I've realized through a few playthroughs that after you gain Sten's loyalty he calls you by a certain title. I never have the subtitles on so I don't know exactly what the title is. I imagine it comes from the Qunari culture but if anyone knows this please share.

Kadan: Term for something one values highly. Or sometimes the center of the chest. (Literally, "where the heart lies.")

There's a dialogue guide on gamefaqs that will help you max out Sten's approval without gifts. He and Morrigan are the easiest to max out if you pick the right responses. If you don't just agree with them, then you'll probably clash with them somewhat in dialogue.
Sten is actually a pretty cool squad mate to have around once you know what to say to him.

What I like about Sten is that he starts thinking that you are lame, but by the end he truly respects you as a leader, friend, and Grey warden.

By the end, you can learn some interesting things about the Qunari and why Sten and the Qunari don't think highly of mages. Once you are able to break through Sten's shell, he's quite an interesting squad mate to have around.

He's one team member you truly should devote a playthrough to having in your party. That's not to say you can't max his approval without having him in your group all the time--you can. But you truly learn a lot about Qunari culture when he's with you, observing and commenting on things he sees. He's a much livelier teammate if he's allowed to roam around with you, as well!

He is amazingly observant, funny, tall and cool. Sounds like a personal ad. To bad the end of the night is lethal, note bring a heated rod.

His fondness of cookies is especially unexpected, and how he offers cookies to the templar guarding the boat to the Circle.

I noticed something. I was watching Berserk and Guts sounds A LOT like Sten. Was it the same voice actor?

I noticed the amazing voice when watching 'V'... havent played DA for a while back then and yet suprisingly I felt rather wanting for cookies.
