Yes, this inability to empathize is similiar to research that I have read about criminals, specifically serial killers.  Where patterns suggest that a lot of the serial killers and the like have underdeveloped frontal lobe regions of the brain.  Which is the area of the brain that enables us to empathize.  This can be through birth or injury.  Combine this with child abuse and you have a potentially dangerous person on your hands.
