To be entirely frank, this forum is where the character threads should have belonged to begin with. It is the character forum after all. It's not just the gameplay discussion bin.

It had character in the title. The original description of the thread implied that character was Shepard, specifically your personal Shepard.

Look at the sticky welcoming you to this forum. Now subtract "It is also for fans to discuss..." and "Discuss why Mordin is your favorite..." from the description. You then have the original description of the forum, so read it that way and tell me it's talking about the character threads.

I see you never read the description of the Character and build forum before the change(and associated edit to description), you just read the title.

Hmm, let me enlighten you, it was about your character and your build, not game characters that are story realated, otherwise, the "I love you threads" didn't belong here until they edited and rewrote the description, unless you are trying to say Tali, miri, wrex, "The Asari queen of Omega", "The Illium Bartender", Counciler Anderson and Undina are all your characters?

Any chance I could get some tips on telling when a secret special definition of a word like "character" is being used? I thought I knew what it meant, but apparently there's a way of writing it that means something different, and I'd hate to make this mistake again.

Sure, you can read the welcome post to the forum next time, where the purpose of the forum was further defined.

It's not going to help you to read it now, it's been changed to accommodate for the change. So whatever people can say for what the forum used to be, it doesn't change the fact the moderators have changed its purpose. But mixing threads about story-oriented characters with gameplay-oriented strategy is still an odd mix. They both attract two completely different type of players.

I don't understand the "it says character in the title" argument. The can put whatever they want there. What really matters it's the forum's content .
They're mixing threads about builds, gameplay, tips on how to beat the game with fan threads. That doesn't make much sense IMO.

It kind of made more sense in the storyline section IMO, because fan threads are talking about how their character should be implemented in the story. But i there should be another sub-forum but that means they might need to hire a few extra mods to keep an eye out on us.

I read the description back when I first arrived on the forum and I believed then (as I do now) that the general discussion forum is more geared towards gameplay. After all, spoilers aren't allowed there. They're allowed here.

If that were the case, I couldn't have asked anyone about the various strategies they used in fighting the Colossus.

And people couldn't ask about the location of various upgrades.

And all the videos directing people toward class gameplay would be spoilerrific.

Spoilers are allowed in general discussion with a disclaimer. In here and story discussion, no disclaimer is needed because they're expected. If I go into a forum solely looking for a strategy, I'm going to not want to bump into posts that accidentally spoil the rest of the game for me.

Looking at the description of the forum on the Forum Home page and then Priestly's warning about spoilers in the forum itself, it would appear spoilers simply aren't allowed in General Discussion. Period.

Now, it's been 4 months since the release of ME2 and a few years more since the release of ME1, so perhaps they might consider reevaluating the purpose of General Discussion. But it would seem if you want to discuss some aspect about ME2, you need to post in either the ME2 Campaign and Storyline forum or the Characters, classes and Builds forum. And if you want to discuss ME1 without running into spoilers about ME2, you post in ME1 Campaign and Storyline forum.

Point is, character builds and class information in of themselves (with two exceptions) are not particularly spoilery.

Horse manure.

Builds frequently reference why's and how's to do things with a build simply to explain the build strong points.  Also this was a strategy forum as well which mandates asking how you beat something or explaining a novel way of doing so, like charging the Colossus in Tali's mission.  The Character aspect was solely for your character Shepard just like it was in DA......see below for the header in DA's Character forum.....

So what's General Discussion for, if not gameplay or story?

Discussing the movie. Discussing what sort of multiplayer Bioware might be working on for the franchise. Discussing aspects of the universe without directly referencing elements of the story. Much discussion walks the fine line between being general and specific. Which is why I said since it's been four months since ME2 was released, they might want to reevaluate how they view General Discussion (nonspoiler), ME2 Storyline Discussion (spoiler), and ME1 Storyline Discussion (spoiler). Spoilers might not be a problem again until we get closer to ME3's release.
