While everyone has their good points, I think the one I'd be most likely to follow would be Duncan. If you narrow it down to party members you can have through the whole game I'd follow Sten or Leliana, not for any of their personal qualities, but simply because they're going places and seeing things.

Wynne for sure.

Completely agree for Zevran he would be my first pick.Rivie wrote...
Alistair or Wynne. Ali because he's the sort who would get the job done. The brash, plucky sort usually does have the good ideas. Wynne because her calm, collected logic would be a great benefit when planning battle strategies.
I'm a Zevran fangirl but I can't help but think that Zev's plans wouldn't be the sort I'd really like to follow. Unless they involve things not mentionable on the forums. Then my PC would gladly follow said plans to whatever conclusion they may have.
Other than that, certainly Morrigan, as I find her fascinating, and she could teach me magic without all these chantry crazy templars around.

If we are talking about ally/companion and not understudy. I would say Alistair. He seems the most agreeable personality wise to me.
And he doesn't seem like he would be preachy or gloomy about anything in any extreme manner.

Alistair because he's awesome and would surely be up for doing something silly!

I can't really choose between Alistair, Wynne, and Morrigan. Alistair seems like the sort of guy you can count on to make snarky comments in the thick of battle, and he seems like he'd watch out for you in a fight. Sten and Duncan seem too...serious...for me.
On the other hand, I prefer playing magic-based classes and Wynne would make a great teacher. She seems like she'd be able to keep a cool head in a fight.
And Morrigan. Well, Morrigan's just awesome, but I don't know if she could tolerate someone like me following her around. It would be nice to train with someone who wasn't beholden to the Chantry and the Circle.

Jory.
He seems like he's going places, isn't he?

A lot of the companions don't come accross as leaders at all. I think Wynne would be the best of the joinables. She has turned down leadership in the past but sometimes the reluctant leaders are the best. Sten at least sounds rational so I would put him at second. If you are allowed to choose from outside the joinables however I think Duncan clearly overshadows all of them. Inspirational and intelligent.

Wynne, she seems the only one who would have the right attitude to handle both a group and be able to rationally fight the blight.
Then: Sten, Dog (just because it would be crazy, following a war dog to end the blight), Oghren, Morrigan, Zevran, Leliana (I'd be afraid of her) and Alistair.
But i agree Duncan would be the best option, if we could choose someone outside the group.

Playing as a rogue with assassin specialization on the 1st playthrough, I'd go with Zevran. Who better to learn from than an Antivan Crow? And likely wouldn't have to listen to lectures about morality.
