Definately a very unpolished game. I don't even want to continue playing until they patch it.

Sounds like Obsidian to me.

I'll be buying it. Destructoid is a good review source but they tend to occasionally exaggerate. The amount of passion the reviewer showed in his Alpha Protocol review leads me to believe he got really frustrated at just one or two low points and used it to lambast the entire game while ignoring most of the positives.

I'll buy it confident knowing it will be patched soon enough.

This has got to be the first time I've ever seen a gamespot review posted before IGN's review.

I always check Gamespot before other sites ... I discovered it at 2001 :) and I believe in this site !
Holy **** 6 ?!  :(

I thought the Destructoid review was too harsh. My first impression after reading it was that this guy was being critical of the wrong things.

He knocks close quarters combat for being a simplistic one button mash affair. Okay, that almost describes Bloodlines to a tee. One button combined with directions to change up combat. He knocks lockpicking and hacking because it's apparently not as easy as every other such minigame I've played. He writes of bullets missing when the target is locked on for a clean shot. Again, that reminds me of Bloodlines.

It sounds like the reviewer missed that Alpha Protocol is driven as much by RPG mechanics as action elements. It isn't meant to be Metal Gear Solid or Splinter Cell. The only legitimate criticisms I saw were AI issues, texture glitches, and issues with cover. The rest made me think, "okay, so how is this different from other action RPGs I played exactly?"

Maybe Alpha Protocol is still a mess, but I'm going to wait for an RPG focused site such as Gamebanshee to review it. Failing that, I'll wait to see what others here think about it.

It really seems to be a "love it" or "hate it" affair. Still, Gamespot's review seems to have several legitimate complaints, backed up by gameplay footage (watch the video review).

I can't go to Gamespot. I boycotted their site after Gerstmanngate. I'm not stating Alpha Protocol is being unfairly criticized by every reviewer. Just Destructoid. I need a known RPG fan to do a critical review before I'm convinced. One thing is certain: I'm not buying Alpha Protocol sight unseen. Obsidian is out of free chances with me, despite my love of their games so far. Cash is too tight for me to take gambles on unknown software.

I'm boycotting this game for coming out in Europe before the USA. How dare Obsidian make us wait 3 days longer just because we live on a different continent.

The same thing happened with Mask of the Betrayer. Those were good times. I still remember every US community member at the NWN2 forums frantically begging for tidbits from our European brethren. I among them. :)

Kevin van Ord is the only reviewer I trust (on Gamespot, anyway).

Do any of these sites have overviews of what type of games each reviewer likes? I'm staying away since I don't want anything spoiled but at the same time it would be nice to know if the person who gave it a really bad review actually likes or understand what type of game it is. I have seen sites gives RPG's to reviewers who only played shooters in the past.

The reviews on gamespot and destructoid are spoiler free. The trailers for the game though do have spoilers, some of them major.

I posted a huge rant on Obsidian's forums about it and one of the developers responded sounding almost apologetic and assuring me that the spoiler is actually very minor and was just revealed to get people interested in the game.

I'm still furious, but we'll see.

After watching this entire video I have one question, virumor: do you mean how badly they play? Because I can't blame everything on mechanics. This was clumsier than when I saw a Giantbomb video of the Tower of Ishal prior to Dragon Age's release. XD

My sole complaint based on this video is that the hacking game looks too easy while lock picking is too clunky. The rest didn't bother me. Not the graphics, stats, or combat. It certainly seems flawed, but all that kept running through my mind while watching this guy play was Bloodlines. Even down to the clumsy sneaking and running animations. They were different in Bloodlines, of course, but still goofy in appearance. I'm almost sold on this game. All I need know is a detailed, spoiler free review from someone who's completed it.

The combination of deadpan comments, unfortunate gameplay mishaps and sometimes quirky AI.

Yeah the voice acting wasn't stellar but it didn't scare me away either. The AI was less than stellar too. That didn't bother me a great deal. From some of these reviews I was expecting an unplayable mess. Maybe it's that I play RPGs almost exclusively these days or that my standards are lower than most, but I felt better after watching that video, not worse.

I've played some missions (finished the first main story hub); as primary skills I chose Stealth, Pistols & Hand-to-hand. I haven't run into any bugs or glitches yet - frankly, as with Dragon Age, I think the consoles get the bulk of those.

As for gameplay, it isn't as bad as written in some reviews. I suppose the clunkiness would become apparent if one chooses to rambo through everything, but I'm trying to take the stealthy route as much as possible... there are some really cheesy skills that allow one to become literally invisible for a few seconds, and another one that allows to freeze time for 15 seconds and queue up 5 headshots (basically VATS from Fallout 3).

So it seems that contrary to some reviews, stealth + pistols is not weak at all, but gamebreakingly powerful.

Only real gripe I have is that the hacking minigame is incredibly frustrating, due to a mouse control that is all over the place.

As for characters, the main protagonist is very bland and boring imo... and not very well voiced either (in the same league as Mass Effect's Mark Meer). Other (major) characters, though, are adequately voiced. On story I will obviously not comment... what I can say though is that the game reeks a lot of the TV-show "La femme Nikita".

Innnteresting. I'm not sure how I'd feel about that. My mom is a huge fan of that show, or was? She didn't catch it when it originally aired, but she did buy the entire series on DVD at a super cheap clearance price. I've seen the movie it was based on; not the series. It looked too cheesy. She's told me virtually everything about it though, whether I was asking to know or not. :pinched:

Now that I think about that show's plot and its organization, I'm getting uncomfortable vibes. I'll be disappointed Alpha Protocol mimics the plot too closely.

The more I see, the more I'm convinced that I should wait until it drops in price and/or they patch it up a bit. It doesn't look bad, just a bit too mediocre for a full price purchase, IMO.

I'm sure Fallout New Vegas will be fine. I don't see Bethesda allowing Obsidian to sully the brand they worked so hard to make.

As expected. Might have gone out of my way to get the game in a trade if it actually turned out to be good, but I didn't expect it to perform admirably from the start. Guess I'll wait a month or two, three to pick it up for for 10-20 bucks.

I think one of the perk of Alpha Protocol that is better than Bioware games is that negetive approval from some people actually have benefits, which means you don't have to be everybody's best friend like in Dragon Age. Sweet talking Morrigan and also gaining Wynne's approval always felt abit two-face for me.

Picked it up today (X360), played through a few of the Saudi missions as a straight up soldier with SMGs and Assault Rifles.

Cover system is alright, but feels kind of rough - you can't always cover behind what you think you can, or move as far left/right along it as you expect. You have GoW-style moves where you can SWAT turn and roll out from cover, as well as cover slip into another position ahead of you.

Enemies as of yet aren't exceptionally intelligent, and tend to stand or kneel in place waiting if they're aware of you, more often than fire from or seek cover. Most of them carry at least one grenade and if you're in cover, it can be difficult to pull away and get some distance if you see them throw one or the indicator appears.

Shooting is reminiscent of ME1, though it's hard to be precise because of how the look movement starts at a slow speed, then increases to maximum the longer you hold in one direction, so you often end up correcting left and right trying to line up a shot because the reticule swings past your target.

'Stealth' is basically just crouching and trying to sneak up on enemies when they're not looking at you for a one-hit melee kill. If you're wearing armor though, you often get seen by another enemy or the guy you're marking will turn around before you get into range. At short range, enemies can be kind of awkward, as they move forward to melee, then backpedal out of range firing, then come back in again.

The minigames are kind of annoying. The circuit matching is kind of easy, the lockpicking is quite tough on the 360 (apply pressure with the left trigger, set the piece with the right trigger) and the hacking game is a matter of luck (in that you hope to be looking in the right general area for the code and that you can get the slow-moving code block there in time). If you mess it up or abort, you set off the alarm, so I found it easier to kill everything in the area before trying to lockpick or hack.

The conversation system doesn't really give you time to think about what you're saying, you tend to react on instinct rather than consider your options. It's interesting. The voice acting is fine in my opinion, nothing standout as of yet, but everything is serviceable.

At the moment though, it doesn't quite match up to its price tag, so unless I find it getting better over a Sunday's gaming, I'll probably take it back Monday and trade it in for Bayonetta or something. Recommend renting it out (if you have a 360) first for anyone undecided, because it's one of those games that you either get a feel for or get sick of within the first few days, in my opinion.
