If you're a story nut, then this is a game for you, many outcomes, a lot of characters with dossiers you can find. Also this game has a lot of choices and some are hard (better then ME even, can't believe I just said that).

But, there's a but (twice already LOL) gameplay is clunky, graphics are from let's say 2007/2008ish and animations are way worse then ME1.

I gotta hand it to the AI though... enemies actually throw grenades to flush you out so you can't spend all day hiding behind
a brick popping heads... imagine that.

The reviews I have read have stressed nothing but bugs and poor game play, and for a game that was delayed 8 or so months, that is unacceptable.

These reviews lie. I've had more technical problems with ME2 & DA:O than this game.

From what I've read in certain reviews, reviewers were complaining they weren't hitting things with their weapons... seemingly forgetting they were playing a RPG and not ME2 or Gears of War.

I'd advise to read some more reviews from specialized sites like RPGamer before condemning the game undeservedly.

Most people who've played the game say it the ****. (Then again they are all on the Obsidian forums and may be a little biased.)

Alpha-Protocol has some anti-russian themes in it (meaning I likely wouldn't like it)... that gets boring after a while.

I might have to pick this up. I'm really skeptical about the game and I just started playing Ever Quest 2 again. Bringing my month of WoW to it's final end and make me realize why I left four years ago.

It might be good to still get involved in solid Single Player Game.

Um what?  I have played through the entire game and the only thing that comes close to it being anti-Russian is the mafia.  If anything, its more anti-American than anything else (which might be the cause of why so many American reviewers hate it so...).

EDIT:  Just thought I'd better make this clearer to avoid confusion, I'm not saying AP is a anti-american game, but it doesn't hold back from some characters pointing the finger so to speak.  If you like your games to have your government sugar-coated as heroic good guys out to fight the evil enemies of democracy and freedom, then you might be put off with some of the things in AP.

I have this gamig coming tomorrow, and I will likely not open it and return it. I love a great story, but a great story alone cannot hold me over, the game play has to be there as well. The reviews I have read have stressed nothing but bugs and poor game play, and for a game that was delayed 8 or so months, that is unacceptable. The game really seems like a rental to me, or a game I would try out at a greatly discounted price. I am sure I will get around to it some day, but for now...I am going to return it, and grab Red Dead Redemption as I keep hearing nothing but amazing things about it, from both reviews, friends and fellow forum posters.

I still haven't found a bug in many hours of play...

I can verify this comment myself. Everything of it. Btw, I'm not Russian nor American.

I don't know how long it is because I still haven't finished it. I'm playing a stealthy character, so I imagine that's longer than a Rambo. Some people claim to have finished it in 12 hours, I've been playing it for 20 and still have a way to go. I imagine it's comparable to Mass Effect games but I can't know for sure.

It's as linear as Bioware games. The start is linear and later you must finish some missions but you choose the order of those missions.

Just finished AP. Found it so-so. I got a good couple of days play out of it, so it wasn't a waste of money, but I doubt I'll be revisiting it anytime soon. The main plot was like Deus Ex, the tone was Deus Ex meets Deus Ex 2 (unfortunately). Pretty cookie-cutter spy thriller stuff - more Roger Moore's James Bond than Le Carre. Obsidian certainly crammed in the choices and characters, so it was a success in that sense, but nevertheless - they were crammed in. And I can't appreciate characters and choices when they're presented in that way. I just don't have a stake in them and don't find my interest engaged. Games do sometimes get it right: NWN2 introduced its chief victim near the beginning and made sure she was involved until the plot hammer descended two-thirds of the way through. More pertinently, Deus Ex gave JC Denton three very substantial missions with returns to base and conversations with the lead characters before throwing a spanner in the works. In contrast, Thornton has been at Greybox for all of ten minutes, as Mina herself points out, when he gets whisked away a la Deus Ex.

I also wasn't impressed by the modern day setting, simply because Obsidian didn't exploit it enough to justify its use. The locations were just the scenery for a spy thriller. An Asian temple here, a Renaissance pediment there, and, of course, a load of NPCs who talk to each other in heavily accented English. It would be easier to forgive the genericness of AP if Obsidian weren't conjuring up all these genuinely interesting places only to use them as window dressing for the annoyingly chirpy hero, the vamps and the megalomaniacs that make up their cast.

One more thing: I think I've had enough of codices and dossiers. No more, please. It's great that the writers have that information to draw on, and I know it saves on exposition, but what the player needs to know about the factions and characters should be in the game itself, not in the accompanying encyclopaedia. It's like going to a concert where the conductor interrupts the orchestra to read out a commentary on the score, and when he starts the music again he's lost his place and thinks he's twelve bars further on than he was.

And I'm being grouchy, I know. So I'd best mention something that AP managed perfectly: TRAINS! The trains in Alpha Protocol are fantastic. They look like real trains, they move like real trains, they sound - man, do they - they sound like real trains! Chugga-chugga-chugga-chugga-WHOOSH!

eta: I only encountered one bad bug (Thornton once froze in position after manning a turret), so comparisons to V:TM:B seem hasty.

Overall, I'd give AP 7/10

That is exacly what I hoped for about 20+ hours (I can't rush a game quick enough), with a diverse semi, but not heavily linear structure =]

Now to continue my aggressive stealthiness :devil:

It took me 31 hours to finish it. Using stealth, Martial Arts and Pistol as my specialized skills and rifle as my secondary weapon but only invested 1 point in it  :P

It pleases me to hear this, actually.  One of my earlier fears had been that Obsidian had resorted to banal, jingoistic Tom Clancy-style claptrap in their storytelling.  I was hoping this wouldn't be the case, but I was still a little worried.  I mean, I studied International Relations in university, and I'm pretty big on following current events, so I certainly enjoy a good political thriller-type story, but most videogames still just do a horrible job at this sort of thing.  I figured that Obsidian could handle it better than most, though.

Also: thanks for the review, Colenda.  A lot of reviews I've seen have focused more on gameplay flaws than the story, setting, and characters, so it's interesting to hear a critical perspective on those as well.

Its simple people, If you want an RPG, with Action RPG style combat (ME1), you'll love AP.

If you want an third person action shooter with RPG elements (ME2) you'll hate this game.

The story is good, the writing is better yet, the choices and consequences are amazing on the level of Vampire Bloodlines.

The dialogue system is better than ME, its almost on par with Fallout 2 and Bloodlines.

As lukandroll says, it depends on the kind of game you like. But I think my general advice would be to wait a couple of months,  until a few dollars/pounds/karbovanets/whatevers have been shaved off the price - and that way, a patch may have been be released before you play it.

Thank you.

Curious. I consider AP to have the best dialogue system I've ever seen. But I consider ME system better than Fallout 2 and Bloodlines:lol:.

Just got it on PC, so far I am enjoying it quite a bit, did a good job on the characters so far. Haven't found any glitches but the controls take a moment to adjust to after playing ME for so long.

I'm gonna take my time and enjoy this one.

This was my reasons for getting the game and your post summarizes it perfectly (I mean the first thing I thought of when I saw the AP system was cool ME1 stuff)

The dialogue system is fun to mess with now I need to figure out how high approval I need to start a romance

Level cap?

Just playing through the tutorial right now, and so far so good.

Right in the beginning, when Thorton wakes up in an unknown medical facility and a woman comes on the intercom, I half expected it to be Miranda telling me to pick up the pistol. lol

Not sure what the requirements are to start a romance, think they may actually be different per character, but have no idea.  The level cap when I played through it first time as a recruit was 20, dunno if it changes after completing it once.
