I have ME1 from Steam. I played it 5 hours months ago when I bought it, it worked fine.

I just went to play it again, and I am getting this error:

failed to compile global shader FLDRTranslucencyCombineVertexShader

in a little alert box that pops up after the game starts to load.

Anyone have any idea how I can fix this and play?

Edit, I suppose I'll add this in case it is relevent:

There has been a breakdown in the communication between the video card itself, its video driver, the Direct3D APIs, and the game.  The easiest attempted fix is to get the newest video driver from nVIDIA directly.  That's not the most likely problem area, however.  Dx9 is the most likely broken software.  You must have Dx9 as well as any newer version of Direct3D for Vista or Windows 7.

If replacing those with the latest versions doesn't do it, reinstall the game itself.

P. S.  I just did a search for this subject in the forum, and someone with a high end GTX200 had the problem; you might look for that thread, yourself.  (Someone else asked the same question without even scrolling down a few lines to see your question!)
