I thought I'd like him before release of the game.
But now he tells he killed a family plus children which makes him very unsypathetic to me though
he kind of seems to regret it.

Is there some twist later in his story, where he actually didn't kill them despite stating it in the beginning?
Because this way, I simply can't like him, even ingame .

He has a funny interaction with dog, plays with kittens, etc.

There are reasons behind Sten's behavior. If you have high enough influence with him, he will try to explain, whether you still like him after that, is up to you. And before you ask again, as far as I remember he did kill them and was very much aware of his actions.

Maybe, it was a blood mage or a desire demon.

Maybe he's too embarrassed to tell you what really happened and would rather you think of him as a murderer than someone who was caught wearing the mother's unmentionables when nobody was looking and the family was attacked and he couldn't defend them fast enough because he had to change first and forgot where his sword was.

Keep making excuses for him and you'll begin to like him again.
