So uh, I just tried to jump into this conversation, and being a good forum poster, tried to read the thread first... that didn't work because I haven't beat the game yet. May we please have a *spoiler* tag in title?

As an RPG AP is pretty good but nowhere near the level of ME. Your character customization options(in AP) pretty much range from you want Mike to look like a classy dousche, a lazy bum, or a bad 80's movie bad-ass. Don't get me wrong that's a bad thing(I love the the 80's bad-ass look) but beyond that you have no choice of how he looks. unlike the ME series which offers full facial customization(If not the option to change his physique, lol can you imagine an 80 pound shepard fighting a krogan?).

Saying that AP is, in part, a worse RPG than ME because of the fact you can't customize Thorton's facial features to the same degree as Shepard makes me think you're one of those nitwits who likes to dress up his character in Oblivion and then call that roleplaying. Seriously, screw that. Do you know what the best RPG in the world is? Fallout. Not Bethesda's Fallout, but the first one, by Black Isle. Your character always looked like this:

Image IPB

Now, the reason F1 was so good was because it allowed for such a wide range of roleplaying, both in how you responded to people and solved quests, but also in how you build your character. Lockpicking, First Aid, Sneaking and Repair were skills that were just as useful and viable as Small Guns and Big Guns, and picking a character who focused on any of the aforementioned lead to such a different gameplay experience that ME will look like a straight shooter in comparison. In ME, lockpicking and hacking skills were supplementary skills that could be used to solve the odd sidequest and hack containers with loot, in Fallout 1 lockpicking and hacking were skills you could use to kill the endboss, avoid most combat encounters and solve quests that were otherwise unsolvable if you were a gun toter. In other words, focus on different skills lead to different gameplay, and you could actually build your character around being a sneaky thief with lockpicking, hacking and speech skills and then play the game in accordance with this build. You could avoid combat entirely and thwart your enemies without ever firing a gun.

THIS is the core element of an RPG, being able to make a character build that makes the gameplay experience a unique one depending on your choice of skills. Not customizing your character appearance. Giving Shepard a bald head and a moustache is not roleplaying, it's larping, and it's thoroughly unimportant to how enjoyable the game is.

As far as skill customization AP is better than ME2 but ME1 is still better than both. On another note thank god they got rid of the darn Mako, now if only you could customize armor without having to worry about losing bonuses that some bring. Back on the subject of what's the better RPG, storywise ME is unparalelled. AP had an epicly awsome story line but as I said in a previous post It seems to missing huge chunks of story(i.e. Sis). Maybe they will come out with a sequel(and I really hope they do)that fills in the missing pieces, and does a major overhaul of the highly flawed controls. But as It stands, the ME series(ME2 included) is far superior as both an RPG and a TPS. Oh, and I hate the conversation timer in AP, I'd like to think for more 3 seconds about what I want to say. BUT, there is one thing in AP the is freakin awsome: Master Shadow Operative(pretty much nothin beats knifing 10 dudes in the face without any of them even knowing you were ever there).

I disagree with you on ME being better than AP storywise. I think the writing in AP is superior, and while both ME and AP are clicheed in terms of plot, AP pulls its story off much better than ME, mostly due to better characters and writing. To each his own, though.

I also disagree with you on AP missing chunks of story. You may be right about Sis being underdeveloped, but many of the story elements in AP are only missed out on if you make the wrong choices or fail to dig up dossiers on people. I ran into a lot of new things on my second playthrough of AP, things I hadn't discovered the first time. This doesn't mean that story elements are missing, but merely that playing AP differently will lead the player to being exposed to things he hadn't learned otherwise. In ME you are basically told everything regardless of what you do. This doesn't make ME better at telling a story, it merely makes it a game where the developers were probably afraid of the player becoming confused if everything didn't make sense towards the end. AP devs had the balls to actually make a game where players had to play intelligently or otherwise miss out on crucial plot elements, like when you
Spoiler
.

I agree with you on AP's controls being clunky, though. ME was much more optimised and had better TPS gameplay. I don't think many people would dispute that.

I disagree on ME series being better RPG's than AP (this statement is bull**** to any rpg afficionado). In terms of gameplay they are on equal terms (they are both shoot 'em ups despite how you build your character, and skills like lockpicking, hacking and whatnot are supplementary), but you have a lot more choices in AP, and your choices actually impact the gameplay and the general direction of the plot. Depending on how you play and the choices you make, certain endings will open up or close off (I wasn't offered to join Halbech the first time, but on my second playthrough I was and so on). In ME, the plot is always the same with minor alterations. You can destroy the galactic senate at the end and kill the Rachni Queen, but this doesn't impact the rest of the game in the slightest. AP, despite hyping it's choices and consequences to a ridiculous degree, actually has changes in dialogue, story and branching depending on the player, though not huge ones. But they're there, and they're done better than in ME.

Lastly, I agree a bit with the conversation timer sometimes being bad, especially because you don't always know what Thorton will say when you choose a response (the "proposition" reply with Surkov being a good example. you think choosing "proposition" means Thorton will ask about Surkov's proposition in terms of what he has planned, but instead Thorton makes a gay joke about not being into men and thus not liking Surkov's "proposition"). Obsidian needs to sort this out if they make a sequel.

You may be right about that, but I wasn't just talking about the Character customization for being the best RPG. I was referring to the overall game. that said, F1 was awsome, and I wasn't comparing that to Mass Effect, i was comparing AP to ME. Also, the choices you make in ME1 do effect the gameplay in ME2, and will in ME3 as well. They do affect mainly side story stuff though, which does suck. Also I'll take your word for it on the details in AP getting filled in on other playthroughs, because I traded it in @ Gamestop within 3 days of it's release because the controls just didn't make worth the effort to me to go through again, no matter how much i loved the story, which 4 the record I did love it.

I think that the best feature about Alpha Protocol is the influence you have on your storyline. It seems like every time I play through it there is something new I discover.

Like the final boss fight?

I seriously loved my ending for AP, then I traded it in to get GD:RB

Is F1+2 really that good? I saw a trilogy pack for PC thought I might get it :wizard:

I
know. I go a bit overboard with my posts occassionally, but you seemed
to put a lot of wieght on character cutsomization in terms of how
enjoyable you found AP, and it sounded a bit like you thought ME1 was
honestly a better RPG than AP due to the fact you could change
Shepard's facial features, which I needless to say disagree with.

I think they are very good. I'm part of a minority who considers F1 better than F2, but both are definitely worthwhile. F2 is good merely for scope and a huge gameworld that gives a lot of freedom. F1 has the better writing, plot and setting.

I'm interested in the game, but I hear that you can only be male and that you're supposed to seduce women. Is it worth it for a female gamer to buy? Looking for opinions on that from both men and women who have played it.

You can only play male, yes. But you're not "supposed to" seduce anyone. Whether you want to do that is entirely up to you.

I honestly don't see why being a female gamer would somehow be a detriment to you enjoying AP. I'm sure you're able to enjoy many other games where you don't get to pick your own main character.

I played Alpha Protocol. I loved Alpha Protocol. I loved it so much I played it again. I still loved it, so I started another playthrough. Now at this point my copy of Fallout 3 comes in, and I install and play it (I am not impressed) and now my Alpha Protocol doesn't love me anymore.

So Alpha Protocol is broken, and Fallout 3 works and has lots of side quests and cities I never found. What do I do? I spend two hours trying (with no expectation of success) to fix Alpha Protocol, only to be told by Sega customer service that I am suffering from a rare bug that they're trying to track down.

I'm re-installing Fallout 1. I think my actions speak for themselves.

I suppose what I'm asking is this:  is it a cheesecake fest intended for the male viewer, or does it stand alone as a good game on its own merits.  I don't mind playing a guy if the game is good- like, for example, The Witcher.  Geralt could seduce people if he wanted, but you could also ignore that aspect of the game if you wanted to do so without missing much.  My concern was when I read that seducing women would help you in AP, and I didn't want to have to do it.  If that's not the case, I will probably buy.  Thanks.Image IPB

Seducing women in AP... There are four possible people you can sleep with. Three are completely optional, and the fourth your character isn't in a position to say 'no'. There's no mechanical benefit to it at all (though the last case putting yourself in the situation that leads up to it is the only way to get the particular bonus she offers, it's a temporary bonus and isn't that great even if it's useful to you).

You get a small bonus to your regenerating HP pool for each person you sleep with, but towards the end of the game if you haven't slept with anyone you get a big bonus too. Only one of the four people you can sleep with can be slept with before the end game sequence starts, and depending on what order you do the hubs in you could have the bonus for just one mission before the end sequence starts (or for two full hubs).

Who was your handler for the start of the endgame?

Actually, don't answer that, because I know it wasn't the person who does it, and there are several girls you know who you can encounter in the endgame.

This game just reinforced my belief that the review sites are loads of garbage. I quite enjoyed this game, and yet apparently its graphics are archaic? It looks like MW2 minus all the shininess.

See I think that's pushing it.  The graphics aren definately on the low end of things, and I remember my first reaction to the game being pretty damn negative because of the ugliness.  But as you go on you see that it's not an issue at all.  Yeah the graphics are weak, but they do a good job of covering that up.

I agree though, I lost alot of respect for alot of reviewers.  I feel like they played an hour, maybe two, and decided to write a review for it.  I also feel like they were expecting a wildly differenty game.  I tell all my friends "Alpha Protocol is a game you probably won't like unless you're really into RPGs."

There are plenty of gameplay videos on YouTube and plenty of screenshots on review sites.

Though to be honest if graphics along the lines of the first Mass Effect could turn you off to a game, Alpha Protocol isn't for you.

I personally don't think many female gamers would enjoy it much. But you don't have to seduce anyone(there's actually an achievement on the 360 for not doing it).

I'm jumping in here to say that the game ran fine, contrary to what some reviewers had said (I thought I was gonna be jumping into ME 1 all over again, this was not the case).

However the gameplay was a little shakey. Sometimes good sometimes a pain in the ass. The game itself seemed like it was stuck between last gen gameplay mechanics and next gen gameplay mechanics (with current gen graphics!). Excellent character interaction system, and divergent threads! But some things are just kind of ehhh even when fully leveled up.

However

It is nearly ruined by the second to last boss fight :|

Yes I figured out how to take him down but that was the stupidest ****ing thing I have ever seen. Ever.

Now excuse me while I jump into a pool FILLED WITH GRENADES.

On the whole, I enjoyed it. You play as a man, but the game doesn't force you to seduce anyone. It's a fun adventure, rather like the Thief series, but with more explosions, dialogue and plot outcomes. The writing side of things is somewhat uneven: the cartoonish aspects (e.g. SIE, Brayko) don't seem perfectly integrated with the more serious material (e.g. Shaheed, Halbech) perhaps because Obsidian tried as usual to do too much with too little - too little time, money, game-hours...or else because the various designers and writers involved in the project were pulling in different directions. Nevertheless, the writing is still better than anything you'll find in 95% of video-games.

The dialogue options give you some control over the male player character's personality, so for the large majority of the time you aren't forced to play as a knuckle-dragger. For my money, Thornton is less irritating than Geralt. No swishy white hair, fewer monologues.  If you're interested in playing an RPG that tries to do new things in the fields of plotting and player-responsive characterisation and dialogue, get it.

eta: AP also includes non-lethal take-downs and an 'orphan tally' - game characters notice how brutally your character behaves, and they react to that. It's a game that's unlikely to appeal to the FPS's core fanbase. In fact, it's a game that tries to be thoughtful.

Also, I played on the 360 so I do not know if some reviewers (looking at Joystiq, and Destructoid) played on the PC version. But Alpha Protocol was surprisingly stable. Sure it had some bugs but not even close to the level on from reading reviews what I was lead to believe.

While I still think the combat engine tries to do a bit too much (to its detriment). I still think it was a very good game that could have very nearly been great.

Also the writing and the characters blows Bioware's standard out of the water.

Probably due to the conversation system where it seems like you are directing a conversation while, in lets say Mass Effect you more or less are fishing for information, fishing for more information and oops sex. Alpha Protocol's characters felt a lot more interesting (even when they were "normal" characters) than I could say of the characters in the Bioware games I have played.

The reviewers blew the bugs hugely out of proportion. It's slightly buggier than Mass Effect 2.

I totally agree with you about the writing too. The one-word conversation options in AP suffer in the same way Mass Effect's dialogue wheel does – your character's action not always being apparent – but that's the price you pay; I'm sure they can work it out for the most past.
