Arguably, for me, where Mass Effect 2 fails are the Gears-style missions like Korlus and Horizon. It's still a fantastic game, it's something I've been thinking about for a few months now. I am happy with it, and how immersive it can get, but their need to cater to a more mainstream audience has hurt the sequel I feel. Essentially 90% of the audience that bought ME 1 are RPG fans, like me, they've alienated some of that audience a bit with ME 2 but now would they risk pretty much most of that audience by including a multi-player mode ala Gears, CoD?
I had been waiting for a while for a good sci-fi RPG like Mass Effect and I was so glad it came, I just hope, regardless, if they include a multi-player mode, that a separate team makes it or that it's DLC / another game. So what I'm saying is, if Bioware listen to the fans and they combine Mass Effect's RPG features (of course with an improvement), pacing, music, immersion, level design (main quest), atmosphere, character development with Mass Effect 2's art style, combat gameplay, characters. Anything less will be a disappointment to me.
Just don't forget your true fans Bioware, the ones who bought the first game for an unforgettable RPG experience and got it. You couldn't blame them for catering also to a more mainstream audience in the 2nd, fortunately I still love the game. I just have my reservations about the third, with or without a multi-player mode.
