They do... eventually.
That part of the Redcliff quest took me a while to figure out a decent strategy for. What worked for me was having 3 of my party members hang out on top of the hill with the knights and sending a single member down to pull small groups of undead up the hill. The knights seem a bit tougher than the archers in the town square. Also make sure you go through the city streets and take out the few remaining undead that don't attack the square.
I used a melee heavy party, so you might have different results with a different make-up. I just found myself easily overwhelmed when I hung out in the town square and it seemed as if the undead never stopped coming. Once I tried pulling them up the hill in small groups it nullified the difficulty, plus my party would be out of combat and heal up in between pulls.

There are way too many of those dudes, its just irritating, no fun. I hope there is not another battle like that- very dissapointing. I just adored the game until that battle.

i had little problem with this part of red cliffe. first you have to make sure you get the smitty up and running to help the town folk near the chantry have good weapons and armor. second you have to find the oil barrels in the empty store. then you talk to the night at the top near the windmill and let him know what you found. then tell him you are read for night fall. at night you light the oil with a mage and stand behind the wall of fire. as enemies come down the run threw the fire and take damage.
at the lower part when the monster come from the lake let the townfolk deal their damage while your crew kind of flanks them. i think it is very important to have wynne before you go to red cliffe so she can heal your party while you are dealing with wave after wave of enemies.

Ah bless you for the info. now I consider my self a diehard BG player, how did I miss the oil barrels? Perhaps I am not paying enough attention to the dialogue or not doing enough exploring. Now I am ashamed of my self like Sten. Must do super exploring attonement now.

you can also get the innkeeper, a dwarf, and an elf to help with the fight below in the middle of the village as well as the knights to help up top.
The bard ability Captivating Song was insanely helpful in this fight.
