I've been thinking about attempting to download the DLC for the Mass Effect I bought from Steam. In light of the GPFs I was getting before the system restore, I was wondering if I would have the same issues if I bought a hard copy that was operated apart from Steam.

My question is: Is buying the hard copy rather than the Steam download better? Will that lower the chance of faulty returns, or does it really matter if it's from Steam or not?

I have no idea what was up with your GPF problem, so I have no idea. Steam comes pre-patched with 1.02, so BDTS should not be making any difference to even your patch version.

I cannot guarantee there is no difference, but I doubt there is. I would look at your system, not the DRM implementation, as this is not a common problem.

Could you explain the DRM implementation?

New problem...

The installer for Bring Down the Sky cancels the moment I enter in the code.

I'm putting these issues on ice for now. I still haven't even fully played Mass Effect to make Shepard level 60 so I really need not be stressing about this now. I may try a reinstall.

Question, though. If I uninstall and then re-install, will my save files be in tact? That's really all I'm worried about.

You probably want Zesban's thread: http://social.biowar...1/index/1942301

You can try skipping his steps 3-10 and simply trying the process-kill technique; that alone gets it working for some people. But if that doesn't do it, the registry edit outlined in 3-10 seems to be the way to go.

I believe it should leave your stuff intact, especially if you're simply doing it through Steam and telling it to delete your game content. To be sure, back up My Documents\\Bioware\\Mass Effect\\Save\\ to another location.

As far as I know the Steam version of ME1 is definitely superior to the hard copy. The hard copy comes with the infamous DRM known as SecuROM. SecuROM has gained a dirty reputation from a lot of gamers that have had it. Sony has even been sued on multiple occasions because of it. If you want more info on it just wiki it.

I also just got ME1 from Steam and so was wondering if I needed the patches from http://masseffect.bi...ates/index.html

or does Steam come pre-patched with them. Thanks

The Steam version of Mass Effect is pre-patched up to 1.02.

The Bring Down the Sky DLC has its own SecuROM DRM implementation, separate from the main game. 3-5 activations(not sure if EA upped it when they upped their games from 3 to 5, sorry) with no revoke tool. Without said tool, you would have to contact EA Support if you run out of activations.

Unless of course you happen to have a version of the DLC published by CD Projekt (distributer of the game in Central and Eastern Europe), not EA, then there is no SecuROM, but it requires some finagling to get that DLC to work with a Steam build.

Thanks for answering my question about the version. I would also like to know, and I haven't even played ME1 yet after having installed it this morning, if it already comes with the BDTS DLC. It says on the purchase page here if you scroll down to the 'About the game' section that it "Includes free additional content — face off against the horrific
Batarians" aka BDTS right?

They may have updated it to actually include the DLC files. EA did advertise the DLC as being free with every PC copy of ME1, but you still had to come here and download it. I'm afraid there's no way to know other than for you to play through it up until you get the Normandy and just see if the option of going to Terra Nova is there.

As far as I know BDTS still isn't included with a Steam download.

I hadn't heard about CD Projekt eschewing the SecuROM activation system, good for them. I don't suppose their version works with our English copies?

The CD Projekt version does include the English language/text. I got their BDTS to work with my English Steam-bought ME1 through some...creativity. Nothing illegal involved, as long as you manage to find a CD Projekt BDTS release file yourself.
