TO ALL THE 'CLEVER', 'OBSERVANT' PEOPLE THAT LIKE TO POINT OUT OVERUSED ELEMENTS OF THE AVATAR PLOT:
Star Wars!: Based many elements (see: shamelessly ripped off) from several Akira Kurosawa films, including Hidden Fortress, Rashomon, Yojimbo, etc. In case you didn't notice, that film was pretty well liked by a few people here and there, I dunno
The Magnificent Seven!: Largely considered to be one of the best American Westerns. Is literally based on Seven Samurai. Nobody really cared, because it was a great movie.
The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly! (And all the other 'Man With No Name' films!): Yojimbo, again. Nobody cared, again. Great movies, it doesn't matter if the plot and characters have been reused. What matters is that they put said plot and characters into a new setting befitting of the theme.
The Departed!: Won a bunch of Oscars, was directed by a stud you may or may not have heard of... Martin Scorsese? Ringing any bells? Yeah, this was pretty much a shot-for-shot remake of a Chinese film, Infernal Affairs.
I could go on. My point is, great movies are often based on equally great predecessors. Such is the case with Avatar. Plenty of people don't like it, that's your opinion, you're entitled to it so by all means, keep it to yourself. But don't go waving your 'NON-CONFORMIST', 'ANTI-SHEEPLE', 'AVANT-GARDE' bull**** in anyone's face just because they liked a movie you don't agree with. You can dislike the film all you want, but look at the FACTS: James Cameron spent a TON of the budget on technology to read the actor's faces when they assumed their space kitty forms. Yes, you heard that right - MONEY WAS SPENT ON CONVEYING EMOTIONS, NOT JUST PEW PEW EXPLOSIONS AND ACID TRIP SCENERY. SHOCKING, I KNOW. You can disagree with Cameron, and yes he is a flaming douchebag in real life, but he's a good director. And he makes good films.
