This is meant to be the gameplay discussion forum and has been that way
since the release of ME2, why all of a sudden have the character fan
threads moved here? These are two completely different communities and
this move doesn't really benefit either. Could a dev post an explanation
or some kind of announcement at least?

According to the forum home description, this forum is meant for the creative works of the fans. According to the sticky on the actual forum, this forum is meant for discussion of character builds and gameplay. According to the sticky on the Official Campaign Quests and Storylines, this forum is now meant for character discussion.

I assume the character threads were moved here because people were asking for them to be moved to their own forum and people pointed out that this forum had "Mass Effect 2 Characters" in the title. As someone who enjoyed discussing the "classes and builds" aspect, I'm not pleased with the change in direction of the forum. But the mods didn't sound like they wanted to add yet another forum to the mix. They weren't going to please everyone no matter what route they took.

This just means this is now the useless forum instead of the story one (because people really need to discuss a story they have no say in apparently). Anyone know of another ME2 forum altogether where there aren't retards posting about characters that'll probably die by ME3?

I wish they could just create a forum for the support threads. I have zero interest in them but there is no way for me to avoid them. I guess this is now the useless forum as you say....

Never saw threads like this... never believed that fictional game characters could be replacements for pop star posters in your room to such. Never believed that forum admins coudl annoy so much by putting completely unrelated topics together. Well. Looking out for tactical gameplay hints between all those 100+ pages of virtuality adoration threads.

Well, theoretically, you could not click on the links that would cause you to read them. I don't know your specific situation so I'm not going to advise it, but I will say others have had success with this technique in the past.

I've been asking for a separate subforum for Characters (apart from classes and Builds) for a while now. I also made an AdBlock filter which I'll need to update if there are people who don't want to see the titles/page numbers on the front page (of this forum now, anyway).

But I thought folks liked to say "the characters are the focus of ME2s story".

Haha, guess I was right all along: The characters arent the focus of the story - Bland shooter missions are the focus of ME2s story.

I agree with the OP. I don't know what the solution is but i tended to avoid the gameplay forum becuase it seemed so spammed with these support threads. Oh well...is there another ME2 forum that's on par with this one? I checked out Gamespot and XBA and it just isn't the same level of discussion.

Well, go to the storyline forum.  It's nearly dead now that the character threads have moved.

This does sound like the best solution

Ther problem with moving them here is: at least most of the character discussion is story based. In terms of tactical gameplay classes and builds, not so relevent. Seems like they are only here because this forum has 'character' in the title. Bizarre choice, IMO.

Well, others don't want them in the 'Storyline' portion of the forum. Why? Still not sure, as supposedly these characters are the only thing worth discussing from ME2's mediocre and plot-hole filled story. It was a 'character focused' story afterall.

You could just not click on them. Its a pretty easy process.

That's my point. The threads are going to clutter and annoy some no matter what forum they are in (which is why they need their own forum), but at least in the story forum they were more relevent.

I think the the threads actually prevent the need for a new topic every time someone wants to discuss any aspect of a character, so I do think that you're never getting rid of them (I like the on topic discussion in a lot of the threads themselves) but it seems like whereas in the story forum they were just busying up the first page, here they are off topic and counter-productive to what this forum is meant to be about: tactical gameplay. Read the sticky.

Sigh. The cyncical part of me thinks that Priestly just wants them in an irrelevent forum so he can call them off-topic and close them, but as I said: they are (IMO) a necessary 'evil' if you like.

It's been said for months: they need a sub-forum of their own.

If the topic were of direct support of the character, such as saying how much you like the character, how much you like the romance, how much you like the character's role in the story, then yes, having people constantly post a new topic to say essentially the same thing over and over is a bit unnecessary.

However, if the topic were an analysis of the Sidonis situation, a discussion of how the Teltin facility in Jack influenced later biotic research, a comparison of Thane and Samara's methods of killing, speculation on asari biotic evolution, or how turian civil duty works -- starting a new topic would help keep the discussion focused on the subject.

Restricting such topics into a specific character support thread might ensure your discussion is only with people you wish to have a dialogue with, which is fine for a character group. Somewhat limiting in gaining perspective from varied sources.

Your mileage may vary.

It doesn't restrict. There can still be discussion threads for those (there still are discussion threads for those). Those discussion can still happen in the story forum (it's story) I'm saying the character support threads need their own fourm. One per character. Specific character/story moments will always have a place for discussion in the story forum. Moving the fan threads to this forum hasn't changed that.

This is certainly one approach but your implementation requires, for me at least, too much work since titles change fairly frequently.  The ability to hide/ignore forum posts that you have zero interest in would also work.  Some forum boards provide that but it's probably custom code.

The character threads were moved due to many requests and a desire to keep the Storyline forum clear of spoilers and some clutter. Many complained that the numerous threads were preventing actual discussion of storyline topics. So we moved them here since character discussion is a part of this forum.

end of line.
