That said, Masters of the Universe wasn't bad. It had a great villain, who in fact was acted so well that it felt out of place with the overall cheesiness of the movie. *pulls out sword* "I HAVE THE POWER!!!!!"

I loved Conan the Destroyer. Brainless fun, and the part where he fights the wizard/lizardman dude is laugh-out loud material. Loved the character concepts as well.
See, that was one of my problems with Conan the Destroyer.I have expectations for Conan tales. I thought "Barbarian" did a passable job of capturing the feel of REH's stories. Destroyer went a bit too far until it felt like a caricature. I kept thinking "this isn't Conan..." while watching it. Putting all that aside it's at best a bad action-adventure movie. Perhaps not Masters of the Universe bad... ~Shudders~ ...but bad nonetheless.
I think the biggest problem with Conan was that it was apparent they were trying to make it appeal to a wider audience. They gave it a PG or PG-13 rating, I don't remember which, and a lot of the stuff in the movie was obviously put there to make it more appealing, if not necessarily for kids, then at least to people that would normally not watch that type of film. It had an almost 60's Batmanesque campiness to it, and some of the casting choices (I.E. Grace Jones, who was extremely popular at the time), were made to draw more people in. It didn't have that dark and grim atmosphere of the first film, and it didn't look like the filmmakers took it so seriously.
Actually, though, as bad as Conan the Destroyer was, it was nowhere NEAR as bad as Red Sonja by the same director, which was supposed to be a spinoff of Conan.

The original Beastmaster from like 1980 or something like that with Marc Singer and Tanya Roberts really wasn't that bad. I mean come on, Rip Torn was the villian! You don't get much cooler than Rip Torn. I actually like the original Beastmaster movie, but then again I haven't seen it in probably close to 25 years, so I am sure it's appeal has worn off.

More recently, Dungeons & Dragons was pretty horribad. Probably Jeremy Irons' most embarassing role ever.

Edit: Ah wait, that was based on the comic book, chainmail bikini wearing character? I keep getting Red Sonja and Red Sonya confused.

Of course in this case being better than the first isn't saying a whole lot. >.> I thought it was pretty good for a low budget movie, if not necessarily brilliant.

The problem with Red Sonja was that the source material was crap at the time. If the movie had been about the actual Sonja from R.E. Howard instead of the Marvel invention, it could've been better. But then the 80s had a lot of horribad fantasy movies.

Yeah, that's true, 80's fantasy films were pretty suckariffic. But on the other hand, if you skip all the background stuff, and forget where some of these movies came from (I.E. the R.E. Howard Books), these movies did what they were intended to do. They entertain. Not necessarily in the ways the producers want, but they are entertaining none the less. There are some exceptions. Ladyhawke was good, and Excalibur to this day is still hailed as a masterpiece, so there were some gems buried in the pile of bad movies.
I grew up in the 80's, and I look at the movies now that enjoyed back then when I was a kid, and I think "Wow, I actually LIKED this?" Now, there are some bad ones that to this day I still love. Sword and the Sorcerer, Ice Pirates, and Flash Gordon jump to the top of my head. All 3 of these are bad movies in their own rights, but they had an appeal that stood the test of time for me, and I still enjoy watching them.

I totally forgot about that one, that's how bad it was, but that is near the top of my list. The movie was so slow paced, and the characters were so forgettable, that even the 'emotional' scenes ended up being laughable. Even an all-star cast could not save that disaster of a film.

Gymkata
"The Grace of Gymnastics, the Kill of Karate!"
Gold Medal gymnastics champion Kurt Thomas becomes Jonathon Cabot, a gymnastics champion recruited by the CIA to infiltrate the fictional mid east nation of "Parmistan" to play "the game". Whoever wins the game gets a favor granted by the king, in this case Cabot is supposed to ask Parmistan to allow the US to put a Star Wars defence system there. In the meantime, Cabot flops and flips about fighting ninjas, a town full of crazy people (think Resident Evil 4), and a bunch of other baddies. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089243/

Yeah, but Gymkata is one of those movies that is SO bad that people permanently shut it out of their minds. I think it was used in social experiments and on government mind control projects. It is truly a bad movie.

I like how the country's name is Parmistan. I wonder if the director was eating cheese when he came up with that...
And then there's this: "In the years since its release, Gymkata has become an underground hit in the world of homosexual camp cinema. The film plays annually in a double-feature with Top Gun, at the Wish You Were Queer Film Festival in West Hollywood, California. The film has become so popular in homosexual subsets that the act of Bukkake among gay men has come to be known as "Gymkata"."
I freaking love Wikipedia.

On the Conan subject I loved Conan the Barbarian I watched it again recently but Conan the Destroyer is almost like a completely unrelated movie. Red Sonia was hilarious.
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly has just ended and while flipping through channels I've discovered Batman and Robin is on. I don't even know where to begin with it, its all so awkward and terrible. Uma Thurman is stealing the show for sheer bad acting I think. It has Alicia Silverstone in the Batgirl outfit and it still manages to blow chunks. Quite the feat.
