Look, I actually think FFXIII is an excellent game. But it has "some" flaws. As such, there is the possibility that other games with less flaws would end up winning. That's pretty much it for me. It loses simply because other games are better, not because it's bad.

As I said much earlier, if Black Ops is as good or better than World at War than it should have a chance. Also, Red Dead is a clear contender as well as Galaxy 2. I think the award will go to a game that's released later in the year simply because the insane speed at which graphics/games get better means that those few months could have a pretty large impact.

Hmmm this is true althpough just because someone does not think the game is GotY material does not mean they hate the game ;) (I can't say I hate FF13 yet because I have never played it, but what I have heard from RPG loving friends, one who is a big FF fan, the game would not be my cup of tea)

Also, we still got some awesome games coming this and next month, Crackdown 2 looks particularly interesting considering how fun the first game was :D

How about Dragon Quest IX as this year's dark horse candidate for game of the year?

I LOVED Dragon Quest VII(then known as Dragon Warrior VII) for the PS1. Dragon Quest VIII was fun too but not as good as VII. I'm really looking forward to Dragon Quest IX.

I hope Mario doesn't get the pity win. In all honesty it was good, but it was just about the same thing as the first one, and that wasn't SUPER great. I want either FFXIII or ME2, either would make me happy.

Galaxy 2 took all the aspects of the great Mario games and put it into one amazingf game. Galaxy 2 did what a game is ment to do, be fun.

True. But I just don't think one of the Wii's only two good game (the first Galaxy being the other) should win just for being GOOD. I just didn't find it ground breaking like some of the others with a chance.

Only two good games....*headdesk*

LOZ: Twilight Princess, Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, New Super Mario Bros., Dead Space Extraction, MadWorld, House of the Dead Overkill, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, Zack and Wiki, Punch Out!, Red Steel 2, Metroid Prime Trilogy, Little King's Story, de Blob, Muramasa: The Demon's Blade

And that's not even counting the online titles: World of Goo, Cave Story, Lost Winds, Swords and Soldiers, the best games from the NES, SNES, and N64 available as well.

And then there are the ports that play better than the original games: Resident Evil 4, Okami

Just because people are prejudiced and stupid about the Wii doesn't change the fact that there are more than enough excellent games available for it.

Quote for truth. I think it can win, however I think Halo: Reach will probably take the cake for more then the fact that it will (probably) be good. I see the nominees going like this (I hope):

Halo: Reach (most likely)
Final Fantasy 13 (I really hope so)
Red Dead Redemption (also very likely)
Mass Effect 2 (I hope so)
Call of Duty Black Ops (Maybe, because it's COD)

And like I said Halo wil probably win.

Treyarch always gets the shaft by media outlets because mainly of the rep from COD3 I would not expect Black Ops to be regarded that highly. Also since they do a COD game on a yearly basis it also has that against it.

Agreed, but I really hope we are wrong also, add Fallout: New Vegas to list looks to be great

Graphics will probably go to CoD because if there is something Treyarch can do it is make games with great graphics (and I can't tollerate the series)

At least FF13, F:NV, or ME2 has best RPG of the year pretty much locked

Oh sorry, forgot about F:NV. Add that to my list of nominees and put "hope so" next to it.

I don't think Halo Reach will be as critically acclaimed as it's predecessors. Everything I have seen from the game so far indicates that it is just more of the same Halo we've been playing since 2001. I think the formula is getting stale.

Then again, if a derivative military shooter like Modern Warfare 2 can get GOTY who knows. This is why I don't give very much credence to game of the year awards, they hardly matter.

This is what I'm saying! The hype machine gives awards to anything with the COD or Halo logos on it. Not that these games are particularly bad, it's just that the same formula for 5+ games can become a bit monotinus.

My bro already has the Collector's Edition pre-ordered (he loved F3 so it was expected), but I agree with the hope so (then again F3 won GotY the year it was released)

Also, Bethesda might launch the next Elder Scrolls this year, if they do it will most likely win

I would probably venture to guess that Galaxy 2 would be the frontrunner. If the next Legend of Zelda game gets released this year expect that to be a frontrunner. Those tend to sweep quite a few outlets in the award categories.

rabble rabble competative herp derp And at least I backed up my opinion with sales numbers fallacies and more hyperbole + continued weaseling and ever-increasing fluster.

1, For a word you throw around so liberally you could at least put an effort into spelling it right

2, OF COURSE SC2 is going to be similar to SC1 - That's what a darn "SEQUEL" is supposed to be! and if you were any good at those games, you'd know that if they changed the basic formula of StarCraft too much then it wouldn't be "StarCraft" anymore! That'd be like making a flight simulator and labeling it Dragon Age 2, and then the spite that's inherent in you guys will kick in and bash it for not being faithful to the series and blahblah just like how some people hate on Fallout 3, for example.

yeah, if you knew jack about what "competitive" means you'd know how different SC2 is to SC1, or even what the core focus of that series is when compared to say the Warcraft RPS where they're more free to experiment without breaking an already-established "e-sports" scene. Quit regurgitating what you hear from other scrubs and actually get better at these games before pretending to have some opinion about them.

Either way, how much new stuff did Mass Effect 2 bring to ME1? or, oooh Dragon Age: Awakening was an utterly different experience than Origins, right? Granted, it was only an Expansion, but take a note: SC2 is more innovative right now (even without the single-player campaign) than Dragon Age II will be.

3, Just what the heck makes you think games like New Super Mario or Mario Galaxy are "casual?" is it,
  • the Difficulty? (they're no more easier than Dragon Age is)
  • the Depth? (there's a lot more different mechanics in those games than in DA)
  • the Content? (again, easily more hours of playability across distinct locations than in DA)
  • the Accessibility? (I get it, the fewer people being able to pick up and enjoy a game the more oooh "hardcore" it is!)
  • the "competativeness?" (that implies multiplayer, right? well neither DA nor ME/2 have that either do they)
  • the cartoon'ish/colorful graphics? (funny how you counted Fire Emblem and Metroid Prime as "hardcore" then)
  • the lack of Blood and Gore and [Clothed] Sex? (this is probably your best chance to decide what makes "Hardcore" but it could leave you with not many games left)
Have you played Super Paper Mario on the Wii? Hell that game alone has more content, a more original story, more CHARM, and had more inspired creativity gone into it than Dragon Age (just for an identifiable example; I don't hate DA myself) and all its add-ons combined!

and that's what Games are ABOUT and that's what they were when they started out: having FUN, not limiting yourself to specific genres (which is ironic considering a "hardcore" gamer would be enjoying a wider variety of more games, not fewer) or styles and all that crap just to hop on some perceived coolwagon.

inb4 more aimless fluster and cookie-cutter comebacks to perceived slights.  pff

I think a little clarification is needed. Treyarch don't do CoD on a yearly basis - Activision do. Since CoD2 (I believe) it's been IW > Trey > IW > Trey > IW and we're coming up to Trey again, i.e. Black Ops.
This'll be far from the last CoD game, though. MW3 is already in development I believe.

RDR, GOTYAY. Also dat ****in' ending. Best ending in any game I've played in awhile. At least that's my GOTY. What the industry will pick? That's something different.
