tried searching for this but didn't find anything so far.

i upgraded my system to 7 and my old harddrive is not found by the new setup. so i redownloaded the game from direct2drive but if i enter the code i get the message that there is problems with ownership. so i guess i need to tell bioware somehow that the old installation is gone but i haven't found a place where to do that so the key is free again.

maybe a silly question but i don't know who to ask.

Each key comes with five activations or installs. You can get an activation back by PROPERLY uninstalling the game. Something which you obviously didn't do since the game is still on another HDD. I can only assume you used all of your installs, maybe? Not really sure.

From the 1.02 patch notes:

"-Added the SecuROM activation "revoke" ability which is automatically run during uninstallation.

*When Mass Effect is run on a new computer for the first time an "activation" will be used.

*Mass Effect allows activations on up to 5 different computers.

*users will now regain a used activation upon uninstallation of Mass Effect or after manually using the SecuROM activation "revoke" ability.

To manually use the SecuROM activation "revoke" ability, follow the steps below.

1) Install the 1.02 update to your current version of Mass Effect

2) Navigate to the ‘Binaries’ subfolder of your copy of Mass Effect

3) Run the command: MassEffect.exe -ead_gl_remove

There is a known issue where some users will encounter an incorrect error during uninstallation stating "There is a problem with verifying ownership of your game".

In the majority of cases this error can be ignored as uninstallation will have completed successfully."
