Bought the game today, installed it fine, clicked on 'Play' and after a moment of black-screenedness, a little thing comes up saying "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working", and a dubious statement about my computer trying to find out what's going on. I assume this is all due to insufficient specs on my part, but haven't been able to accurately diagnose the problem yet.

My possibly problematic specs are:

OS: Vista Home Premium (6.0, Build 6001) (I don't know if the fact that it isn't Vista SP1 is a serious problem, horrible feeling that it is though)

RAM: 1916MB (surely close enough, right?)

Graphics-wise, I'll just quote what seem to be the relevant bits in the Display tab of my DirectX Diagnostic thingummy:

Name: Mobile Intel ® 4 Series Express Chipset Family (which is the same as the Chip-type)

Current Display Mode: 1280 x 800 (32Bit) (60Hz)

All the DirectX stuff is fine. Hope this post doesn't yield guffaws of pity regarding my levels of ignorance. I'm guessing the problem is graphics related, and I sincerely hope there's a cheap solution.

Many thanks for getting through all that,

Ned

This game was never supposed to work with any of the terrible junk that Intel claims is a video chip, sorry.

Further, all such low quality laptops are merely disposables, since you cannot upgrade either the CPU or the GPU in them.

Video Card = 256 MB (with Pixel Shader 3.0 support). Supported GPU Chips: NVIDIA GeForce 6800 or greater; ATI Radeon X1600 Pro or greater. Please note that NVIDIA GeForce 7100, 7200, 7300, 7400, 7500, 8100, 8200, 8300, 8400, 9200, and 9300; ATI Radeon X1300, HD 2400, 3100, 3200, HD 3450, HD 3470, HD 4200, and HD 4350 are below minimum system requirements. Updates to your video and sound card drivers may be required. Intel  and S3 video devices are not officially supported in Mass Effect 2.

Sorry, but you're going to need a graphic card under nVidia or ATI for this game to work well (or even function in his case). I also tried a bit ago to put ME on my school laptop and it simply will not work with Intel chipsets because quite frankly, they are trash for anything other than basic graphic rendering.

I would suggest using:
http://www.newegg.com/
-or-
http://www.tigerdirect.com/
for purchasing a new one if you are and they also have good prices on power supplies which you might need when upgrading.
Both have fairly good prices and you only really need a mid-range card (my GTS250 was only about $120).

If you would like to look at other cards:
