1. Quentin Tarantino. I love this guy.
2. Ridely Scott. We all know who this guy is. The movies he directed have been good, and I don't see him retiring any time soon.
3. Steven Speilberg. I don't even have to say why.
4. J.J. Abrams. Star Trek (most recent one) anyone?
5. Neill Blokamp. For those who have seen District 9 I shouldn't have to say why he would be a good candidate.
If I missed anyone, feel free to say who you think would be a good choice.

Quentin Tarantino could never tell the story of Mass Effect straight. It would be nothing but long, expletive-laden monologues, gritty, stylized action scenes, and an overall tongue-in-cheek tone.
Ridley Scott's Robin Hood is probably not his best, but he is doubtless all about quality and substance in his action and story, so he is more than able enough to go back to his sci-fi roots.
J.J. Abram's Star Trek is actually the only thing by him I've seen, but he seems very capable of diverse set-pieces, exciting action sequences and a fresh, brisk and meaningful pace and tone.
Neil Blokamp's breakout hit was mighty impressive, due in large part to the immersion factor. He can keep everything grounded, so the acting, action, and setting were all unbelievably engaging.

but it seems they've begun to build the movie ... so it is pointless to talk about possible director

Not it's not. They have found producers (Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuck) but not directors. And the movie is in its early stages. No director has been found yet.

As much as I LOVE Danny Boyle, what is it about his style that would work for Mass Effect.Axeface wrote...

The man knows how to make a science fiction film, Star Trek was fantastic.

Hes just a brilliant director. He would do an excellent job. He's actually got a pretty diverse range of styles.

JJ Abrams. He can do sci-fi well and respectfully, as he proved with the new Star Trek movie.

Star trek movie = tripe.
Firefly = Awesome. Very well done by Josh Whedon. I would be happy to hear if he got the job for ME because he's proved totally with firefly that he can do everything. The stress of a massive project like ME would probably push him to do something spectacular.

Sam Raimi is (supposedly) working on the Warcraft movie.
I doubt District 9 guy would want to repeat another science fiction flick so soon (or maybe he does, I don't really know).
I guess I'll pick whatever director actually sits down and play the damn game

It's entertaining enough ... for the masses.
However, a string of extremely long odds does not a great movie make.
From the hail mary ridiculousness of Kirk assuming command through being exiled onto the one spot in the universe that's within walking distance of a time-traveller, which also happens to be within walking distance of another guy who just so happens to be able to do the impossible with some ephemeral "future equations" ...
That little conversation between Spock and Kirk sums it all up.
Spock: Bad odds.
Kirk: I'll win because I CAN RELOAD.
Star Trek was an exercise in an urge to scream at the producers, "are you freakin' serious? Can you even do basic arithmetics?"

Maybe. I just have a feeling that he works best on a small scale, which is not Mass effect. Although, to be fair, Sunshine kicked righteous ass, so at least there's no doubt that he can do sci-fi well.Axeface wrote...

Actually, come to think of it, he could potentially do a good Mass Effect movie. It depends, but at least you can't say that his direction's generic. I dunno. I still sort of feel that Mass Effect is a little too big for him.

So the plot is a bit far-fetched? So what?
The movie was still incredibly enjoyable. The characters were believable, the setting was wonderful, and the action was fast-paced. The point of the movie was not an intricate plot, and if you're incapable of enjoying it for something as petty as that, I pity you.
Not everything has to be sophisticated to be good. Mass Effect (the game) isn't particularly sophisticated.
