Oh or M. Night Shyamalan. Shepard was a dead alien the whole time.

Ridley Scott if he can promise to stay stay away from all of the typical Hollywood cliches that he injected his latest Robin Hood movie with.....ugh.

If Michael Bay directs the Mass Effect movie then you just know Jacob is going to be played by Chris Tucker/Chris Rock and he's going to make stereotypical black one liners.

M Night Shaymalan (spelling because I probably butchered it lol XD) because it doesnt matter WHO directs the movie, it's going to suck no matter what....There has yet to be a GOOD video game/movie transfer and I can promise you Mass Effect WILL NOT break the mold.

Peter Jackson. You know, he made LotR. That makes him practically a god.

I agree. Peter Jackson would be a perfect choice.

Too busy with del Torro working on the Hobbit, and At The Mountains of Madness.  Seriously doubt he'd drop those two projects to do so video game movie.

would say Whedon. and i´m pretty sure David Gaider would like that too, being a Buffy fan :D

Joss is already working on "Avengers" so that's a no go.  My pick would be J.J. Abrams he's shown that he can do good things in the sci-fi genre

The List:

Neil Blomkamp – Maybe the perfect director for the job considering he has both an open schedule and experience in the field (District 9 among others).  He is really good at stretching the budget and maintaining high quality in terms of his product.  I mean the story in District 9 was not a 10/10 but with a good team he may be the ideal candidate.  Also Peter Jackson endorsed him for the Halo movie directorial chair.  He is an up and comer but seems to have huge potential in terms of what he could bring to the table

Guillermo del Toro - A few people have mentioned Guillermo but I don't think he would be up for the job due to the fact he is scheduled to make movies till 2020 so I don't think he'll have the time ( I know he is not working on the The Hobbit anymore) but he is very busy so I don't think he would be a realistic choice

Peter Jackson - is also quie busy with his upcoming TinTin release Temeraire and DamBusters so I think his plate is full along with the Hobbit production role (which is on Hiatus as of now)

Joss Whedon - Would be an interesting choice to say the least he has his foot in the Sci-fi door and has experience in the filed with Angel, Buffy, Firefly, Tiatn AE and Alien Screenplay credit, among others. I am still up in the air if he was chosen to direct

Alfonso Curion – Would also be an interesting choice.  He has credit on the Harry Potter movie The Prisoner of Azkaban considered one of the best of the series.  Also he has his own Children of Men to be proud of. He is technically capable but would he be the correct choice.  Also his plate is quite full for the next while.

JJ Abrams - could also be a great choice as director but his plate is very full for the time being.  Not unless Mass Effect were to be released in another 5-8 years would he likely be directing

Ridely Scott – Is way to busy so he would be a non-entry.  He would make a great director if chosen as long as there is a good writer, editor, and production team to keep the movies story and characters relatable to the audience. All I can say is Blade Runner!!

David Cronenburg – Although listed as one of the top 10 directors in the Sci-fi field by many I think I would put him in the same category as George Lucas in terms of a last resort role for directing Mass Effect.  Everything I have seen of Cronenburgs over the years makes me believe he wouldn’t make a great Mass Effect

Christopher Nolan – Directed two great movies within the Batman Franchise, and The Prestige was also great.  He is yet untested in a fully Sci-fi (Inception) movie, although he would be an ideal director making a fast paced action adventure. Although fully untested in a full out CGI-Sci-fi I think he would be a good Pick, just look at his track record!

 Notable Mentions:

Robert Zemeckis. - many notable mentions Latest The Polar Express
The Wachowski brothers – Matrix Series
Duncan Jones – Moon
Ronald Emmerich
Steven Soderbergh
Darron Aronofonsky
Matthew Vaughn
John Musker

Wish was still alive to direct:
Irvin Kershner

Top Realistic Picks:
Neil Blomkamp
JJ Abrams
Christopher Nolan

I love how Blomkamp a realistic pick (appearently) in above write up!

hes a hack that cant make a story flow or be interesting and his poor use of fund s on District 9 is exactly why you dont give him a big budget!

Movie doesnt have to be made tommorrow so most realistic is wait for Ridley Scott to be ready to do it!

Well it's nice to know you have an opinion but your character attack with no sound basis leads me to believe that you just dislike the man not based on merit but by your general disposition towards his work.  I did not say he had to direct or that he was the best director to direct!!  I explained that he would be a more likely pick due to scheduleing and avaliability and due the fact that Most Video-Game to movie adaptations with limited budget cannot afford an 'A' list director.  BTW the movie District 9 cost around $30 million to make and he did stretch the budget  to great effect.

My Top choices based on quality would be Christopher Nolan or Ridley Scott again with BUDGET constraints and the likelyhood that they would not attach themselves to the movies I would surmise that they would not infact direct!

Aliens, Terminator 2 and Avatar are some of the best Sci-fi/Adventure movies I've seen.

Anyone who was heavily involved with Farscape.

Of course, most of those people are unknowns in the states, so it would probably never fly, but that is among if not the best sci-fi ever produced.

Dang I wish J.J. Abrams could direct the movie. His plate is full with Star Trek 2 and the rumored Mission Impossible 4.

True the only good thing Michael Bay is doing in a movie is having top notch action.

Ridely Scott would be good for the job, though he does have his hands full with the Alien Prequel.

Christopher Nolan is great at directing movies but he's only done one sci-fi and that's Inception.  In addition we haven't seen Inception ourselves to tell whether it will be good or not.  He also is rumored to be working on Batman 3, but its just a rumor.

In my opinion I think Neil Blomkamp or J.J. Abrams would fit the bill for directing the mass effect movie. But I have my doubts that either of them will be directing it. It will probably be directed by someone who we've never heard of.
