Same thing happned to me, I installed official update first and when I press play nothing happens.
Then tried to directly run daorigins.exe directly but it said:
This application failed to start because application configuration is incorrect.Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
using XP SP3, with more than enough fast hardware

I cannot count with figures smaller than thousands how often the statement " meets all requirements for the game " turns out not to be true, so let us make that judgement here, OK?
Preliminary diagnostic information
PCs are not *anything* at all like game console systems. There is almost nothing that is truly "standard" between various branded PCs, making the game developers' jobs very difficult, and resulting in warning labels attached to game boxes for those games that have serious requirements.
In case you have misunderstood how to evaluate your PC compared to that game box label, we have to start from here. Fill it all in.

People have found that a MicroSHAFT update fixes problems like this.

Can't stress enough how important it is to have a legitimate copy of Windows with a properly functioning Windows Update. In lieu of that, downloading the C++ 2005 runtimes directly is a worthy alternative.

Unfortunately I've got the same problem. Here's what happened up to now:
I tried switching discs one and two, but without any luck.
My specs are:
Processor Manufacturer: Intel
Processor Name / Type: Core 2 Duo E8500
Processor Speed: 3,16 Ghz
Operating System / Service Pack: Windows XP Professional with SP3
System RAM: 4 GB
Video (GPU) Manufacturer: ATI
Video Card Model: Radeon HD 4890
Video Card Driver Version: Catalyst 09.9 (6.14.10.6999)
Video Card onboard RAM: 1GB
Sound Card Manufacturer: Realtek; integrated in motherboard
Sound Card Model: SoundMAX HD
Both my Windows and my Dragon Age: Origins (Collectors Edition) are paid for and legal. I will try to reinstall the game and install all WinXPSP3 updates (automatic updates are disabled because they annoy me without end) and then report back. If anyone else has any ideas on this issue, please let me know.

Greetings from The Netherlands,

- The game installed without any trouble.
- When the launcher showed I choose "Configure".
- The scan set everything to lowest possible settings, so I set them to highest.
- After closing the configuration utility I was asked whether or not to save the changes I made: yes.
- An error message appeared: DAOriginsConfig: An invalid argument was encountered.
- I went online and downloaded and installed patch 1.01.
- I relaunched the launcher.
- I clicked "Play" but nothing happened... At all!
I tried switching discs one and two, but without any luck.

Did you install the C++ runtime library from the Microsoft site?

I did not, those comments were posted while I was typing mine. However, after reading your comment I did. The first try was a disappointing one, I was notified my disc could not be authenticated. After switching disc two with disc one things are looking up: the game launched! I interrupted the intro te let everyone know that given link will probably solve any issues like mine: spread the word! And to clarify: I did not update any other Windows components (yet), they're still downloading.Did you install the C++ runtime library from the Microsoft site?

Thanks for the help, and sorry for what turns out to be a newbie question.

I had the same problem. I just ran the game without the update then it worked fine. Seems to be a problem with the patch.

Fenna1: It's not so much that so much as the patched version of DAO requires a later version of Visual C++ which under normal circumstances should be installed for you already but for various reasons isn't.

Installed the C++ patch, still won't start
*edit*
the x86 version of the patch is needed even on 64 bit systems, working now.

any more detail? How are you trying to start the game. What is it doing? What version of windows are you running, hardware specs, driver versions?
