Hello. I am a recent purchaser of Mass Effect who is at the end of his rope concerning his sound issues. I bought the PC version of this game through an auction website called TradeMe, from a reliable vendor (judging by his many positive reputation ratings, at least) who (correctly, I might add) stated the manual was in mint and the DVD in near-mint condition.

My system is as follows:
  • Intel Core i7 CPU 930 @ 2.80 GHZ (8 CPUs), ~2.8 GHZ
  • Nvidia GeForce GTX 470 (with integrated RAMDAC, 4059 MB of memory, running in my monitor's native resolution of 1280x1024, with my drivers at 8.17.11.9717)
  • Realtek High Definition Audio (Speakers, Digital Output and Digital Output (Optical), all of which have drivers 6.00.0001.5859
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit (6.1, Build 7600)
  • DirectX 11
My motherboard is a ASUS P6T. I am running Mass Effect as an administrator and UAC has been disabled.

My issue is thus:
While it is possible to start a game and have it sustain music, saving a game and loading it (the principle area I have tested this is right at the beginning, after the initial conversation with Joker and Kaiden, but no music loaded on an autosave at the start of Eden Prime either) results in no music (though a musical cue briefly plays when Nihlus is walking away at the end of the Shepard/Anderson/Nihlus briefing scene).

Version 1.0 crashes trying to initiate the config, and both versions 1.01 and 1.02+Bring Down The Sky DLC have this problem. Is this actually a normal part of gameplay, or is there something I'm missing? I have tried virtually every combination under the sun in BioEngine.init's ISACT section and in the game's sound/audio sections under Config, and my game's sound experiences no other issues that I am aware of. I am using brand new Logitech LS11 speakers in the rear analogue jack..

I am not sure if this is significant, but at times the beginning theme (which does not appear to be listed on the soundtrack and I cannot find elsewhere) sounds like it is skipping, though giving the repetitve nature of it's beat, this is very difficult to verify.

I apologise if I have missed anything or been unclear in any way. I have posted this here, as for some unknown reason  I receive an "Action Not Allowed" error when I try to post (or even reply) on the main site's technical support forums.

Is hardware sound turned on or off in the sound options? Since you have Realtek HD it should be off.

I've tried it with hardware sound enabled and disabled, be it via the in game menu and the Config menu.

I have tried 64-62 (which the program loads as default in BioEngine), 64-64, 30-30, 30-28 and even 28-28 for MaxChannels and TotalAvailableChannels. I have tried, with the MaxChannels set to both 64 and 32, "DeviceName=", "DeviceName=Generic Hardware" and "DeviceName=Realtek HD Audio output". My most recent log file is thus:

While the numbers before them sometimes change, the bolded lines never do, and I suspect they may have something to do with my problem. I can provide a copy of my BioEngine.init at install, after Config with hardware acceleration enabled, here: http://rapidshare.co...Engine.ini.html

Update: I was wrong on Eden Prime. Music is as it should be there, and it works upon reload. I'm beginning to wonder if there being nothing but ambience (i.e. spaceship hum instead of the haunting, subdued melody I hear initially, and no Eden Prime ambience when Captain Anderson brings up the package-escort mission with Shepard) upon reloads of the initial Normandy scene is a bug or a feature.

I'm having the same exact problem. I purchased the game last night, installed it, and played for a bit. There's music all the way up to the conversation between Shepard, Captain Anderson and the Spectre fellow -- including action music when Eden Prime is being attacked on screen -- but I ended up stopping and having to go back to my save prior to that scene.

When I did, no music at all. No ambient music on the ship, no music over the conversation, no action music in the scene with Eden Prime being attacked. I've tried tweaking the ini as well, with no luck. I'm also using Realtek Audio.

Does the music eventually come back properly, or is this a problem I can expect throughout the game?

Same problem. No music after loading a save. I've tried using the sound chip on motherboard and my regular soundcard (SB Audigy). Same problem with both. Since the music eventually starts playing when you reach a new area, I think it's software related rather than hardware. Tried using software and hardware mode.
