If anyone has ever seen RedLetterMedia he does a good critique of the film.

(The voice he uses here is not his real one for those who are wondering).

I say Ridley Scott, doubt he'd do it though. The dude knows how to make films that balance character and action very well. Plus, he's been directing all this time not like Lucas nor has he been heavy handed with cgi effects like Cameron.

Because the only reason Avatar was a success was because of the 3-D gimmick. In reality it was Pocahontas in space.

I love all the people who say that just to be nonconformists that think they're clever.

This goes both ways.  Some people like things just because it's ''cool and cutting edge''.  If you think Avatar is a highly original story you are sadly mistaken and have low standrads when it comes to storylines.  You're also delusional if you think the main emphasis on Avatar was anything other then the graphics/animation.  It heavily handed borrowed from Dances With Wolves, and every other Indian Wars movie.

Why do I read this and it screams 13 year old looking for attention with the swearing and such.

Vocabulary so limited they cant function with out swearing (or getting around the editor) to appear functional and older then they are!

I stopped reading at LULZ as responder just trying way to hard to be older and better then what he really is in real life.

once you are done bawwing, Im sure you can get off your fat ass and really answer my question

or are you one of the elitist trash that I mentioned above? One who claims to be a super nonconformist and hates Avatar in order to gain attention as the "intelligent" one?

what's wrong with cliches?
the past 20 years of fantasy literature, movies, and games have been the same tolkien-based crap over and over again

"lolololol dwarves(LOLOLOL DRUNK GIMLI SHORT <<< live underground!), elves(OMFG LEGOLAS PEW PEW), goblins, trolls, orcs, men, good vs evil"

still, each time the writers are still trying for different details, and they still manage to make a ton of money by recyling it

I don't understand what you're saying. Are you actually praising cliches because they work to bring the bottom line to authors?

hmmm, maybe cliches are being overused, but what Im saying is that they still make for good stories

what was honestly wrong with avatar?
you came there to see awesome designed CGI aliens fighting 22th century humans in walkers and gunships. The trailers never said anything else other than: "Come watch this massive pew pew fest"

Sure the plot could have had some work on it, but the acting was quite good. What were you expecting? a beautiful drama? an epic? a shakesperean worthy quote fest?

Because I was expecting more than "Come watch this massive pew pew fest" from James Cameron. If I wanted a mindless pew pew fest, I would watch Transformers. At least it doesn't pretend to be anything more than what it is.

people STILL criticized transformers because it was nothing BUT a pew pew fest, which is just as stupid as criticizing Avatar

and the trailer gave no indication of more than pew pew, but maybe a romantic subplot, given Cameron's history with Titanic

Cliches and tropes are certainly a part of pretty much all stories these days, especially movies.

But Avatar ends up just relying on its tropes to do its job for it while doing nothing to explore them or give them any more depth than a Saturday morning cartoon.

The Magnificent Seven!: Largely considered to be one of the best American Westerns. Is literally based on Seven Samurai. Nobody really cared, because it was a great movie.

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly! (And all the other 'Man With No Name' films!): Yojimbo, again. Nobody cared, again. Great movies, it doesn't matter if the plot and characters have been reused. What matters is that they put said plot and characters into a new setting befitting of the theme.

What's funny is that Kurosawa himself was influenced by American westerns.

Right.

I think there's a difference between being inspired and writing something hackneyed and preachy.

Lucas got his vision from Kurosawa influences and built upon that. You can't say that in Avatar's plot. Cameron has a vision in Avatar, but you can't say he watched a lot of Ferngully and Last Samurai for to make that film.

 x2

That's the definition of cliche: overused, hackneyed. To the point of being boring, lacking novelty, lacking vision, lacking imagination.

Wasting time you've seen before. Those are bad things.

but but..... avatar had USB ponytails!

ok fine >.> the movie was pretty cliche. I do like how avatar took the cliche and portrayed it through science fiction and pew pew

As a setting? Boring as hell.

Surprisingly, I can live with a boring setting so long as the story is amazing. Baldur's Gate 2 took place in the Forgotten Realms, but devs like David Gaider made the game's story worthwhile.

Yes, its a remake but that was back when remake was not "we run out of ideas and scrapped the bottom of the barrel".

You are talking about Spaghetti western that stand up a lot due to be rather diferent from typical Hollywood Westerns and the fact they were done at very low budgets (even back then) says something about throwing money to make things work.

God, why is everyone so horny for Blomkamp to do it? The guy has done ONE movie - and in fairness, I thought it was just alright, not the aliengasm that everyone else thought it was. Of those on the list, I'd give it to Scott first, then Abrams.

I think we need to change that question mark to a period, and delete the last word.  Bay did a decent job with the first Transformers movie, but aside from that, I've never been overly impressed.

I don't think the movie will be breathtaking, but I doubt it will suck. The ME story is more involved than most games that have movie adaptations.

I think J.C doing it might be a good thing because i belive Avatar was a good movie . But what really brung it down . That its plot was exactly the same as Pocahontus in the future. And did he do that intentionally?
