Yeah I was very surprised when I saw how relatively bug free it was. I was expected to have major problems but there wasn't anything that hindered my experience. Really only some gameplay balance issues but that was about it and that has nothing to do with game stability.

The reviewers blew the bugs hugely out of proportion. It's slightly buggier than Mass Effect 2.
I totally agree with you about the writing too. The one-word conversation options in AP suffer in the same way Mass Effect's dialogue wheel does – your character's action not always being apparent – but that's the price you pay; I'm sure they can work it out for the most past.

I like the time limit, quick stuff, but it was worse than ME2 in the whole "I select one thing and he says something totally different." aspect.

Yeah while the conversations felt like actual conversations, I really had no idea what Thorton was going to say. Hell, everytime I tried pissing people off they ended up liking me.

I preferred the dialogue system in Mass Effect as I think it better represents what we think when actually conversing with people. At least when I form dialogue in my head, I sum of a basic though that can be spelled out in a few words and then I elaborate it into a more complete, worded expression. I don't simplify my personal dialogue choices with suave, professional, aggressive classifications.

Nevertheless, I enjoyed the dialogue system in Alpha Protocol despite my preference for Mass Effect's. The timing kept you on your feet and learning the personalities of other characters through conversation was a fun experiment.

Destructoid was my hero when they gave Final Fantasy XIII a 4/10 but I have to disagree with their review of Alpha Protocol. I'd give it an 8/10.

Yeah, sorry Ghost Lightning.  As a diehard fan of the old school Final Fantasy games, Final Fantasy XIII can die a watery death.

Well, to each his own. I personally think it's the best thing to come out this year besides ME2....any way, I didn't like Alpha Protocol that much, I played it once and haven't touched it since.

That's okay, I'd probably dislike Final Fantasy 13.

All I know is that FFXIII is either my favorite or second favorite game. (KoTOR is very hard to forget). Now, can we get back to talking about the mediocrity that is Alpha protocol.

Thanks for the info on the game. I asked and you talked. I'll be picking it up the next time I'm out.

I picked it up today, seems alright atm. I do have a qualm with my being able to 'befriend' Mina waayyyyy too quickly to seem realistic. Also, I would like to know, is character development and interaction with Thorton realistic? or is it like, you're professional colleagues one minute and dying for each other, per se, the next?

Your question is very difficult to answer because it's very difficult to understand... You've got to realize that anyone who Thorton can get to extreme highs/lows on the reputation meter with has already studied his dossier extensively, and so feels a sense of familiarity there. And even then, the extreme ends of the reputation meter don't have so huge an impact on their interaction with Mike as you might think. Everybody you meet is a professional, and there are no unrealistic mood swings like you seem to fear.

Fun piece of homework though: play through the first hub twice, once with Darcy liking you and the other with him hating you. I believe you'll even get a "we don't need to like each other, we just need to get the job done" during the briefing if he doesn't like you.

The former. The romances are handled well and realistically, I feel. And they really take up a pretty small space overall.

Except with Mina maybe, as Thorton's relationship with her is one that evolves all the way through the game.

Like actually come with you and you can customize, zero

Like contacts and handlers, I believe like 10 (counting the optional Handler switch at the end of the game)

SPOILER WARNING

How do you fight Westridge at the end of the game I keep getting Leland

For handlers Mina is your handler almost all of the time. There are two handlers you'll have in the first hub, a mission where you have the choice of two handlers, a mission where you can choose between Mina and one or two other handlers, and then the final mission has at most three non-Mina handlers you can choose from, and a fourth you can pick up during the mission. All in all there are eight potential handlers. Of those, one is mandatory for one mission, one is optional for one mission, one is mandatory for two missions, one is optional for one mission and the ending, one is optional for two missions and the ending, and two are ending only. Mina is there pretty much all the time otherwise. Twenty missions (not counting talking only missions) and she's the only handler for fourteen of them.

SPOILER: The time I fought Westridge was the time I messed up enough of Halbech's plans to turn Parker to my side, though I'm not sure if they're related. Shaheed, Deng, and Surkov were all on my side. And of course if you side with Leland you fight Westridge.

Understandable, I pissed off everyone at AP and ended up fighting Leland, but the ending had great closure, he was the only Bad Guy I actually did not spare

Deng liked me by the end of the game and the twist at the end of Taiwan was awesome

It really sucks that a part of the game is based on Taiwan and the game isn't imported to Taiwan. Even Steam blocks Taiwan users. Duh!

I've been playing the game for a couple of weeks (on and off), and I have to say overall I like it.

What was disturbing that I couldn't rent it first because the only video stores with game rentals still existing in my county are blockbusters, and Blockbuster for some reason doesn't have the game for rental. So I had no choice but to buy it. I don't get the objections about the price. Its a pretty good price ($35 in my area). Overall I think its worth the price. I have completed the Middle East, Moscow, and Taipei chapters and I'm on to Rome, so I'll see soon enough what happens there.

The only complaints I have:
-The way saves work is horrible. First off only 1 particular character build per storage device sucks, so I'm gonna need my memory card for another so I don't overwrite both characters. Then when playing the game, checkpoints are the only things saved (the only exception being in the safehouse between missions where you can do things like buy stuff and send emails and save after). I hate that because I'm more of a compulsive saver and I don't usually go into a game without knowing what I want to do, and I like reloading a save right before an important convo in case I mess up.
-I have issues with the conversation system. While I like the basic setup of this new system, oftentimes the dialogue choices are way too misleading and you can end up saying/doing the opposite of what you meant. Obsidian said that as a guideline for the convos you can be like James Bond, Jason Bourne, or Jack Bauer. So far, I don't detect ANY of the three agents in Michael Thornton's responses, and I assume you can blame the script and the voice actor.
-Somewhat related to the conversation system: Some characters are just... I don't know... nonsensical. SIE is an example of this. To win favor with her you have to treat her like crap in dialogues and overall so no interest, even going as far as to show disgust, to get her to pursue you. This is not at all how a cougar works. True they like the hunt, the pursuit, but if they're met with absolute contempt they'll move on. I think this was Obsidian's attempt to simulate attraction through developing a repor of aggression and sexual chemistry through stronger-male-influence-on-strong-woman, but with SIE I don't see that at all. Mina and Scarlet are much stronger women in my opinion because they demonstrate an abundance of self-respect. SIE, while based on what you can find in her dossier seems like a no-nonsense woman who's moved on from childish games, acts just like one of those high-school girls who obsesses over the guy who treats her like crap. I've stopped pursuing her after Moscow and I'm on to Mina and Scarlet. I think the next game I play I'll romance SIE for the achievement only.

Those are the major complaints that I can't really get over. Everything else that people have complained about, I can see but are negligible to me. I'll finish my current playthrough as a Recruit and then replay as a Freelancer, and afterwards trade the game in for a bit of store credit with a game store.
