Why are Engineers unpopular?

Biotics and guns are just more exciting to larger number of people than tech skills. As I said above, every class is pretty powerful and fun if you know how to use em. It just seems that spamming combat drone and incinerate isn't everyone's cup of tea.
I'd say it's the 'caster' classes (Sentinel/Adept/Engineer) that aren't as popular as the combat focused ones (Soldier/Vanguard/Infiltrator).

Adepts are popular, especially in ME1. It's just people get discouraged with all the sheilding on insanity. Which really isn't much of an issue, but people got it in their heads that the adept is gimped.
The Sentinel on the other hand can be very combat focuessed with the assault sentinel build. It's probably the most powerful combat class I played on insanity. There just isn't too many flashy videos online showing how combat powerful the assault sentinel can be.

With the Adept, it just doesn't seem like many around these parts play it (in ME2), unless I'm looking in the wrong places

It is the ninja-class. Like Mordin, easy to dismiss in the face of more combat-heavy classes such as the vanguard. But an adept with elite singularity aiming skills will go far.jlb524 wrote...

I play mainly as an Adept, with sniping.. Adept + Widow = I win!jlb524 wrote...
That is how I played the Sentinel (combat focused/Assault Armor/shotgun for bonus), but I figured most played it as a caster and took Power Armor.

QFT. I've been messing around with tying unlock commands to my numpad keys, and the Adept with a Rev and a Widow is hilarious. It's like a cross between Darth Sidious and Rambo.

I wonder why. I find the 'caster' classes much more enjoyable. OK, maybe not the Adept on Insanity, all those additional immunities are no fun. And every time I notice armor protects against Throw, Pull or Singularity, I'm annoyed because that's implausible, game balance be damned.jlb524 wrote...

I'd say it's the 'caster' classes (Sentinel/Adept/Engineer) that aren't as popular as the combat focused ones (Soldier/Vanguard/Infiltrator).
So, Engineers and Sentinels, the remainng "caster" classes, are much more enjoyable than Soldiers or Vanguards.

I guess you cheated with the Widow, because Adepts don't get that.... Easy to say that's a win situation....Sunnie22 wrote...

not saying they are bad though,
lot of classes got wonderful new toys, and on the paper engies are pistol'n'drone
goes without saying that's ignoring the beautiful array of strategies all tech powers gives.
The engineer is the only class I really enjoy playing since ME1 actually, and only class I completed insanity with.
love the class so much that my bonus power is always neural shock, to keep it "pure"
don't use much beside being the kill husk button with very low cooldown

Also... w/Infiltrator - On any difficulty: Finding a loner, cloaking, moving to point blank, and then holding an smg is really fun. If people want a tech class there's something about invisibility that's just sexy.

Having played all but Sentinel and Engineer, I wonder which class would be more fun. Enginer with Drone, AI and Dominate, definitely. It is just so strange from a roleplay perspective why an Engineer should be able to Dominate (biotic power).

I think of the word Engineer as more than just your typical definition of Engineer. Like all classes of Shepards are trained as field soldiers, and the class name just describes their specialization of combat. So an Engineer Shepard really doesn't belong in the engine room, he's just trained to be a tech-specialized soldier called an Engineer. Or something like that.Kaylord wrote...
Engineer had the least appeal to me in ME1 and so in ME2, too. Engineers belong to the engine room of the Normandy. I never understood why an Engineer should be 1XO of the Normandy, even less so the head of a N7 special task force.

Anyway, I never like using biotic powers on a nonbiotic class, but Dominate just fits so well as a counterpart to AI Hacking. And the way I play Engineer is all about distracting the enemy, having them fight anything but me. I do this mostly through the use of the Combat Drone, though.

And your partners are AWFUL soldiers. I could never let them that responsability; maybe a supporting soldier, but they can't be the main tank.

Answer is pretty simple. It's about everyones playing style, not about what's good.Ieldra2 wrote...
Probably most players' experience is different. Why?
Every player likes to play sertain way and they don't allways like some classes, because it doesn't fit they style of playing. Example I play my self infiltrator, because I like how versitile it is. Also it has long range attacks and ability stay hidden. How ever, I don't like summoning or close combat. Summoning is too passive way and close combat not modern enough. (To my combat style)

Anyway, I love the Engineer. It really has a lot of options to negate repetitious gameplay and its powers are much more useful than the Adept.
But the Adept is my favorite class

That's true for a majority of powers for a majority of classes. Dominate doesn't even really make sense for anyone who's not an Ardat Yakshi, and Warp Ammo doesn't even really... make sense.
Engineer is without a doubt my favorite class, kind of stinks that they lost their ability to be combat medics though with the new health system. Now they're just the techies.

One of the more humorous quirks of the ME1 combat system is that with the right skillset and upgrades, the pistol had the highest DPS of any weapon including the assault rifle.Alex_SM wrote...
Really in the ME1 and ME2 combat system I see every "non Soldier" class as a suport class. I did some playtrhoughs and at the end I never used powers as the main combat habilities rather than supporting ones. I can't live without the assault riffle, I found every other weapon nearly useless except for specific moments.
The developers smartly fixed that for ME2, but I still do get a great kick out of shooting the pistol forever when I return to a ME1 playthrough.
