Yes, it is possible to save the Thorian. After you shoot it full of holes, you are given the option to shoot Shiala. If you spare her life, the Thorian lives on as Spores in her nervous system.
I thought in ME2, Shiala tells you it's dead.

What possible motivation is there to save something that can painfully enslave you with a sneeze?
because im lazy and technically its a new species. I mean, genocide is bad right? even video game genocide?

Ever noticed that the Thorian's nerve sacs healthbars has a couple of arrows in the range? I always suspected that there was a way to save it at some point in development but they dropped it. They kept the indicators in the health bar though. Anyone actually ever tried doing just enough damage to stay between the arrows in all the sacs to see what happens?

The arrows indicate when you've "hit a nerve" and more thorian creepers will be woken up.

I thought that was a bug, the arrows carrying over from shuttle bay door puzzle.

Hmm... maybe. But it always seemed to me when you shoot the nodes and get them to a certain point in the health bar, more creepers would wake up.

I just did that mission yesterday, and I remember seeing the arrows on some of the nodes (don't remember noticing them before) but not on all of them.

I started a new trilogy run yesterday, I'll keep an eye out when I get to Feros again. If they only appear on some of the nodes, then maybe it is just a glitch after all. Seems strange that it'd be related to the door "puzzle" though, or even possible to be from that.
