I know that shale gets some spirit damage crystals and that a few spells like Blood Control and waking nightmare will do massive spirit damage under the right conditions but is spirit damage something like mana/stamina or is it part of your characters health?

It's just a type of elemental damage. 5 types: fire, cold, electricity, nature, and spirit

It's the damage type that appears as purple.

No, its a type of  elemental  damage.  Like fire damage.     And  as such, damages the target's health.

As far as I know, the only elemental damage type that  does more than simply draining a target's health would be Electricity damage - which also drains their stamina.

Spirit is the single elemental damage type, which no creature is immune to making it one of my personal preferred.

Does it do anything special? Spirit warriors say that they do spirit damage and that they bypass enemy armor. So there is not any armor penetration?

Fire damage does DoT, and Cold can freeze. Nature is akin to poison, and elec drains mana/stamina. Spirit, idk.

Spirit damage tends to be unblockable. Very, very few enemies have any sort of spirit resistance, so your damage is general at full power regardless.

Armour penetration is only applied to physical damage (excluding magical physical like the Virulent Walking Bomb explosion), that is why when a Spirit Warrior converts all their physical damage to spirit damage they bypass armour penetration.
