Its simple people, If you want an RPG, with Action RPG style combat (ME1), you'll love AP.
If you want an third person action shooter with RPG elements (ME2) you'll hate this game.

The story is good, the writing is better yet, the choices and consequences are amazing on the level of Vampire Bloodlines.
The dialogue system is better than ME, its almost on par with Fallout 2 and Bloodlines.

This was my reasons for getting the game and your post summarizes it perfectly (I mean the first thing I thought of when I saw the AP system was cool ME1 stuff)

The dialogue system is fun to mess with now I need to figure out how high approval I need to start a romance

Level cap?

Not sure what the requirements are to start a romance, think they may actually be different per character, but have no idea.  The level cap when I played through it first time as a recruit was 20, dunno if it changes after completing it once.

I'll assume 20 for now then until further invesigation

I think its 20 yes. (Old school :))
As for the romance I don't want to spoil anything to anyone, because its one of the better aspects of the game, I'll just say that there is not a general way to approach the romance, sometimes when the NPC is flirting with you, a Suave response will work, and with another NPC it wont, its all about of reading the person and guess what he/she may like or won't.

PD: I totally forgot that the release date for the US was today.

I have to admit, that is low. Posting an update based off of an unverifiable comment? I thought the Escapist was better than that. At least they pay lip service to the possibility it might not be an Obsidian employee despite the entire article being based on the premise it must be.

I wasn't trying to demean Alpha Protocol or anything, but I thought it was an interesting read. I meant know offense. I like Obsidian. I'm sorry.

In my opinion the game should have been a little more like Mass Effect 2 with the crosshairs. The game had major issues when telling you if you hit a target or not with a gun. It also was very buggy and had some hiccups. The animations were a bit stiff and the way the character sneaks is unrealistic. If they should make a sequel they should listen to the feedback the reviews had for the game and try to improve these things. The only thing that was really good was the voice acting and the amount of weapons you could customize with.

Woah. I was totally misunderstood there. That entire post was directed at The Escapist, not you Capt. Obvious. If you have genuine issues with Alpha Protocol, feel free to voice them. Unless you don't... then er... don't? Everyone is entitled to their opinion, whether or not I agree with it, and you didn't do anything to offend me whatsoever. ;)

I was miffed at the website for indulging in what I felt was sloppy journalism.

Well I've played a little farther into Alpha protocol and frankly I haven't found any real problems, game has been stable. No game breaking glitches, AI is a little hit and miss in some areas but overall it's decent(I stealth killed one guy and there was a guy who just walked right by and didn't notice and on another occasion a guard saw me despite a wall between us but that has only happened once and on a reload so may just have been a failed character reset).

The conversation system is rather enjoyable and a little deeper than most since you can read up on each person to learn how they think and alter how you approach them.

The perk system is interesting though I haven't payed much attention to it so far but they blend in well so you don't have to focus on them.

Overall I'm currently having fun and have not had any issues that I've been reading about. Only some minor issues with mouse sensitivity but I've been slowly dialing that in.

This game is officially awesome. It has a skill system similar to Deus Ex's and the conversation system is perhaps the best I have ever seen. Loving this game.

It's good to see some positive feedback here about the game. I was hoping it would be good. I am still going to return my copy to pick up Red Dead Redemption, but I will get to Alpha Protocol at some point. It will most likely get a price drop in a few months, which will make my purchase more valid for me.

I think if you have a console pad it supposedly controls better, though I have been able to play with only a few niggles with the keyboard and mouse (mouse is probably better for the lockpicking I think, but for the hacking you'll probably have problems since one of the thumbsticks is tied to the mouse so you are trying to move something while simultaneously moving the cursor at the same time, led to me accidentally clicking abort a few times).  The reviews for the PC seem to be more favourable, but that could be due to the difference in demographic, or because there are more reviews for the consoles.

Just got AP yesterday, and completed so far the Saudi missions, and continued with Rome.

Took me a bit, but im starting to really like the game.

Yes, there are flaws - like the minigames, lockpicking is far to easy, bypassing is okay, but hacking is godawful horrible trash. The game looks decent, however it lacks (so far) any 'cinematic' feel in it's cutscenes, and the animations are very wooden. The save system with it's check points feels very restrictive, and feels dated, a step back. Either go far back to correct a mistake or outcome you don't happen to like, or live with it.

On the upside, characters and voices are good, and I happen to like the dialogue system a lot. I need to play it longer, but so far I'm even tempted to say it's the best dialogue system I've seen so far.

Besides getting stuck after leaving a machine gun turret I've seen no bug or glitch so far.

For those still in doubt, give it a try I'd say, it's a quite refreshing take at a modern RPG.

I only played for a little while last night and did all the training missions and such. It really felt like Deus Ex to me. Seems good so far.

Hacking on console is a bit to easy (just basically oh go find the code in all these numbers we give you to much time anyway) just lockpicking is hard (which I like the system it grew on me)

Agreed a great take at a modern RPG and more importantly the dialogue system is a step in the right direction for future RPGs being very fluid and interesting (the approval system is pretty good to)

Stealth-Sabatoge-Martial Arts has to be one of the most assassin like builds avoid tech, detect enemies, and beat them to death :D

On PC it's the other way around:?

I picked up the game. I didn't notice it had a 6 on Ign and other sites.

I haven't had much problems with the game so far. Characters seem underdeveloped. I'm only 9 hours in though.

I know it is weird, but then again being trigger happy definitely makes lockpicking hard

So I broke down and got the game.  Beat it too.  Great game.

It's not nearly as bad as the reviews made it sound, and aside from the camera my biggest complaint is the lack of a Sis romance.  Wtf is that about?

Edit:  Oh and the heavy handed anti-Americanism got old at the end.  It was fine sprinkled throughout the game, but they really laid it on thick there at the end.

Definitely needs moar Sis, not necessarily a romance until we find out her age, but they just can't put a badass like that in, hint at a big overall plot for her, and then leave it unresolved.  Moar please!

I noticed a little bugginess with my first Saudi mission (bug the airfield). I was detected, so I decided to restart the level. From the moment they drop me into the level I have a guard shooting me. Kind of makes it hard to sneak in! Then all the other guards through the first checkpoint had simply vanished. I finally gave up on being sneaky for this mission even though the writeup was to sneak in undetected. I still had a good time. I just had to change my playstyle. The next was much easier and I was able to sneak around and kill the guys undetected.

So, finaly fishined the game.

I stand by my initial impression, the game grew on my the longer I played it. No idea why it got so mixed reviews, story and plot are good, quite a lot of surprising twists in it. While there are some meh characters (like SIE), most are quite interesting. Dialogue system is great, approval gain (and loss) feels more natural compared to BioWare games, mission variety is also good, and there are some hard choices to make. However, with around 20 hours it took me, it's definitely a bit short.

The skills don't feel that balanced, I played a sneaky stealth/sabotage/pistols character - activate Shadow Operative, sneak in font of the boss, activate Chain Shot, dead boss. Regardless, since the action mechanics feel a bit clunky sometimes, this sneaky approach was fun and worked very well.

It's no milestone for gaming, then again, how many story driven games with RPG mechanics are out there?

Now that I think about it...the characters really didn't get the focus they deserved, with the exception of Mina, Leland, and Scarlett.

Oh and I guess Heck.  Probably the best character right there imo.  Chaotic Crazy = Awesome.

Also:  Sis looks around 18 - 20 to me.  Thorton is what?  Late 20s by the look of him?  Early 30s at latest.  -Weirder things happen-.  Plus she's really cute so you know...whatever.  It's a video game.  Make her 20, who cares?

The ending was a bit of a pain in the ass.  The last level felt hectic in a way the others didn't, but maybe that was just because it was 8AM and I had stayed up all night.  The scarlett decision didn't make any damn sense in that I just thought she was going to help me.  In a different way, but who knows.  Contemplating trying that last mission again, although I have a thing about redoing endings.  Feels...wrong.  Make your decisions and stick with em.

But it just a game.

It feels like Sis is a victim of cutting plot content from the game. Pity, really. Game is overall very short.

Not really since you only see more of certain people if you choose certain paths which is kinda stupid
There's many great characters introduced but they aren't much developed and you don't see most of them beyond a few scenes

How is that stupid? That's, precisely, the consequences of having choices.
