Aargh, Bioware please don't tell me you're going the multiplayer route for ME3

The next Mass Effect might not be a solely single-player experience. A new job posting on LinkedIn suggests that the series is taking a turn toward multiplayer.

Maybe "suggests" is too weak a verb - the BioWare Montreal opening (picture below) is for a "Multiplayer Programmer (Mass Effect Franchise)." Not much room for interpretation, there. The ideal candidate will have to come up with "solutions to deal with network latency, de-synchronization of data between networked machines/players, packet compression, cheating, and interrupted connections." They'll also have to "work with databases that allow for chat rooms, client/server games, player matching, player stats, etc."

One other tidbit, from the position summary: "[Multiplayer Programmers] work with both the front and back ends to take existing single player user experiences and make them multiplayer safe." I guess you could argue that means co-op. However, in a way all online play is just a translation of the single-player experience; both have the same basic mechanics, after all.

Back in February, EA chief operating officer John Schappert said something "far-reaching" would be coming for Mass Effect. Maybe this is what they meant?

I don't really care if it's multi-player as long as the game is good.

Dear Lord, say it ain't so. I have hope in the word "franchise." If they do something after ME3 (which is entirely possible given their timeframe for getting ME3 released,) I wouldn't mind. Injecting a multiplayer this late in the game would be tacky, and would be quite frankly, akin to IP rape.

If ME3 even so much as carries a mere whiff of MP then I will call it a day with Mass Effect even if that means I never get to finish the story.

I don't mind if they want to do a SEPARATE game set in the Mass Effect universe with MP but god no leave the Mass Effect series MP free please. I bought ME and ME 2 because they were excellent single player experiences and I do not want the third one to be anything but an excellent single player experience.

Still all I can do is vote with my wallet and I will certainly do that if you add MP into Mass Effect 3

It was inevitable. Mass Effect 2 brought in a lot of shooter fans, an audience Bioware hasn't ever had to cater to in the past. These fans expect multiplayer. It's a smart move on Bioware's part to include it. More of those fans who're on the fence about getting ME2 because it lacked multiplayer will be more likely to jump on board with ME3, and with them potential sales for the earlier games in the franchise. As much as you hardcore true RPG fans don't like it, it's not your decision, thankfully! Personally, as long as the single player experience doesn't suffer for it (Resident Evil 5 is a great example of multiplayer hampering the single player experience.) I'm all for it.

I'm an RPG fan first, shooter fan second, but to have all the greatest aspects of both genres in one game? Bring it on.

The chances of them adding MP to the core "Mass Effect" experience is zero. I mean....it can't happen logically. It's not even worth discussing IMO.

If nothing else they'd add MP as an addition totally separate from the main game. I have no problems with that.

*sigh*.....And once more, a great series feels it necessary to cater to the current "fad" crowd.  Bioshock did the same thing, tacking on a multiplayer mode, which wasn't bad.  It left the solo game alone and if that is what happens, then fine.  I've got no issue with that.

I really hope they're indicating that Co-Op would be coming rather than versus Team Deathmatch type MP.

I would love to team up with say 3 friends (online &/or split-screen) and take on enemies like in GeOW2's Horde mode. Or a separate SP campaign with Co-Op that friends can advance in together - taking on ANOTHER ROLE other than Shepard (hello character customization).

If it happens, I will shoot Shepard myself.

I don't see what the big deal is. We don't even have any details yet people are already freaking out and damning the franchise. Who's to say they don't go the Bioshock 2 route, which worked out great, and have two separate teams working on the two aspects of the game?

How about we wait for more details before we start crying foul. Or don't. Not my problem, I'm just going to wait and see.

It's not as if mindlessly going around shooting stuff is totally new to the "ME" experience. The framework was already set for this in Pentacle Station. Imagine that type of game play, but with 2 friends.

As long as the single player portion is good and long, all power to MP.

So you're saying fans of Gears of War, Halo or Half-life don't care about story, or lack the attention span to sit through anything not related to shooting or blowing something up for more than 30 seconds? Two of my multiplayer buddies who never touched RPGs play Mass Effect 2 and it made them not only ME2 fans, but Bioware fans. I think more often than not it's more that some FPS gamers just haven't been introduced to quality RPGs. Brah.

Please keep ME3 singleplayer. I'd love to see multiplayer games in the ME universe, but not for ME3.

I 100% predicted ME3 would go co-op/multiplayer long ago (because that is the new standard, and Bioware needs to bring something new to the table to keep ME3 hot for reviewers, and not just "same old, same old"). It will happen.

End of line.

Although I would agree that ME2 should bring in more traditionall shooter gamers... the sales numbers compared to ME1 would suggest otherweise.   That, or: for every shooter fan gained, a RPG fan was lost.  I don't buy that however, as most RPG'ers here that cry about immersion or garbage like that... have played through the entire game multiple times and have run through the codex material with a fine tooth comb.  (i.e. they loved the game, but had some issues).

brah

Agreed. Not saying "same old, same old" is bad since I love old ME. But props to BioWare for exploring new forms of gameplay. This is how the game society goes forward.

As long as Single Player takes a front seat, because it's been proven awesome.

Whoa whoa whoa hold the phone there champ.

"Gears of War", "Halo", and "Half Life".....seriously? One of those doesn't belong. No offense but for you to lump those three games into the same category it's hard to believe you know anything at all about games.

Honestly and IMO? I'd say that people who actually appreciated GoW and Halo's ballstastic storylines have terrible taste. Of course that's just me.

But yes: I'm saying that if Bioware wanted to really draw in the shooter crowd they'd cut the dialog by about 90%. Not saying that people are "ignorant of story" or "noobs", rather that people want the simple satisfaction that games were based on.

Holy crap, calm down people. There's reason to be nervous if, say, the single player suffers because resources were devoted to multiplayer, but look at the 'facts' we have now: they're hiring people to work on it. As in, people who have MP experience. As in, NOT the people working on the single player experience.

Lord, why would you people complain just because something is THERE?
