No it wasn't. "Discuss your favorite characters from the Mass Effect games" was also added yesterday. So from that original description, character support threads were still not intended to go in this forum, but fan's creative works were.Ecael wrote...

The "share your stories, artwork, music, web sites or other creative works" line was always there. The characters are relevant to that.

Yes, I know that line was always there. Characters are relevant to creative works in that creative works are likely to include the characters. Discussion of the characters is another matter.Ecael wrote...

Amidst the sea of spam, there is far more "serious discussion" in the character threads than most of the threads I see pop up in the Storyline forum. Of the 18 non-stickied threads on page one, I'd call a couple "serious." Some are certainly funny. But not very serious...

Given that some of those serious discussions in the character threads carry a scope larger than the subject of the thread, encouraging such discussion to be given its own topic in the storyline forum would certainly help promote more serious discussion to a larger fanbase beyond those reading just one character thread. But a lot of posters in character threads simply don't want to venture out of their comfort zone.
True.
Partly it is the community that is fostered by having a shared interest. People get comfortable talking to the same group of people.
But I think everyone should venture out more. I've loved exploring the other threads.

Which claim of mine did he dismiss?
I thought I was dismissing his claim...
Maybe we were dismissing each other. Sounds like a bad romance movie...
"Dismiss This... a tale of love, betrayal, and downright apathy"
He was talking about all character threads. As if the character threads are the reason the forum isn't "serious" enough. Like we were the one thing holding the forum back from being truly serious.

Unlike the folks that use those discussion threads, the gameplay and strategy discussion is not confined to any single thread. It is more about discussing new ideas, or answering individual questions folks have. That task just became significantly more difficult because there are probably 25 or more separate threads dedicated to specific characters and such that are all bumped very frequently, burying any new topics regarding gameplay questions or character build discussion.
I hope they reconsider this because a lot of us have no interest in the fan appreciation threads, and those of us looking to discuss the topics that this forum was previously dedicated to are going to have to look 3+ pages back just to find new topics that are less than a single day old because of how frequently those fan threads move.
Truth be told, I don't see how this change benefits the forum structure for any of us.

My feeling exactly. If and until they seperate fiction discussion from gameplay strategy discussion, this forum is dead to me. I have no interest in coming on here and scrolling past 50+ page threads of people discussing why this character or that character needs to be in ME3... How people justify spending time in your life arguing over things that are totally pointless and out of your control is beyond my comprehension. II'll simply go to another forum to have logical discussions on gameplay and strategy.

I don't know about all of the character threads but it's incredibly rare that I see a "bump" post on the ones that I do visit. I've certainly not seen people bumping and saying, "Oh, my gosh, the imaginary competition we're having with a character that has nothing to do with our conversation had a more recent post!" When I post it's because I have something to say about the character or the question under consideration. I don't think most people who add to those threads believe that keeping it in some golden forum position will affect ME3 development at all. They just want to be able to find and continue the discussion they were having.
I'm still fairly new around here. (About a month.) But I heard there used to be some fear that characters wouldn't make it into ME2. Or it would be a reduced role. So thread sizes were a way to show the devs that there is indeed a desire for the characters to have a large role in the game. And even now, there partly is a "Woo Hoo, our thread has xxxx posts! We are awesome!" attitude around here.

I do know that there was a lot of that because people saw Tali's inclusion as an LI as bowing to fan pressure. But the "look how many posts we have" mentality is pretty widespread on long-lived threads. I hang out on a forum that had a thread about baking soda and we got the same sorts of posts because it seemed almost like an accomplishment to have so much to say (and so many participants) about such a small thing (like the ME1 LIs in ME2).
