Not much to say to this subject, because too much or less roleplaying in games is TOTALLY players personal taste. If someone likes general ways of roleplaying games, they usually want more roleplaying stuff. There is no correct answer to this.
If you compare ME1 and ME2, then ME1 had little more roleplaying related stuff. How ever, the difference isn't really big. Mostly because the main and most important part of both Mass Effect is the cinematic characters storytelling with dialogs and combat.
Base consept: A role-playing game (RPG) is a broad family of games in which players assume the roles of characters, or take control of one or more avatars, in a fictional setting. Role playing games are fundamentally different from most other types of games in that they stress social interaction and collaboration in storytelling.

Alas my fellow old school gamer, this forum is not old school though.slimgrin wrote...
Why can't this debate ever be discussed in a civilized manner? I would like to see ME1 or ME2 discussed for once without habitually comparing them to each other. They are very different games with different goals. And yes, both of them have pretty big flaws, but the remedy to ME2's flaws does not necessarily reside in ME1, and vice versa.
I agree. Mass Effect 3 is tons better than Mass Effect 1 and 2. Neither was anywhere near as good as Mass Effect 0, even though that game sucked.Shotokanguy wrote...

That's because no one is really comparing them to any other RPG, including the best selling RPG of all time:slimgrin wrote...

It appears I'm taking this topic a bit too seriously.
What, are you kidding me? Urz was the best developed character in ME2 and ME3! Just look at the dialogue!SuperMedbh wrote...
Mass Effect 3 was a complete betrayal of everything Bioware stood for. Just for starters, Urz in ME2 was a rugged but tormented individualist who nonetheless slobbered all over Shepard. But the slobber didn't happen until AFTER the complexity of Ratch's Quest. In ME3, Urz is immediately buddy buddy with Shepard regardless of whether or not Shepard befriended him in ME2. Hello? Continuity? What the problem Bioware? Too lazy to figure out the consequences of a mere 107 plot permutations in ME2?
Mass Effect 3 has less shooting than Mass Effect 1 and 2, and you're complaining? Just because Urz is like a dog doesn't mean they're dumbing down the game for the pet loving shooter crowd. Then ME3 forces that stupid plotline in which you visit the Varren homeworld and entered Urz in agility trials. Sure, it appealed to those console kiddies who get excited over state of the art physics engines for the jumps and customizable Varren snacks. Don't even get me started on the "teeter totter angst" B.S. Urz is a VARREN, FFS. He'd just eat the teeter totter, not waste time worrying about whether he hit the contact point or not. Where is the indepth combat system that ME2 had in the pit fights?
I agree, planet-scanning was the best thing that ever happened to BioWare! I loved exploring the flat, empty planets with my scanning reticule!Oh, and planet scanning. I LOVED planet scanning, almost as much as I loved getting stuck on mountains in the Mako. First, Bioware removed the Mako in ME2, simply because everyone complained about it. THEN they get rid of planet scanning??
Finally, I bought ALL of the Mass Effect series, sometimes even at full price. Heck, I even got the Equalizer Pack! And still Seth Green hasn't called me. What's up with that?
What a fitting thing to say coming from a BioWare FANGIRL that she loves planet scanning.Ecael wrote...

The Mako was tons better because the planets had MOUNTAINS! And when you hopped over and explored that mountain, you found out that right behind it was another MOUNTAIN!
You suck.
Then we can at least come to a compromise and agree that planet-scanning and the Mako sucks.Ecael wrote...

Planet-scanning is teh awesome. It tastes just like triple chocolate cheesecake. At least, that's my view of it.
Never! Then I would be indirectly saying that chocolate cheesecake is made of fail!ShepardWrex wrote...
