into ME2, again, nothing special.
