Which would that be?
I've already learned that the Evi is pretty much essential for shotgun-wielding ones if you want them to do any damage at all, but I'm still unsure when it comes to SMGs, pistols and sniper rifles.
Will a squaddie be more useful with the Tempest or Locust? Which would be better if there was an ammo power involved (squad cryo mostly)?

I read that pistols were best with squad cryo

Ammo vs husks ( instead of smg) but I've not

Tested it yet.

You have to keep in mind that squadmates don't need to worry about running out of ammo and they are fairly accurate shots. So while the Locust works best for me because of its easier accuracy, the Tempest is better against health, shield, and barriers. Since accuracy isn't a concern for squadmates, the Tempest is the better SMG. Regarding sniper rifles, I personally hate using the Viper, but it is deadly in the hands of squadmates. Again, highest damage coupled by a knockback effect for each rapid shot.

In my own experience, the type of weapon isn't so much of a concern on what ammo power you wish to use compared to what situation you're going to be in. Incendiary is extremely lethal, but squad cryo makes for great crowd control. Warp ammo is essential for an Infiltrator build working on the one-shot headshot kills on Insanity difficulty (though it's only one part of what you need to achieve it).

As have been said the main advantage squadmates get are infinite ammo plus very little penalty from recoil in accuracy. In general you should give them weapons that are easy to use and if possible avoid the ones that leave them exposed for too long to enemy fire (like some assault rifles). The player can easily see when his health bar is dropping, but the ai is not very smart.

On to specifics, these are the weapons i like to give them

Pistol: Carnifex, better than the basic pistol, squad ignore the low ammo problem

Submachine gun: Tempest/Locus, i´ve not noticed any big difference, but the tempest on the hand of squadmates is usually more accurate than when you use it, specially if you don´t fire in bursts.

Assault rifle: Vindicator by far, it has the greatest damage besides the revenant, low ammo don´t affect squadmates, and firing in bursts reduce the time your squadmates are standing around taking shots.

Shotgun: Eviscerator, it have one of the highest damage per shot. The main thing thought is that it has greater range, and can do more damage from afar. Squad members never get too close to use the shotgun properlu (point blank) so you may as well give them the shotgun which is better at killing things from afar.

Sniper: Mantis, it does a lot of damage and the squad are quite accurate with it, plus the ammo is no longer a problem. I like how it has a big bonus agaisnt armour, so when i need to deal with armour i change to sniper rifles, that, along with the sniper ap upgrade, makes them eat throught armor.

I agree with what Mykel said, except for the SMG. The Tempest is far better on a squadmate than the locust is. They have a higher rate of fire on it, it does more damage, and they're just as accurate with it as the player is with a locust.

Why the Mantis over the Viper for squaddies? Aren't they able to pull off rapid fire headshots with the Viper? Though I've played through the game, I must admit I rarely pay attention to how my squadmates are shooting.

Tempest, Vindicator, Viper, Eviscerator.

Hella funny when Tali goes after that huge geth at the end of her loyalty mission and knocks him down in one shot with the eviscerator.

Tempest cause it's dps is higher than locust and you're pretty much guaranteed that every shot will hit when it's being fired by a squadie. Fix them up with incendiary, warp or ap ammo and they churn the battlefield. Or use squad cryo if you have it.

Then for those with assault rifles, I like the vindicator or the geth rifle. Mostly the geth because with an ammo power it's full auto really shines. I'd give them the Revnant if I could, but sadly only shep gets that (unless you're on a pc and change some things).

My guess is the one shot from the Mantis requires less exposure time out of cover than the rapid fire of the Viper. However, the rapid fire of the Viper is accompanied by knockback the entire time. It also has higher DPS than the Mantis.

For my Infiltrator, the Viper is sacrilege compared to the well timed headshots of the Mantis and the Widow. But if the squadmates are going to take on support roles, the Viper does work better at distracting the enemy.

I give em mantis, coz of it. IN insanity they can't be popping 3-4 shots and get killed.

I used the Viper, and with my Adrenaline rush it serves a nice purpose.

I've always wondered if for the Pistol/Shotgun squadmates (Jacob, Jack and Tali) using a pistol instead of shotgun would be a better idead overall, since they seem to miss most of their hits with the shotgun and if they get closer to the enemies they tend to die.

So, Carnifex or Eviscerator for those?

I will give them the Carnifex unless certain conditions are met. For Jacob and Grunt, it's the opening of their loyalty powers where they can give themselves a considerable defense. Mixed with their incendiary ammo, they are quick to kill and tough to be killed. I'll let Tali play with her shotgun if I've decided to have more control over the squadmates' powers. That way I can direct her combat drone to properly distract the enemy she's trying to take down with a shotgun. Jack, unfortunately, is never in a good situation to use the shotgun; at least, not on the higher difficulties. I suppose on the lower difficulties, her pull acts just as well as Tali's combat drone as a distraction tactic while she sets up a shotgun blast. But I tend to use her mostly for her shockwave and warp explosions on the lower difficulties.

That is exactly why I did it :P.

All those with pistols have the avenger...coz they use in in cenematics. Me on the other hand, changed my pistol for the Shuriken, weakest SMG coz that is what I use on cenematics...sometimes the predator but nah nah, rather have the shuriken :P.
