I'm cautiously optimistic.
I just hope that it's not completely linear. GTA 4 may seem like a non-linear game but it actually is extremely linear. It just doesn't seem that way at first glance since the big city gives you the impression of an open world sandbox type adventure game when it reality the big city is mostly lifeless and only prods out the games length with boring mini games.
If it has a branching storyline, I may buy it.

Super Mario Galaxy 2's perfect 10 score from gamespot makes it seem like a sure bet for GOTY.  Then again, Demon's Souls was their 2009 GOTY even though it wasn't the highest rated.

I think it would be quite ridiculous if Red Dead won many GotY honors, it just isn't that good and I'm hoping that it will just fade away soon.

I really doubt anything will top ME2 for me this year, so I'm pulling for it.

I think it's safe to say that Final Fantasy XIII stands no chance.

I would hope not. I actually kind of enjoyed FFXIII for its unique gameplay, but the mark system was awful, as was the story and the characters.

That is exactly how I felt about XII.  I think Final Fantasy XIII's reviews have been way too mixed for it to have any shot at a GOTY award.  It's interesting because reading most of the positive reviews I get the impression that the reviewers know the game sucks but they just don't have the guts to say it.
I think only Famitsu gave it a perfect score but Famitsu gives out a perfect score every other month now it seems.

I hope Deus ex 3 will be good enough to win goty.

But I bet it's Portal 2. Gabe Newell said it's going to be Valves best game ever.

A little early to make predictions.

I agree with this. So far the only game that I have played which I would consider game of the year is Mass Effect 2. However the year is far from over, many good games can come out yet.

Right now, there are only 3 contenders. Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption and Super Mario Galaxy 2. I have yet to play the last two, but will very shortly as I catch up on other games now that school is out. Mass Effect 2 will for sure when RPG of the year hands down, nothing else comes close.

There are still other releases coming out this year, including Metroid Other M, and possibly the new Zelda game. Seeing how Obsidian really messed up on Alpha Protocol, I don't see Fallout: New Vegas making a run for it. Call of Duty can't win because it will be the same game, but in a new setting. God of War 3 probably won't get it either. While it's a great game, it really didn't do anything new, except be the amazing game that the God of War series has been.

I really can't think of anything else coming out this year that could do it, but who knows...Demon's Soul's won it last year for Gamespot.

Hard to say.... Mass Effect 2 will probably win for best RPG, but there's gonna be a lot of competition for GOTY. IF Starcraft 2 does actually come out on time, I think it's going to beat everybody, just because it is such a long anticipated game, that people are going to over praise it because they're just glad it's finally here.

Red Dead redemption, no doubt.

Rpg of the year will be mass effect 2.

I would think they'd give it to Starcraft 2 just because of sheer Blizzard fanboyism, assuming it's not delayed again...... it's release date will probably be a national holiday in South Korea.

It probably should be Portal 2 but it will be something like Mass Effect 2 or Super Mario Galaxy 2 or red dead redemption 2. Either way, I think Portal 2 will best these games.

It's not like Red Dead Redemption is revolutionary either. Grand Theft Auto with horses, wow what a novel concept.

I wouldn't call Red Dead Redemption Grand Theft Auto wth horses.  There are similar gameplay elements there such as the auto aim, the long horse rides to missions, and other small, but harder to define things.

It's more of a GTA 4 than any other GTA, which is to say it takes itself serious and actually has characters, a story, and emotion.  These are general things.  Red Dead doesn't put a huge focus on crime, it has a much more free roaming feel than you get from GTA4, and it lacks the over-top feel of the GTA series.

Anyone who plays Red Dead Redemption and played the Grand Theft Auto series should come out recognizing that the games are distinctly separate.  Similarities?  Yes.  But the same?  Absolutely not.

Really? Because I was just about to say the opposite, shooting and movement mechanics are pretty much the same as GTA 4 and so is the mission structure, sure it has minor differences and additions to the gameplay (and maybe a few subtractions as well as to be expected considering the setting) but all in all the only real difference between the 2 games is the setting and the fact you use horses instead of cars, hell I half expected Roman to call and ask if I wanted to go bowling. To me it feels like Rockstar just copy and pasted GTA 4's gameplay mechanics and gave them a western theme.

However this is not to say that RDR is a bad game because I have enjoyed it so far, I just dont feel that RDR is as revolutionary as people say and I definately dont think it deserves all the praise it has recieved so far and IMO is not worthy of the title GOTY.

It wont win game of the year, if it does then there is something very very wrong. But thats not to say its an awful game. I completed it and enjoyed it for the most part but it wasnt half the game it could have been and it had quite possibly the worst character in the history of games in Snow. Its a 7/10 game.

I would hope ME2 would win but I think RDR will. I love RDR despite all its flaws, which is even more surprising considering I found GTA soulless and boring. ME2 is probably the better game but RDR is more likely to get the awards.

Mario Galaxy 2, not only is the game just plain fantastic and polished, it is also the second highest rated game of all time (98%) so Galaxy 2 has the best chance of winning of GOTY, with ME2 winning best RPG.

Dragon Age, MW2, ME2 (I guess) will all get GotY editions, IMHO. If not, DA and ME2 will easily get collected editions with all the DLC.

I don't understand how the critics could so easily over-look the design problems in Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age, it's very rudimentary gameplay  stuff muddled up.
